Taxonomy & naming
Ancistrus luzia was formally described by Neuhaus, Britto, Birindelli and Sousa in 2022, published in Neotropical Ichthyology volume 20, issue 1 (e210129). The holotype (MNRJ 51458) is an adult male measuring 3 in standard length, collected from a tributary of the rio Teles Pires in the Tapajós basin, municipality of Guarantã do Norte, Mato Grosso, Brazil. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Ancistrus luzia as a valid species.
The species represents the second Ancistrus known from the Xingu basin and the fourth from the Tapajós basin, adding to the remarkable diversity of bristlenose catfishes in these two river systems. In the aquarium trade it circulates under the provisional designation L159, a DATZ code assigned to fish collected from the Tapajós basin before the species was formally named.
A. luzia is distinguished from related Tapajós species principally by its unique dark vermiculated body pattern running almost the entire length of the body, a narrower head profile, a relatively large internostril distance, the absence of rows of enlarged odontodes on lateral plates, and a fully developed adipose fin — a feature absent or rudimentary in some congeners from the same drainage. It can be told from the superficially similar A. ranunculus by its smaller overall size and smaller gill opening.
Morphology
Examined specimens range up to 3.5 in standard length, with the holotype measuring 3 in SL. The body is covered in the overlapping bony scutes typical of all loricariids. The most diagnostic external feature is the dense, dark vermiculated pattern — irregular worm-like stripes and blotches on a paler background — which covers almost the entire body surface, including the head.
The head is notably narrow compared with many Ancistrus congeners, and the internostril distance is comparatively large. The adipose fin is fully developed, distinguishing A. luzia from some related species in which it is reduced or absent. Lateral plates lack the rows of enlarged odontodes seen in certain allies.
Sexual dimorphism follows the general Ancistrus pattern. Adult males develop branched, fleshy tentacles on the snout and along the snout margin — the 'bristles' that give the genus its common name. Females may develop short, unbranched bristles along the snout rim but lack the elaborate, branching tentacles of males. The two sexes also differ in urogenital papilla structure, which can be examined in preserved or closely observed live fish. Gravid females broaden noticeably across the body when viewed from above.
Habitat
Ancistrus luzia is known from the Tapajós and Xingu river basins of Brazil, two of the great clearwater river systems draining the crystalline Precambrian shield of central Brazil. The type locality is a small tributary of the rio Teles Pires, Tapajós basin, in the municipality of Guarantã do Norte, Mato Grosso.
Like other Tapajós and Xingu Ancistrus, this species almost certainly inhabits rocky and wood-strewn stream and river margins, wedging into crevices and sheltering beneath submerged boulders and root tangles. The rivers of the Tapajós basin where A. luzia occurs are subject to significant human alteration: the Teles Pires River has been impounded by a cascade of hydropower dams (São Manoel, Teles Pires, Colíder, Sinop), which have transformed river geomorphology, altered sediment regimes, and flooded or fragmented reaches of original habitat. The authors of the original description noted these threats specifically in relation to A. luzia populations.

Feeding
Specific dietary data for Ancistrus luzia in the wild are not available in current literature. As a member of Ancistrus, it is expected to be primarily an aufwuchs and biofilm grazer, rasping algae, periphyton, diatoms, and fine detritus from hard substrates — rock faces, submerged boulders, and woody debris — using the ventrally placed, bicuspid teeth characteristic of the genus.
In the aquarium, Ancistrus species are reliably maintained on high-quality sinking algae wafers and spirulina-based foods as a base, supplemented with blanched vegetables (courgette, cucumber, sweet potato, spinach). Driftwood should be available as both shelter and a supplementary rasping surface. Occasional offerings of frozen or live invertebrate foods may be accepted. Heavy protein diets are not recommended for this genus.
Mating
No specific mating observations for Ancistrus luzia are recorded in available literature. The genus Ancistrus is well characterised in its reproductive biology across multiple species, and A. luzia can be expected to follow this pattern closely.
Males establish and defend cavity territories — crevices in rock, hollow sections of wood, or similar enclosed spaces — particularly during the breeding season. The elaborately branched snout tentacles of the male are thought to play a role in male-to-male competition and possibly female assessment. Males may compete vigorously for suitable spawning sites, and two mature males in a confined space may fight. A receptive female is coaxed into the male's chosen cavity to deposit eggs.
Breeding
No breeding records specific to Ancistrus luzia are documented in available sources. The general Ancistrus breeding mode — a cave-spawning strategy with paternal brood care — is well established across the genus and is the expected mode for this species.
In the typical Ancistrus pattern, eggs are deposited adhesively on the walls or ceiling of the spawning cavity. The male then remains with the clutch, fanning the eggs continuously with his pectoral fins to maintain adequate oxygenation and removing any infertile or fungused eggs. Incubation at tropical aquarium temperatures typically spans several days, after which fry emerge as miniature replicas of the adults. The male continues to guard the juveniles until they are free-swimming and independent.
Aquarists wishing to attempt breeding A. luzia should provide suitable caves or crevices (ceramic breeding tubes, coconut husk halves, sections of PVC pipe, or dense tangles of driftwood), maintain clean, well-oxygenated water with regular partial changes, and condition the pair on a varied diet.
In the aquarium
Ancistrus luzia became known to aquarists under the trade code L159 from Tapajós basin collections before its formal description in 2022. As a modest-sized Ancistrus reaching under 3.5 in standard length, it is compatible with a wide range of community setups. A single specimen or a pair can be kept in a tank of 20 US gal or more; a small group requires proportionally more space and multiple cave territories to reduce male competition.
Water conditions should reflect the clearwater Tapajós origin: soft to moderately soft, slightly acidic to neutral water (pH 6.0–7.2, low conductivity) at temperatures of approximately 75–82 °F. Good filtration and regular water changes are essential; loricariids produce significant waste and are sensitive to accumulated nitrogenous compounds.
Rocky décor with abundant crevices and caves is important both for shelter and breeding potential. Driftwood provides additional rasping surfaces and hiding spots. The species is unlikely to cause significant damage to robust plants. Tankmates should be peaceful; small tetras, Corydoras, and other soft-water community fish from South America make appropriate companions. Males may be intolerant of conspecific males in limited space.
Because the type localities within the Tapajós basin are affected by hydropower development, demand for wild-caught L159 carries conservation implications. Captive-bred animals, where available, are preferred.
Conservation
The original description of Ancistrus luzia (Neuhaus et al. 2022) noted that populations in the Tapajós basin — including the Teles Pires type locality — are affected by a series of large hydropower installations. The São Manoel, Teles Pires, Colíder, and Sinop dams on the Teles Pires River have impounded, fragmented, and altered habitat across a substantial portion of the species' known range. Changes to river flow, sediment transport, thermal stratification, and the inundation of rocky rapids and shore habitat can directly impact rheophilic, rock-dwelling species such as Ancistrus.
Despite these pressures, the authors considered the species Least Concern based on its occurrence across both the Tapajós and Xingu basins and the number of specimens examined (65 individuals from multiple localities). The IUCN Red List assessment reflects this LC status. Continued monitoring of Tapajós and Xingu clearwater fish communities in the context of ongoing and proposed hydroelectric development remains an important conservation priority.
