Taxonomy & naming
Melanorivulus modestus was described by Wilson J. E. M. Costa in 1991, with the type locality recorded as Rio Mutum, a tributary within the broader Tapajós River system of Mato Grosso / Pará, Brazil. Costa placed the species in Rivulus, the catch-all genus that formerly housed the majority of South American rivuline killifishes, and the parenthetical authority reflects that subsequent revisions have relocated it. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes recognises the valid combination as Melanorivulus modestus (Costa, 1991).
The genus Melanorivulus was erected to accommodate a monophyletic lineage of South American rivulines that share a suite of derived morphological and pigmentation characters distinguishing them from true Rivulus. A 2024 study published in Neotropical Ichthyology documented closely related species from adjacent basins — including M. melanopterus Nielsen & Ohara, 2024 from the Tapajós equivalent and material from the rio Juruena — underscoring that M. modestus sits within a species complex where geographic isolation has driven repeated speciation across the Tapajós–Juruena system. The taxonomy of this group remains actively worked, and additional species-level revisions are likely as more basin surveys are completed.
The ETYFish Project records that the specific epithet modestus is Latin for modest or unassuming, a direct allusion to the relatively discreet, understated colour pattern of males — a rare instance of a species named for what it lacks rather than for a striking feature.
Morphology
Melanorivulus modestus is a slender, laterally compressed killifish reaching a maximum recorded total length of 1.5 in (FishBase). The body plan is the classic rivuline shape: elongated and somewhat cylindrical toward the anterior, narrowing to a moderately broad caudal peduncle. The unpaired fins are rounded; the dorsal fin is set well back, positioned roughly above or just behind the origin of the anal fin in the manner typical of the subfamily Rivulinae.
Coloration in males is the definitive 'modest' character from which the species draws its name: the flanks are generally brownish to olive with fine dark spotting or reticulation, lacking the vivid red-and-blue iridescence seen in many of its congeners. A faint iridescent sheen can appear under strong light. Females are still more cryptically coloured, with a plain brownish-tan body and inconspicuous spotting, and they tend to be slightly deeper-bodied when gravid. Sexual dimorphism is therefore present but subtle compared with many killifish species — the male's colour, though restrained, is still clearly more patterned than the female's.
Habitat
Melanorivulus modestus is endemic to Brazil, native to the Tapajós River basin of the central Amazon region. The type locality is the Rio Mutum, and related material and sister species have been found in the adjacent rio Juruena system, suggesting that the broader Tapajós–Juruena drainage complex is the core of this species group's range. Within this basin the species occupies permanent freshwater streams and pools — habitats characterised by forest cover, leaf litter accumulation, and soft to slightly acidic water.
FishBase records the water parameters as 77–82 °F and pH 6.5–7.0, figures consistent with the clear-water and white-water tributaries draining the southern Amazon shield, which tend toward a near-neutral to mildly acidic chemistry rather than the extreme blackwater of the Rio Negro drainage. The species is classified as benthopelagic and freshwater-only, occupying the lower water column and substrate zones among roots, leaf litter, and fine vegetation. It is not tolerant of seasonal desiccation — as a non-annual species it requires permanent or near-permanent water, making forest-stream integrity the primary habitat requirement.
Feeding
Like most small rivuline killifishes, Melanorivulus modestus is a carnivore in the wild, feeding on the small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, microcrustaceans, worms, and zooplankton — that colonise the leaf litter and root tangles of its forest-stream habitat. The species' modest size (1.5 in maximum) constrains it to prey small enough to swallow whole, and it is likely an opportunistic surface and mid-water feeder as much as a bottom-sifter.
In captivity the fish is straightforward to maintain on live and frozen foods. Artemia nauplii (brine shrimp larvae) are a reliable staple and the preferred first food for fry. Adults accept frozen bloodworm, Daphnia, and small tubifex, and many individuals will eventually take high-quality dried micro-pellets. Variety in the diet supports good colour and condition. Overfeeding should be avoided in the small tank volumes typically used for this species; water quality deteriorates quickly when uneaten food is left.
Mating
Melanorivulus modestus is a non-annual killifish and a plant spawner, meaning it reproduces continuously across extended periods rather than concentrating reproduction into a single annual event tied to wet and dry seasons. In permanent forest streams there is no cyclical desiccation to trigger mass spawning, and the fish instead spawns in small daily batches over weeks or months, depositing adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants, moss, roots, or fibrous spawning mops.
Spawning is performed by a paired male and female, typically near the surface or in shallow cover. The pair align side by side and the male curves his body around the female during each egg deposition, releasing sperm simultaneously. Keepers report 5–15 eggs being laid per day across extended sessions. The eggs are 0.5 in in diameter and amber-coloured, and they adhere to the spawning medium on contact. Males can be highly aggressive toward one another and will stress females if kept in cramped quarters; the mating system appears to be based on male territory defence around a spawning site, with females visiting to spawn.
Breeding
Breeding Melanorivulus modestus in the aquarium follows the standard approach for non-annual plant-spawning killifishes. A densely planted species tank or a container with floating spawning mops of dark nylon wool allows pairs to deposit eggs daily without risk to the fry from the parents, as long as the eggs are collected regularly. Eggs should be inspected and any that show fungus removed; a small dose of acriflavine in the incubation water is a widely used precaution. Infertile or fungused eggs can quickly spread to neighbouring healthy eggs if not removed promptly.
Incubation takes approximately 14 days at the recommended water temperature of 77–82 °F, after which the fry hatch as free-swimming juveniles. The fry are small but accept Artemia nauplii immediately and grow steadily if fed multiple times daily. The laborious daily egg-collection regime is offset by the fish's lifespan of around three years — considerably longer than the annual killifish that dominate many collections — and by the continuous productivity of a well-conditioned pair. Sexual maturity is reached at approximately 4–5 months. The fish are accomplished jumpers and an escape-proof lid is essential at all stages from fry tank onward.
In the aquarium
Melanorivulus modestus is considered a challenging species by hobbyist accounts — not because it is delicate in terms of disease resistance, but because it requires attentive management of aggression and water quality in the small tank volumes appropriate to its size. A dedicated species pair tank of as little as 2.5 US gal is sufficient for a breeding pair, but the male's aggression toward the female means she must have visual cover and the keeper must monitor condition closely. A second female or a larger tank with more visual breaks reduces harassment.
Water should be maintained at 77–82 °F and pH 6.5–7.0; soft to moderately hard water is appropriate. Peat filtration or peat substrate is used by many keepers to soften and slightly acidify the water and to reproduce the tannin-tinged conditions of the natural forest stream. Dark substrate and subdued lighting reduce stress and bring out the male's best colouration. A tight-fitting lid is absolutely mandatory — this is an excellent jumper and will exit a tank through any gap. Routine partial water changes are important to maintain the water quality that eggs and fry are sensitive to.
In the killifish hobby, M. modestus is appreciated as a manageable representative of the South American rivulines that demonstrates the group's plant-spawning biology without the extreme aggression or rarity of some relatives. Its relatively long lifespan of around three years and the continuous spawning rhythm suit keepers who prefer an ongoing breeding project to the annual killi's intensive dry-incubation cycle.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Melanorivulus modestus as Least Concern (version 2025-2), reflecting that no major population decline is currently documented across its range in the Tapajós River basin of Brazil. As a non-annual species reliant on permanent forest streams rather than seasonal floodplain pools, it is less immediately vulnerable to the direct effects of deforestation-driven stream drying than some annual killifishes of the Brazilian savanna margin, but it is not insulated from the broader trajectory of Amazonian deforestation.
The Tapajós basin is under sustained pressure from large-scale soy agriculture, cattle ranching, illegal gold mining (garimpo), and hydropower development — most notably the Belo Monte complex and the proposed São Luiz do Tapajós dam, which would affect considerable stretches of river and associated forest-stream habitats within the species' range. The narrow-basin endemism documented for M. modestus and its close relatives, combined with the ongoing pace of environmental change across the southern Amazon, means that the current Least Concern status could shift in a future assessment if stream-habitat surveys show localised declines. Continued systematic collecting within the Tapajós–Juruena drainage and taxonomic resolution of the modestus species complex are needed before a fully informed conservation picture is possible.
