Taxonomy & naming
Fundulus zebrinus was described by David Starr Jordan and Charles Henry Gilbert in 1883, making it one of the many North American freshwater fishes documented during the great post-Civil War surveys of western river systems. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) records the valid name as Fundulus zebrinus Jordan & Gilbert, 1883. The species belongs to the family Fundulidae, the topminnows, within the order Cyprinodontiformes. The genus Fundulus is the largest in the family and spans eastern and central North America as well as northern Mexico.
For much of the twentieth century, populations in the northern Great Plains and Red River of the North basin were treated as a subspecies, Fundulus zebrinus kansae. Allozyme and mitochondrial DNA analyses (Nelson et al. 2004) supported elevating kansae to full species rank, and the American Fisheries Society formally recognised Fundulus kansae as a distinct species. As a result, Fundulus zebrinus sensu stricto is now restricted to the southern portion of the original aggregate range — the central and southern plains from Colorado and Nebraska south through Kansas and Oklahoma to the Rio Grande and Brazos drainages of Texas and into adjacent Mexico. The species is not currently known to hybridise with other Fundulus in the wild within its restricted range, though its contact zone with F. kansae has been incompletely characterised.
Morphology
The plains killifish is a slender, cylindrical topminnow with a somewhat flattened head — an adaptation to life in shallow, fast-moving sandy runs. FishBase records a maximum total length of 3 in, with a common length of 2.5 in; the USGS Nonindigenous Aquatic Species database gives a maximum of approximately 4 in for the species in the broader sense before the kansae split. Males are smaller and more slender than females at equivalent ages.
The common name and the specific epithet both refer to the species' most conspicuous feature: a series of bold, dark vertical bars on the flanks that recall the stripes of a zebra. These bars are more strongly expressed in males than in females and intensify during courtship. The body colouration is otherwise sandy to olive-brown dorsally, fading to cream or pale yellow ventrally. The dorsal, caudal, and anal fins may carry faint barring in breeding males. The head is small and the mouth terminal to slightly upturned — a topminnow's feeding geometry, suited to picking prey from the water surface and mid-column as well as the substrate.
The species shares with several other Fundulus a peculiar behaviour: when stressed or during extreme temperature events, individuals will bury themselves headfirst in soft sand, leaving only the tail protruding. This is documented by FishBase and is almost certainly a thermoregulatory and desiccation-avoidance strategy in a fish that inhabits shallow prairie streams subject to dramatic temperature swings.
Habitat
Fundulus zebrinus is a creature of the open Great Plains, native to the Mississippi River and Gulf Slope basins from north-central Montana and central Wyoming south through Nebraska, Colorado, Kansas, and Oklahoma to the Brazos River, Galveston Bay, and the Rio Grande drainage in Texas, with populations extending into northern Mexico (FishBase; USGS NAS). Within this range it occupies the headwaters, creeks, and small-to-medium rivers of the plains — specifically the shallow, sandy-bottomed, often braided channels that typify prairie stream systems.
What distinguishes this species ecologically is its extraordinary tolerance of the chemical extremes that characterise many plains streams. FishBase notes that it tolerates 'extremely alkaline and saline streams' to a degree unique among North American killifish — a reflection of the calcium-rich, carbonate-buffered geology of the interior plains where groundwater-fed streams can reach pH values and conductivities that exclude most freshwater fishes. Temperature is correspondingly variable: prairie streams experience some of the widest thermal ranges of any North American fish habitat, from near-freezing in winter to temperatures approaching 95 °F in summer shallows. The cache records a typical aquarium range of 68–77 °F.
The species is most abundant in sand-bottomed runs and pool-riffle transitions with some current. It avoids heavily silted or macrophyte-choked stretches. The sand-burying behaviour implies that the substrate itself is part of the ecological niche — fine to medium sand provides both thermal refuge and an escape from predators.
Feeding
Fundulus zebrinus is an omnivore. The USGS NAS records the diet as omnivorous, and this is consistent with the foraging ecology of the genus more broadly: plains killifish take aquatic invertebrates (midge larvae, small crustaceans, mayfly nymphs), small molluscs, surface-drifting insects, and vegetable matter as opportunity allows. The upturned to terminal mouth and the ability to exploit both the surface film and the sandy substrate suggest a generalist feeding strategy appropriate to the patchy productivity of prairie streams.
In aquarium conditions the species is an undemanding and enthusiastic feeder. It accepts high-quality dried foods — pellets and flakes — alongside frozen or live invertebrates. Small live or frozen bloodworm, daphnia, brine shrimp, and mosquito larvae are all taken readily. A varied diet that includes plant-based components supports long-term health in a species that is naturally omnivorous. Feeding is active and competitive; the species can be bold enough to out-compete slower or more retiring tankmates.
Mating
The plains killifish is a non-annual killifish classified by the American Killifish Association in Class 1: New World Non-Annuals. This means it inhabits permanent or near-permanent water and reproduces by depositing adhesive eggs on fine-leaved plants, roots, or synthetic spawning mops — the eggs incubate in water with no diapause phase and no need for peat-moss burial. This distinguishes it fundamentally from the annual killifish of South America and Africa, which lay eggs in substrate that must dry completely before hatching can occur.
Breeding season in wild populations follows seasonal warming, running from approximately March through September in Red River-basin populations. Males display prominently, intensifying the vertical barring and adopting postures that showcase the patterning to females. A pair will align side by side and deposit eggs singly or in small batches on vegetation, roots, or mop fibres at or near the substrate. The adhesive eggs cling to the substrate and are then left; the adults provide no parental care. Multiple spawning events occur across the breeding season, consistent with the long-lived, non-annual strategy in which reproductive investment is spread over months rather than concentrated in a single mass spawning.
Breeding
In aquarium conditions, spawning can be stimulated by raising the temperature into the upper part of the preferred range (above approximately 72 °F / 72 °F) and conditioning the pair on varied, protein-rich foods. The American Killifish Association's breeding records confirm that spawning mops or fine-leaved plants serve as the spawning medium; eggs are deposited singly or in small groups and adhere to the fibres.
Eggs incubate in the water column attached to the mop — unlike annual species, no drying or peat-moss incubation is needed or beneficial. Incubation time depends on temperature but is typically one to two weeks at 72–75 °F. The fry are relatively large and robust at hatching and will accept baby brine shrimp nauplii and micro-worm from the outset. Parents do not actively prey on eggs if provided with adequate cover and feeding, but removing the mop or separating eggs into a rearing container is standard practice to maximise survival. Growth is steady; the fish reaches sexual maturity in several months and can live two to three years in good conditions — a typical lifespan for a non-annual Fundulus.
In the aquarium
The plains killifish is rated by the American Killifish Association as suitable for beginners among killifish keepers, and its hardiness makes it a reasonable entry point into the non-annual North American Fundulus. It is active, boldly patterned, and tolerant of the range of tap-water conditions typical of the US Midwest and South — including moderately alkaline, moderately hard water that would challenge many soft-water killifish. An aquarium in the range of 15–20 US gal is adequate for a small group or a breeding pair.
Decorations can be kept simple: a sand substrate that allows the fish to exhibit the natural burying behaviour is ideal, with some floating plants or a spawning mop for egg-deposition sites. Strong filtration is not required, but clean, well-oxygenated water is beneficial. The species is active in the upper to mid-water column and benefits from some open swimming space. It can be kept with similarly sized, non-aggressive North American native fishes in a species-appropriate community, but small tankmates risk predation, particularly once fish grow to full size.
The species is available through the American Killifish Association's fish-distribution network and from specialist native fish keepers, though it is infrequently seen in general aquarium retail. The AKA journal has published at least 25 articles documenting its care and breeding over the decades, making it one of the better-documented American Fundulus in the hobby literature.
Conservation
Fundulus zebrinus was assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN in 2019 (assessor: Lyons, T.J.; NatureServe), reflecting its wide native range across the central and southern Great Plains and the absence of evidence of significant range-wide decline. The species has high resilience — FishBase calculates a minimum population doubling time of under 15 months — and a vulnerability index of just 10 out of 100, indicating low susceptibility to overexploitation or localised population loss at the range scale.
Nonetheless, the plains killifish faces the pressures common to prairie stream fish across the interior of North America: flow alteration and dewatering from agricultural irrigation withdrawals, which reduce or eliminate the shallow, sandy runs that the species depends on; siltation from upland erosion that degrades the sand-substrate habitat; and the increasing salinity and temperature extremes associated with reduced flows in already-marginal streams. The formal recognition of Fundulus kansae as a separate species in the northern part of the aggregate range has narrowed the documented range of F. zebrinus sensu stricto, and the conservation status of populations in the southern extreme of the range — particularly in the Rio Grande drainage and northern Mexico — may warrant more localised assessment as pressure on trans-boundary water resources increases.
