Cynopoecilus intimus is a tiny annual killifish known from a single locality in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil — a temporary pool draining toward the rio Vacacaí near the city of Santa Maria. It ranks among the smallest members of its genus, with males reaching barely 1 in standard length, and it shares the characteristic annual life history of the Cynopoecilus lineage: the adults live only as long as their seasonal pool holds water, burying diapausing eggs in the soft substrate before the drought claims them. Those buried embryos carry the population through the dry season in a state of arrested development, hatching when the pool floods again. Assessed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List under criterion D2, its entire known range sits within an agricultural landscape where rice cultivation and sand extraction press directly on its only confirmed habitat.

Taxonomy & naming

Cynopoecilus intimus was described by Wilson J. E. M. Costa in 2002, based on material collected from a temporary pool near a tributary of the rio Vacacaí, approximately 4 mi north of Vila Block on highway BR-392 in the Santa Maria area of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The description was published in Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters (vol. 13, no. 1, pp. 11–24). Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats Cynopoecilus intimus Costa, 2002 as the valid combination; the authority is not parenthesised because Costa placed it in Cynopoecilus from the outset.

The genus Cynopoecilus belongs to the family Rivulidae — the South American annual killifishes — and is closely allied to other small, sexually dichromatic annual genera of the Pampa and Chaco regions of southern South America. The specific epithet intimus is Latin for 'intimate' or 'innermost', a name that may reference the species' close morphological or ecological similarity to congeners, though Costa's original paper is the primary reference for the author's stated rationale.

The American Killifish Association places C. intimus in Class 3: South American Annuals, the competitive class covering peat-spawning annual killies from the continent's seasonal wetlands. Within that framework it is a rarely encountered species — known in the hobby almost exclusively through the interest of specialists studying the Cynopoecilus genus.

Morphology

Cynopoecilus intimus is a slender, elongate annual killifish of diminutive proportions. FishBase records a maximum standard length of 1 in for males and 1 in SL for females; iTrainsFishes gives an absolute maximum of 1.5 in, likely reflecting total length in the largest individuals. Either way, this places C. intimus firmly among the smallest rivulids. Published meristic data from Costa (2002) and iTrainsFishes give dorsal fin counts of approximately 17–18 soft rays and anal fin counts of 23–25 soft rays, with 28–29 vertebrae and a scale count of approximately 25–26 along the lateral series. The pre-dorsal length is approximately 57% of standard length and the body depth approximately 28% SL, indicating a moderately slender body profile typical of the genus.

Sexual dichromatism is pronounced, as in all Cynopoecilus. Males display the vivid blue, red, and brown patterning characteristic of the genus — often with iridescent lateral scales and coloured fin margins — while females are cryptic and brownish, providing camouflage in leaf litter and sediment. The pelvic fins are notably small. The combination of a posteriorly placed dorsal fin (the dorsal/anal offset, D/A, is approximately −2.5, meaning the anal origin is well anterior to the dorsal origin) and the large, unpaired fin area is characteristic of rivulids adapted for bottom-skimming in shallow, vegetated seasonal pools.

Habitat

The only confirmed locality for Cynopoecilus intimus is a temporary pool associated with a small tributary of the rio Vacacaí, in the floodplain agricultural zone near Santa Maria in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The rio Vacacaí drains a lowland catchment in the central-southern portion of Rio Grande do Sul, flowing westward through cattle-rearing and rice-growing country before joining the rio Jacuí system. The temporary pools of this region are shallow, seasonal depressions — filling with rainfall during the wet season and drying out completely in the dry season — set among grassland and the floodplain rice fields that characterise the Pampa biome.

Such pools typically accumulate a layer of organic detritus, leaf litter, and soft peat-like sediment on the bottom — the substrate into which Cynopoecilus intimus and its congeners spawn. Water chemistry in Pampa seasonal pools is generally soft and slightly acidic to neutral, though specific measurements for this locality are not recorded in the available literature. The IUCN assessment habitat classification is seasonal/intermittent freshwater wetland. FishBase codes the species as freshwater, pelagic, and tropical, and flags the habitat as temporary, reflecting the annual life history.

Feeding

FishBase assigns Cynopoecilus intimus a trophic level of 3.1 (± 0.4), placing it as a low-level carnivore. No detailed dietary study of this species exists in the available literature, but this trophic score is consistent with the feeding ecology of annual rivulids generally: small aquatic invertebrates, microcrustaceans, insect larvae, and zooplankton form the bulk of the diet in the wild. The seasonal pools they inhabit are typically rich in small invertebrates during the wet season as organic matter decomposes and microfaunal communities bloom, providing an abundant food source that allows the fish to complete their entire life cycle in a matter of months.

In the aquarium, Cynopoecilus intimus is best maintained on a varied diet of small live or frozen foods — nauplii of Artemia, daphnia, micro-worms, grindal worms, and similar invertebrate prey — sized to the fish's tiny mouth. The species will accept high-quality micro-pellets or freeze-dried foods with acclimatisation, but live and frozen invertebrate prey best support condition and spawning behaviour.

Mating

Cynopoecilus intimus is an annual killifish with the substrate-spawning, diapausing-egg reproductive mode that defines the group. Males are vigorously territorial and display intensely to females, spreading their fins and presenting their lateral iridescence in typical rivulid fashion. Courtship is brief and direct: the male manoeuvres alongside the female and, when she is receptive, the pair press together and dive in synchrony into the soft substrate — peat, mud, or detritus — where eggs and sperm are released in the sediment. The eggs are buried at a shallow depth and the spawning drive lasts only a fraction of a second before the fish return to the water column.

This paired dive-spawning behaviour is the defining character of annual substrate-spawners and distinguishes them sharply from plant-spawning (non-annual) killies that deposit eggs among vegetation or on solid surfaces. Multiple spawning acts occur daily during the wet season; the male will pursue receptive females repeatedly throughout the breeding period. Because wild fish must complete their entire reproductive cycle before the pool dries — often within three to five months — the spawning drive is intense and nearly continuous while conditions allow.

Breeding

After each spawning dive the fertilised eggs remain buried in the substrate. Unlike the eggs of non-annual killies, which develop on a standard embryological schedule, annual rivulid eggs can enter diapause — a state of suspended development — at one or more defined embryonic stages. This arrested development allows the eggs to survive the complete desiccation of the pool during the dry season, persisting in the damp mud for weeks or months until the next rainy season refills the habitat. At that point, re-wetting triggers hatching, and a new cohort of juveniles appears. The entire adult population typically dies before the pool dries; the eggs are the sole vessel of the species between wet seasons.

In the aquarium, this biology is replicated with a peat or coir-fibre spawning medium. A layer of moist peat is placed on the tank floor; the fish spawn into it over several weeks. The medium is then removed, gently pressed to remove excess moisture (not dried completely), sealed in a plastic bag, labelled with the collection date and species, and stored at room temperature for a diapause period — typically three to six months for Cynopoecilus, though optimum periods vary by species and population. At the end of the diapause period, the peat is poured into shallow water and fry hatch within 24–48 hours. Newly hatched fry of this tiny species require the smallest live foods — infusoria and freshly hatched nauplii — from the first day.

In the aquarium

Cynopoecilus intimus is a specialist's fish: tiny, annual, and known from a single locality, it is rarely available and is maintained almost exclusively by killifish society members with a specific interest in the Cynopoecilus genus or in South American annual killies broadly. The American Killifish Association tracks the species in its studbook system under the single confirmed wild population from the Santa Maria area (BR-392, 4 mi N Vila Block).

A small, densely planted aquarium of 5.5–10 US gal suits a group of one male and two or three females. Water should be soft and slightly acidic, with temperature in the range of 68–75 °F. Gentle filtration — a small sponge filter — avoids disturbing the spawning medium on the tank floor. Because these are genuinely tiny fish, tankmates are impractical and the species is best kept in a species-only setup. Peat or coir substrate should always be present to capture eggs; without it the pair will still attempt to spawn but eggs will be lost or eaten. Lifespan is short even under ideal conditions — typically under one year — so maintaining a population requires diligent peat management and regular hatching cycles to produce successive generations.

The species has not entered the broad ornamental trade and is found only through killifish club exchanges, AKA auctions, and specialist breeders. Keeping it alive in captivity is itself a form of conservation insurance given the very restricted wild range and ongoing habitat pressures.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Cynopoecilus intimus as Vulnerable (VU) under criterion D2 in November 2018, with the assessment published in 2022 by the Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio). Criterion D2 applies when a taxon has a very restricted area of occupancy or number of locations such that it is prone to the effects of human activities or stochastic events within a very short time period — in this case, a single confirmed location. Population trend is listed as unknown.

The threats identified by the IUCN assessment are concrete and local: rice cultivation (arroz) in the floodplain agricultural landscape surrounding Santa Maria, and sand extraction (mineração de areia) within the species' restricted distribution area. Both activities directly alter or destroy seasonal wetlands — the temporary pools that C. intimus requires. The species has no known occurrence within any protected area. The Pampa biome of Rio Grande do Sul is one of the most threatened ecosystems in Brazil, with extensive conversion to soy, rice, and cattle production; seasonal wetland habitats within it have been drained, channelised, or simply ploughed over at a scale that renders small endemic species highly vulnerable to localised extinction.

The species is also included in the Livro Vermelho da Fauna Brasileira Ameaçada de Extinção (Red Book of Brazilian Threatened Fauna). The FishBase resilience score — minimum population doubling time under 15 months — reflects the annual life history (fast generation turnover), but that resilience is only meaningful if the habitat persists. With only a single locality known and active agricultural pressure on that site, the long-term outlook for C. intimus in the wild remains precarious absent targeted habitat protection.
