The starhead topminnow is a small, surface-oriented killifish native to the interior wetlands and floodplain sloughs of the central and south-central United States — from the Lake Michigan and Mississippi River basins south through the Gulf Slope drainages of Alabama and Mississippi. Rarely exceeding 3 in, it is built for the vegetation-choked margins of oxbow lakes, floodplain pools, and slow backwaters, where it preys on insects and invertebrates at the water's surface. Though broadly assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN, regional populations — particularly those in Wisconsin — have declined sharply with the loss of macrophyte-rich wetland habitat, and the species illustrates how a globally stable fish can be locally endangered within a single generation.

Taxonomy & naming

Fundulus dispar was described by the Swiss-American naturalist Louis Agassiz in 1854. Because the name has subsequently been moved from its original generic placement, the authority is given in parentheses. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) recognises the valid combination as Fundulus dispar (Agassiz, 1854), placing it within the large North American killifish genus Fundulus, family Fundulidae.

The specific epithet dispar is Latin for 'unequal' or 'different', likely alluding to the sexual dimorphism between the patterned male and the plainer female. The genus name Fundulus derives from the Latin fundus, meaning 'bottom', though members of the genus are predominantly surface-oriented or mid-water fish rather than bottom-dwellers — the name reflects an older usage. The common names 'starhead topminnow' and 'northern starhead topminnow' both refer to the iridescent, star-like spot on the top of the head visible in males of many Fundulus species in this subgroup.

The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service maintains a record for this species under Taxonomic Serial Number (TSN) 165672 in the Integrated Taxonomic Information System (ITIS), confirming its standing as a valid, distinct species separate from the closely related southern starhead topminnow (Fundulus nottii) and related Gulf Slope taxa.

Morphology

Fundulus dispar is a small, slender killifish. FishBase records a maximum total length of 3 in, though most individuals are considerably smaller — 1.5 in is cited as a typical adult length. The body form is fusiform and laterally compressed, with a flattened dorsal profile and an upturned, superior mouth suited for surface feeding. Like other topminnows, it rides near the surface and can exploit the thin layer of oxygenated water immediately below the air–water interface.

Sexual dimorphism is pronounced. Adult males are typically more brightly marked, with iridescent scales producing a bluish or greenish sheen on the flanks and the distinctive star-shaped or pearlescent spot on the head that gives the species its common name. Females are less conspicuously patterned, often showing a more uniform brownish or olivaceous ground colour with little structural iridescence. This difference in colouration facilitates field sexing and is the basis for the specific epithet dispar.

Habitat

The starhead topminnow occupies vegetated standing and slow-moving fresh waters across the south-central United States. The IUCN assessment places its range in the Mississippi River and Lake Michigan basins, and on the Gulf Slope drainages from Mobile Bay, Alabama, to the Pearl River, Mississippi. FishBase further describes the species as occurring in vegetated standing water bodies and quiet pools and backwaters of streams — consistently in low-energy, structurally complex microhabitats.

Data from Wisconsin surveys (2007–2012, n = 102 sites) provide the most detailed habitat picture available for any portion of the range. Nearly all occupied sites had medium to high densities of rooted aquatic macrophytes — the plants provide spawning substrate, cover from predators, and the invertebrate prey base the fish depends on. Microhabitat use is shallow: the fish occupies the first 3–7 ft from the shoreline, in water only centimetres to perhaps a metre deep, always in close association with emergent or submerged vegetation. Groundwater input was nearly universal at occupied Wisconsin sites — spring seeps and spring-fed tributaries appear to buffer water temperature and stabilise water levels during summer droughts and winter cold.

Water chemistry conditions at Wisconsin sites spanned a wide range of dissolved oxygen (3.0–19.4 mg/L, mean 8.56) and specific conductance (32–1,294 µS/cm, mean 417), suggesting that the fish tolerates considerable variability in these parameters, though sites with dense macrophytes implicitly constrain the lower end of oxygen availability. FishBase gives a thermal range of 59–77 °F, consistent with the temperate, seasonally variable nature of its habitat.

Feeding

Fundulus dispar is an opportunistic predatory omnivore that feeds primarily at and near the water surface. FishBase records the diet as including terrestrial insects, snails, and small crustaceans — a suite typical of North American topminnows, which exploit the neuston layer (the thin film of invertebrates trapped at or just below the water surface) as well as invertebrates drifting in from the surrounding vegetation.

The upturned, superior mouth is a morphological adaptation to surface feeding, allowing the fish to take prey from the underside of the surface film without having to tip sharply upward. In the structurally complex, plant-rich microhabitats the species favours, prey availability is tied directly to macrophyte density — the aquatic and emergent vegetation supports the invertebrate communities (chironomids, small beetles, amphipods, ostracods, and molluscs) that constitute the bulk of the diet. Loss of macrophyte cover therefore affects the species both as habitat loss and as trophic disruption.

Mating

Fundulus dispar is a non-annual, plant-spawning killifish. It does not bury eggs in substrate or produce diapausing eggs requiring a dry season; instead, breeding pairs deposit adhesive eggs on fine-leaved aquatic vegetation, plant roots, and similar substrates in shallow water near the surface or along the margins of macrophyte beds. This spawning strategy is shared by most members of the genus Fundulus and reflects the species' permanent-water lifestyle — it inhabits lakes, sloughs, and backwaters that persist year-round and does not depend on seasonal drying as a trigger for reproduction.

Females mature at approximately one year of age according to NANFA conservation research. Spawning is iteroparous — females deposit eggs incrementally over an extended season rather than in a single mass-release event — which is consistent with the plant-spawning guild broadly. Males in breeding condition are more brightly coloured; the iridescent head markings are assumed to function in mate choice, as in related Fundulus species, though detailed behavioural studies on F. dispar specifically are limited in the published literature.

Breeding

Fundulus dispar deposits its eggs on aquatic vegetation in shallow, well-vegetated water. The eggs are adhesive and incubate in water; there is no diapause phase and no requirement for peat or substrate burial. Development time is temperature-dependent and consistent with the temperate summer breeding season of the species' range. The fish is comparatively short-lived — NANFA conservation research notes that individuals rarely exceed three growing seasons — but compensates with rapid reproduction and a demonstrated ability to colonise newly suitable habitat quickly when conditions allow.

In the aquarium, conditioning the fish with live and frozen foods and then providing a heavily planted spawning tank or spawning mops replicates the natural setting. Eggs should be removed or the adults separated to prevent predation. The fry are small at hatching and require appropriately fine first foods. Because the species is uncommon in the ornamental trade and not widely bred in captivity, detailed aquarium breeding accounts are limited; dedicated North American Native Fish Association (NANFA) hobbyists are the primary source of practical breeding information.

In the aquarium

The starhead topminnow is infrequently encountered in the ornamental fish trade and is more likely to be kept by North American native fish hobbyists than by mainstream aquarists. FishBase notes it is 'difficult in the aquarium', which likely reflects both its modest colouration outside of breeding condition and its requirement for dense macrophyte cover and water quality conditions that mimic its vegetated wetland habitat.

For those interested in North American native fishes, it is a rewarding species: the breeding males' iridescent head patterning is subtle but beautiful, and the surface-skimming behaviour and plant associations make for a naturalistic display. A species aquarium or a community with other small, similarly sized North American natives (other small Fundulus, Elassoma pygmy sunfish, Heterandria formosa) is more appropriate than a mixed community tank. The species requires dense aquatic vegetation, calm water with minimal surface agitation, and temperatures within the 59–77 °F temperate range — it does not thrive in heated tropical aquaria. Water chemistry within the recorded conductance range (moderately soft to moderately hard) and neutral to mildly acidic pH are suitable.

Given the regional conservation concern for this species in states like Wisconsin, wild collection is inadvisable where populations are protected. Captive-sourced individuals from NANFA member breeders are the preferred route for interested hobbyists.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Fundulus dispar as Least Concern in 2012 (published 2013), citing a large extent of occurrence, a large number of subpopulations, and a population size presumably exceeding 10,000 mature individuals. Population trend, however, is noted as decreasing, and the assessment itself carries a notation that it 'Needs updating' — reflecting the fact that more than a decade has passed since the last evaluation and that local declines have continued.

At the regional scale the picture is considerably less reassuring. In Wisconsin, the species has contracted dramatically from its historical range across the major floodplain corridors of the southern third of the state (Mississippi, Black, Wisconsin, Rock, and Fox River drainages) to just five remaining areas, most of them in Lower Wisconsin River sloughs. The state lists it as endangered or threatened. The cause of this contraction is well-documented: wetland drainage for agriculture and urban development; floodplain modification (channelisation, levee construction, dam impoundment) that eliminates the slow, shallow, vegetated backwaters the fish requires; eutrophication from agricultural nitrogen and phosphorus runoff, which drives duckweed and filamentous algae blooms that shade out and displace the rooted macrophytes essential for spawning and prey; siltation that fills shallow wetland basins; and competition from the invasive western mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis), which has established in many former habitat sites.

The groundwater dependency identified in Wisconsin surveys adds a further vulnerability — populations tied to spring seeps and spring-fed backwaters are exposed to the effects of groundwater extraction and aquifer drawdown that may reduce or eliminate the thermal and hydrological buffering those inputs provide. Conservation of this species at the regional scale depends on the preservation and restoration of macrophyte-rich, shallow floodplain wetlands connected to stable groundwater sources.
