Apistogramma flabellicauda is a small dwarf cichlid from the blackwater rivers of the upper Orinoco in southern Venezuela, described in 2011 by Lina Mesa Salazar and Carlos Lasso during their revision of the genus in the Orinoco basin. Its name means 'fan-tail,' after the fan-like spread of dark bands across the male's rounded caudal fin. To aquarists it is one of a trio of near-identical sailfin dwarfs — with Apistogramma uaupesi and Apistogramma lineata — that even veteran Apisto keepers cannot tell apart without a collection locality and a clear look at the tail, and whose separateness as species is genuinely disputed. Almost everything reliably known about the fish concerns where it lives and the extraordinary soft, acid, tannin-stained water it lives in; its wild life history is essentially undocumented.

Taxonomy & naming

Apistogramma flabellicauda was described in 2011 by Lina M. Mesa Salazar and Carlos A. Lasso in their revision of the genus Apistogramma in the Orinoco basin, published in the Humboldt Institute's series on Colombia's continental aquatic resources. Some aggregators and aquarium texts misattribute the species, but the valid authority confirmed by Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is Mesa S. & Lasso, 2011. The holotype (MHNLS 20376) and two paratypes (MHNLS 18117, 18663) are held at the Museo de Historia Natural La Salle in Caracas, and the nomenclatural act is registered in ZooBank. The type locality is the Río Autana at the La Ceguera rapids (comunidad-raudal La Ceguera), Estado Amazonas, Venezuela — a clearwater-to-blackwater tributary of the upper Orinoco.

Within the genus, Apistogramma flabellicauda sits in the iniridae-complex of the pertensis species-group, in the arrangement used by Mike Wise and the specialist community at apistogramma.com. That complex also holds Apistogramma uaupesi, Apistogramma lineata, Apistogramma iniridae, and a string of undescribed 'sailfin' blackwater forms. Before it was formally described, the fish generally moved through the hobby as Apistogramma uaupesi, or as the upper-Orinoco 'Segelflossen' (sailfin) form of that species. The Catalog of Fishes places it in Cichlidae: Cichlinae (tribe Geophagini) and records its distribution across the Amazon and Orinoco river basins of Venezuela and Colombia.

Its validity is questioned in the open. Both Apistogramma flabellicauda and Apistogramma lineata were diagnosed in 2011 chiefly on colour-pattern characters, and Frank Schäfer of Aquarium Glaser — echoing a long-standing view in the German Apisto literature — notes that Apistogramma uaupesi, Apistogramma flabellicauda, and Apistogramma lineata cannot be reliably separated and, under most current species concepts, are most likely synonyms. No molecular study has yet tested the boundaries among them. The honest summary: the name is firmly established and currently treated as valid, but whether it marks a biological species distinct from Apistogramma uaupesi is unresolved. A practical wrinkle clouds the literature too — blackwater fish sold from the Colombian Río Negro and Río Inírida region as 'Apistogramma cf. flabellicauda' (the trade form 'D21') come from a different drainage than the upper-Orinoco type material, so pinning a given aquarium fish to this name is often impossible without locality data.

Morphology

This is a small, slender dwarf cichlid. FishBase lists a maximum length of about 2 in standard length, and aquarium fish match that — keepers report sexable adults at roughly 1.5–2 in, the male the larger, longer-finned sex. The body plan is the elongate, laterally compressed 'sailfin' form typical of the iniridae-complex, with an extended dorsal fin and a rounded — not lyrate or lanceolate — caudal fin in the male.

The diagnostic feature is also the namesake one: in the male, the rounded tail carries a fan-like arrangement of dark transverse bands or chevrons radiating across the fin — the 'flabellum' (fan) behind the epithet. Colour in life runs to the iridescent blues, reds, and yellows of the head and flanks typical of upper-Orinoco blackwater Apistogramma, but the exact coloration is variable, and that variability is precisely what makes the species so hard to separate from its relatives — within the broader uaupesi group, even single broods can throw males of markedly different colour. Sexual dimorphism follows the genus pattern: males grow larger, with the extended finnage and full tail pattern, while females stay smaller and plainer, turning bright yellow with a strong dark lateral blotch (plus dark markings on throat and belly) in brooding condition. Because the original diagnosis leans so heavily on colour and caudal-pattern characters, a reliable identification in practice needs an adult male in good condition together with its collection locality; juveniles, females, and stressed fish are effectively indistinguishable from the related species.

Habitat

Apistogramma flabellicauda is known with confidence only from the upper Orinoco drainage in Estado Amazonas, Venezuela. The IUCN assessment records it from the Ventuari and Autana rivers, the main channel of the upper Orinoco, and the Cataniapo River, over an estimated extent of occurrence of about 15,425 mi². It is a fish of forested blackwater systems — shallow pools, seasonally flooded areas dominated by Moriche palms (Mauritia), and the pools and rapids of forest streams — where it turns up in high local densities in small patches along the river margins. The substrate is characteristically fine white sand, the underwater landscape structured by submerged wood and drifts of leaf litter that double as feeding ground and spawning sites.

The water itself is the defining feature. Field measurements reported by Mesa & Lasso describe extremely acidic, ion-poor, tannin-stained blackwater: pH roughly 4.5–5.3 and conductivity below 10 µS/cm, essentially free of dissolved minerals. Aquarists keeping the fish aim for the same extremes — soft water at pH around 4.5–6.5 and very low conductivity, at temperatures of about 75–82 °F, warmer for breeding. Closely related fish sold as 'Apistogramma cf. flabellicauda' have been collected in the Colombian Río Negro system, where comparably acidic blackwater prevails, but those populations lie outside the documented range of the species proper.

Feeding

No dedicated diet study has been published for Apistogramma flabellicauda, so its feeding ecology is inferred from the genus and from its habitat rather than measured directly. FishBase places it at an estimated trophic level of about 3.3, in line with the small benthic micro-predator niche shared across Apistogramma: dwarf cichlids of this kind work the substrate and leaf litter for aquatic insect larvae, micro-crustaceans, worms, and other small invertebrates, taking mouthfuls of fine sand and detritus and sifting edible items through the gill rakers. The reliance on fine white sand in its habitat fits that mode — keepers note these fish need fine sand to 'chew,' and that coarse substrate can cause mouth and gill problems. In the nutrient-poor blackwater it inhabits, where productivity is low, the invertebrate fauna of the interstitial spaces and leaf litter is the principal food resource. In aquaria the species takes small live and frozen foods readily and accepts prepared foods of suitable size.

Mating

Pre-spawning behaviour has not been described from the wild for Apistogramma flabellicauda; what is reported comes from aquarium observation and from the general biology of the iniridae-complex. Like its close relatives, it is best understood as a cave-spawning dwarf cichlid in which a male holds a loose territory overlapping the smaller territories of one or more females, each centred on a sheltered cavity. Males display their extended finnage and the full caudal fan pattern in courtship and in disputes with rival males. Females signal readiness through a striking change of livery — turning vivid yellow with an intensified black lateral blotch and dark throat and belly markings — and it is the female who chooses and defends the spawning cave. Aquarists report fish pairing and spawning readily under appropriate soft, acidic conditions, sometimes even when kept in groups. Beyond this genus-typical sketch, the species' mating system in nature is undocumented.

Breeding

Breeding has not been documented in the wild, and there is no published clutch count or developmental series specific to Apistogramma flabellicauda; the account here is genus-typical, drawn from aquarium experience with this and closely related blackwater species. It is a cave (substrate) spawner with maternal brood care: the female deposits a small clutch of adhesive eggs on the ceiling or wall of a concealed cavity — a rock crevice, a hollow under wood, or in aquaria a coconut shell or inverted pot — which the male fertilizes. She then tends and fans the clutch and guards the larvae and free-swimming fry, while the male defends the wider territory; brood sizes in dwarf cichlids of this type are modest, on the order of a few dozen eggs.

Water chemistry is the central, well-attested requirement. Eggs and fry develop only in very soft, strongly acidic water — the near-zero-conductivity, low-pH blackwater of the fish's native rivers — without which the spawn typically fails. Warmer temperatures toward the upper end of the tolerated range (around 81–82 °F) are used to trigger and sustain breeding. Because this fish is so hard to tell reliably from Apistogramma uaupesi and Apistogramma lineata, much aquarium 'breeding' information attributed to one of the three may in practice apply to all of them.

In the aquarium

Apistogramma flabellicauda is very rarely kept. Described only in 2011 and still barely distinguishable in the trade from Apistogramma uaupesi and Apistogramma lineata — the three names are, commercially speaking, nearly interchangeable — it comes with thin aquarium experience under its own name. Almost everything below is either inferred from the species' documented biology or generalised from closely related soft-water Apistogramma of the iniridae-complex kept by specialist hobbyists; where advice is genus-typical rather than species-specific, it is flagged as such.

Water: the non-negotiable starting point, and the single most common reason these fish fail in captivity. The Río Autana and upper Orinoco waters where Apistogramma flabellicauda lives measure pH around 4.5–5.3 and conductivity near or below 10 µS/cm — essentially distilled, tannin-dark, mineral-free. Keepers of iniridae-complex dwarfs work with RO or rain water remineralised to single-digit conductivity and held at pH 5.0–6.5; anything above pH 7.0 is genuinely harmful and, over time, suppresses colour, activity, breeding, and immune function. Temperatures of 75–82 °F suit general maintenance, with the upper end used for conditioning and spawning. Dried botanicals — Indian almond leaves, alder cones, dried catappa bark — help both chemically (a little more acidification and tannin) and behaviourally (shelter and visual security).

Tank: a dedicated setup is strongly preferred. A pair, or a harem of one male with two or three females, does well in a well-planted 60–80-litre tank; footprint matters more than volume, since these are shallow-water, lateral-space fish. Fine white sand is important — not just for authenticity but because the sifting feeding behaviour needs fine material, and coarse or bare-bottom substrate is linked to mouth and gill abrasion in sand-sifting dwarfs. Add driftwood, coconut-shell caves or small ceramic tubes (the spawning substrate and female refuges), and generous cover of floating or low-growing plants. Keep the tank mature and gently filtered — sponge filtration is standard, and strong currents stress these small, still-water fish. Dither fish help: small, soft-water-tolerant tetras (cardinal or rummy-nose in appropriate chemistry) reduce skittishness and give the dwarfs the security to display and breed.

Tankmates and behaviour: cave-spawning follows the genus-typical pattern set out under Breeding, and a harem rather than a strict pair is often recommended because it dilutes male aggression — a male in a too-small tank with a single female can harass her to death after spawning, especially while she is brooding. Multiple males in a small tank, conversely, fight destructively; one male per setup is the rule. Females are reliably sexed only as adults: smaller body, rounder profile, no extended fin rays, and the bright yellow-and-black breeding dress when conditioning. Juveniles and sub-adults cannot be told by eye from the related species without a confirmed collection locality.

Common mistakes: with iniridae-complex dwarfs, the recurring errors are hard alkaline tap water, an exclusively dry-pellet diet, temperatures below 73 °F, and strong filtration that creates current. Any one of these alone can prevent spawning; together they produce a fish that survives but never thrives. Given the rarity and taxonomic ambiguity of Apistogramma flabellicauda proper, treat any fish sold under this name as a tentative identification — keeping confirmed locality data with the fish is the only way to know what you actually have. In short, this is not a beginner's fish: it wants precise, stable soft-acid water, a mature blackwater system, live or frozen foods for conditioning, and the patience to keep a species that may go weeks without conspicuous activity before spawning suddenly.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Apistogramma flabellicauda as Least Concern (Echevarría, assessed 6 May 2017, published 2019; reviewed by C. Sayer). The reasoning rests on a relatively wide extent of occurrence across several upper-Orinoco rivers and the judgment that threats are localised, with subpopulations in any degraded water bodies potentially rescued from more pristine areas; the population trend is recorded as unknown and no population size is estimated, though the species occurs in high densities in small littoral patches. It carries no CITES or CMS listing.

The principal documented threat is deforestation of riparian forest to establish villages, which alters the limnology of these drainages and shrinks the flooded-forest habitat the fish depends on; the assessment notes a continuing decline in habitat quality. Roughly half the range is estimated to fall within Yapacana National Park, but the assessors caution that this protection may be insufficient given gold-mining activity near and inside the park. Whether the species is harvested for the ornamental trade under its own name is unknown, although the broader pool of look-alike 'sailfin' blackwater Apistogramma — including fish sold as Apistogramma cf. flabellicauda — does move in the hobby. As with much of the Orinoco's poorly studied ichthyofauna, the more pressing limitation is simply data: more sampling is needed to gauge population trends and the real impact of forest loss on this small, blackwater-restricted cichlid.
