Taxonomy & naming
Llanolebias stellifer was first described by James E. Thomerson and Brian J. Turner in 1973 as Rivulus stellifer, based on specimens from Caño Benito in Barinas state, Venezuela, published in Copeia (p. 783, figs. 1–2). The name was later moved twice: to Pituna (1989) and then to Rachovia (1998), before Hrbek and Taphorn (2008) erected the monotypic genus Llanolebias in Zootaxa 1734: 27–42 to accommodate it in its final and current placement. The authority is therefore presented in parentheses because the species has been transferred from its original genus. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid combination as Llanolebias stellifer (Thomerson & Turner, 1973).
The genus name Llanolebias is a compound of 'llanos' — the vast seasonally flooded savannas of Venezuela and Colombia — and the suffix -lebias, from the Greek lebias (a small fish), widely used across South American killi nomenclature. The specific epithet stellifer derives from the Latin stella (star) and -fer (bearing, carrying), a reference to the star-like iridescent spotting on the flanks of males in breeding dress. Llanolebias contains only this one species; it is phylogenetically placed within the South American annual killifish clade (AKA Class 3).
Morphology
Llanolebias stellifer reaches a maximum standard length of 3 in (FishBase; It Rains Fishes), though most individuals encountered in the hobby and the field are somewhat smaller. The body plan is typical of the South American annual killifish lineage: moderately compressed, robust through the midsection, and tapering to a rounded caudal fin. Males are the more colourful sex, displaying iridescent spotting across the flanks that gives the species its star-bearing name; background colouration in males tends toward olive-brown to grey-green with metallic sheen.
Females are plainer, as is typical among annual rivulids — their colouration is more uniform brownish-grey and their fins less elaborately patterned. Sexual dimorphism is present and clear, making sex identification straightforward in adult fish. The robust body and relatively large head are consistent with a predatory lifestyle in shallow, turbid pool environments where visibility is low.
Habitat
In the Venezuelan Llanos, Llanolebias stellifer occupies temporary, seasonal pools that form across the low-lying savanna as the Orinoco basin floods during the wet season. The pools documented at type localities — Caño Benito, Agua Negra (Barinas), and Guanarito — are typically shallow, reaching only around 23.5 in in depth, turbid, and shaded by dense tree or shrub cover overhead. The water surface is often carpeted with floating vegetation such as duckweed, which reduces evaporation and light penetration and creates the dim, warm microenvironment the species inhabits.
Water chemistry recorded at collection sites reflects the soft, slightly acidic character of Llanos pool water: pH around 6.2 and temperature of 79 °F have been documented (It Rains Fishes). These pools are ephemeral by nature — they refill with each wet season and contract to bare, cracked mud during the dry months. The fish's entire biology is organised around this annual cycle: populations complete a full generation within the lifespan of the pool, and the buried eggs are the only biological material that bridges wet seasons.
Feeding
Llanolebias stellifer is a carnivore, feeding on small invertebrates, aquatic insects, crustaceans, and other small prey available in the seasonal pools of the Llanos. The turbid, organically rich water of these pools supports dense invertebrate communities during the wet season, providing abundant food for a fast-growing annual that must reach sexual maturity and spawn before the pool dries.
In the aquarium, the species accepts live and frozen foods readily — small live invertebrates, Daphnia, Artemia nauplii, chironomid (bloodworm), and similar meaty items are appropriate. Both sexes can be aggressive toward one another and toward other fish in the confined space of a tank, so feeding adequate quantities to reduce competition is important. A high-protein diet supports the fast growth required of an annual species.
Mating
Llanolebias stellifer is an annual substrate-spawner in the truest sense: males and females actively dive together into the soft substrate — peat, mud, or detritus on the pool bottom — to deposit eggs. The act of spawning is a cooperative dive, with the pair driving downward into the medium, depositing eggs and milt simultaneously below the surface, then withdrawing. The eggs are amber-coloured, approximately 0.5 in in diameter, and are left embedded in the substrate rather than attached to plants or scattered in open water.
Both sexes are aggressive in captivity, which complicates husbandry: males pursue females relentlessly, and females may also show aggression toward males. The behaviour is consistent with the intense, time-pressured reproductive effort of a fish whose entire adult life may span a single wet season. Males in breeding condition develop their most vivid iridescent colouration and compete for access to females and to suitable spawning sites within the substrate.
Breeding
The eggs of Llanolebias stellifer undergo diapause — a state of arrested embryonic development — allowing them to survive the complete desiccation of the natal pool during the dry season. Buried in the substrate, they remain viable through months of drought, their development suspended until rising wet-season water triggers hatching. Incubation under aquarium conditions with the standard peat storage method takes approximately 3–4 months (It Rains Fishes).
In captivity, spawning is conducted over a layer of peat or coir substrate placed in the tank. After a period of spawning activity — typically several weeks — the peat is removed, lightly squeezed to remove excess water, sealed in a plastic bag, and stored at room temperature for the diapause period. After 3–4 months the peat is placed in shallow warm water, and fry begin to hatch within hours. Fry are relatively large for killifish and can take Artemia nauplii immediately; water quality during rearing is critical as they grow quickly and produce considerable waste. The adults themselves are typically short-lived even in captivity, consistent with their wild annual life history.
In the aquarium
Llanolebias stellifer is an intermediate-level killifish for hobbyists comfortable with the annual peat-spawning routine. A dedicated species tank of moderate size — 10 US gal or more for a breeding pair or trio — with a dark substrate, gentle filtration, floating plants to dim the light, and a layer of peat or fine substrate for spawning is the standard setup. Water temperature around 75–79 °F and pH near 6.0–6.5, reflecting the conditions at Venezuelan collection sites, are appropriate starting points.
Intraspecific aggression is a management concern. Males harass females persistently, so multiple females per male, or brief timed introductions for spawning followed by separation, are common strategies. Hides and dense cover reduce stress. The fish is not suited to a community tank: it is a predator that will consume small tankmates, and its specific requirements for annual maintenance — removing and storing peat, re-wetting at precise intervals — are best managed in a dedicated setup.
The species has been documented in the hobby since at least 1979 (JAKA) and is maintained by specialist killifish clubs and breeders globally. American Killifish Association (AKA) member records form the core of its captive history outside Venezuela. As with all annual killies, the peat-storage and re-wetting cycle is the central husbandry act; keeping careful notes on incubation timing and batch management is essential for sustained breeding success.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Llanolebias stellifer as Least Concern (LC) in 2019, under the assessment authored by G. Echevarría. The species has a small but apparently stable range within the Orinoco basin of Venezuela, with records from multiple Llanos localities indicating it is not a hyper-restricted single-site endemic.
Nonetheless, the pressures facing seasonal-pool fauna across the Venezuelan Llanos are real and increasing. Agricultural expansion, drainage of wetlands for cattle pasture, and altered hydrology from road and irrigation infrastructure all threaten the ephemeral pools on which strictly annual killifish depend. Unlike perennial-water species that can recolonise from nearby refugia after a disturbance, a pool-based annual that loses its wet season cannot recover from adjacent habitat — the population's only persistence mechanism is the buried egg bank, which is itself destroyed if the substrate is disturbed or the pool is permanently drained.
Llanolebias stellifer benefits from its status as the sole member of its genus, which brings taxonomic interest and hobbyist attention. Captive populations maintained by AKA members and specialist breeders worldwide represent a meaningful ex-situ reserve, though killifish collections cycle rapidly and long-term genetic diversity in captivity is uncertain. Continued field surveys across the Barinas and Portuguesa states of Venezuela would help clarify population distribution and monitor any trends under ongoing habitat pressure.
