Melanorivulus pictus is a small, vividly patterned non-annual killifish endemic to the stream headwaters of the Brazilian Cerrado, where it inhabits the upper Rio Paraná drainage and, marginally, the upper Araguaia–Tocantins system. Described from a roadside stream near Brasília in 1989, it became the founding member and type species of the 18-species M. pictus group — a clade of rivulines tightly tied to the gallery forests and ephemeral drainage channels of one of South America's most threatened savanna biomes. Small (to 2 in TL) and notable in wild populations for polymorphism in pelvic-fin presence, it is assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN but is considered very demanding in the aquarium.

Taxonomy & naming

Melanorivulus pictus was originally described as Rivulus pictus by Wilson J. E. M. Costa in 1989, based on 22 specimens collected from córrego Fumal at the crossing of the Brasília federal highway, Distrito Federal, Brazil — a tributary of the Rio São Bartolomeu within the broader Rio Corumbá basin at approximately 15°35'S, 47°40'W. The holotype, MNRJ 11550, is a male measuring 1 in standard length and is held in the Museu Nacional, Rio de Janeiro. The authority is parenthesised because the species has since been removed from the genus in which it was originally placed.

The genus Melanorivulus was erected by Costa in 2011 to accommodate a set of South American rivulines previously spread across Rivulus and related genera; that generic transfer is the reason for the parenthetical authority. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) records the valid name as Melanorivulus pictus (Costa, 1989). Subsequent phylogenetic work published in ZooKeys/Pensoft (Zootaxa series) confirmed that M. pictus is the type species of the M. pictus species group, a clade of 18 currently recognised species distributed primarily through the Brazilian Cerrado across the upper Rio Paraná basin, with outliers extending into the upper Rio Araguaia and Tocantins drainages. Costa's own redescriptions in 1995, 2003, 2005, and 2006 progressively refined the group's boundaries and species-level diagnosis.

An unusual biological feature noted in wild-collected material is polymorphism for pelvic-fin presence: some individuals lack pelvic fins entirely while others carry them normally — a trait variation rarely encountered in teleosts and of interest from a developmental-genetics perspective.

Morphology

Melanorivulus pictus is a slender, laterally compressed rivuline with a maximum recorded total length of 2 in (FishBase), though the holotype and most described specimens measure closer to 1 in standard length, indicating that wild adults commonly remain substantially below the FishBase maximum. The body form is typical of the genus: an elongated, cylindrical to slightly compressed trunk, a relatively large rounded caudal fin, and a dorsal fin positioned far back over the posterior part of the body — a silhouette shared with other rivulines adapted to still or slow, shallow water.

The specific epithet pictus ('painted') alludes to the striking colouration that distinguishes this species. Males display the vivid pattern characteristic of the group: rich metallic flanks overlaid with rows of red to reddish-orange spots or streaks on a blue-green iridescent ground, with colour intensity concentrated along the midlateral stripe and the unpaired fins. The caudal fin typically carries banding or marginal colouration. Females are, as in most rivulines, considerably plainer — brownish to olive, with muted spotting and lacking the metallic sheen of males. The polymorphism in pelvic-fin development documented in wild populations means that pelvic fins cannot be used as a reliable diagnostic character in all individuals.

Habitat

The native range of Melanorivulus pictus is confined to the upper Rio Paraná basin in central Brazil, with records from Distrito Federal and adjacent parts of Goiás state; marginal records from the upper Rio Araguaia and Tocantins drainages have also been attributed to the M. pictus species group. All of these drainages lie within the Brazilian Cerrado — the vast tropical savanna that blankets the central plateau of Brazil and that ranks among the world's biodiversity hotspots for both endemism and habitat loss.

Within this landscape M. pictus occupies small, shallow, slow-moving streams and gallery-forest seepages — the gallery forests (matas de galeria and matas ciliares) that line Cerrado watercourses and provide permanent water and shade in an otherwise strongly seasonal environment. These are typically clear to slightly tea-coloured waters running over sandy or fine-gravelly substrates, shaded by riparian vegetation, with temperatures averaging 72–79 °F (FishBase). Water chemistry in Cerrado gallery streams tends toward soft and mildly acidic to neutral conditions, reflecting the ancient, weathered sedimentary soils of the planalto.

The species is categorised as non-migratory and benthopelagic — associated with the bottom and lower water column of shallow, sheltered microhabitats such as root masses, leaf packs, and marginal vegetation in which adults and juveniles can shelter and spawn. It does not undergo the diapausing annual cycle that characterises the temporary-pool rivulines of the same plateau.

Feeding

Like most small rivulines, Melanorivulus pictus is a generalised micro-predator feeding on whatever small invertebrates are available in its gallery-stream microhabitats: aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans, worms, and other invertebrates that colonise the leaf litter and root masses of its riparian environment. The gut contents of Cerrado stream killifishes typically reflect the richness of allochthonous (terrestrially derived) invertebrate input, particularly during the wet season when insect emergence peaks.

In the aquarium, small-bodied rivulines of this kind are best fed a varied diet of appropriately sized live and frozen invertebrates — Daphnia, Artemia nauplii and adults, bloodworm, micro-worm, and whiteworm — supplemented with small dried foods that the fish will readily accept once acclimatised. Regular live-food feeding supports optimum colouration and breeding condition. Their small mouths limit prey size, and oversized food items should be avoided.

Mating

Melanorivulus pictus is a non-annual killifish: unlike the annual rivulines that breed in temporary rain pools and deposit diapausing eggs in dried mud, this species inhabits permanent or near-permanent gallery streams and reproduces as a plant spawner. Pairs spawn by depositing small numbers of adhesive eggs among fine-leaved aquatic plants, submerged root masses, or fibrous spawning mops over an extended period — releasing a few eggs each day across days or weeks rather than committing a full clutch in a single event.

Courtship involves the male displaying his full colour before the female — flaring the dorsal and caudal fins to exhibit the red spotting and iridescent flanks that give the species its name. When the female is receptive, the pair press together in a brief spawning embrace alongside a plant stem or mop fibre, and a single egg is deposited and fertilised. The eggs are small, transparent, and adhere to the substrate by a short filament or viscous coating. No parental care follows; adults do not guard eggs or fry.

Breeding

Eggs incubate submerged in water at the ambient temperature of 72–79 °F, hatching after approximately 12–16 days depending on temperature — a typical incubation window for non-annual rivulines of similar size. There is no diapause; the embryos develop continuously without a dormancy phase. Fry are small at hatching but are capable free-swimmers quickly and can accept Artemia nauplii from the first days of life, progressing to larger foods as they grow.

In captivity, breeding is most reliably achieved in a dedicated spawning setup: a small aquarium furnished with fine-leaved plants such as Java moss or with commercial spawning mops, maintained at 72–77 °F with soft, slightly acidic water. The spawning medium — mops or clumps of moss — can be removed weekly and the eggs picked individually into a separate small container for incubation, reducing predation risk. Because daily egg production is low, a productive pair over several weeks can yield meaningful numbers of fry. FishBase notes that this species is considered very difficult to maintain in aquarium conditions, suggesting it is intolerant of poor water quality or of fluctuating parameters, and that maintaining stable, clean, well-oxygenated water is important for long-term success.

In the aquarium

Melanorivulus pictus is a specialist species, rated by FishBase as very difficult to maintain — a designation that puts it in the category of killies best suited to experienced hobbyists with the patience to provide stable, well-managed conditions. A small, dedicated aquarium of 10–15 US gal is appropriate for a pair or small group; the tank should be densely planted with fine-leaved vegetation and include floating plants to diffuse light and provide surface cover. Dark substrate and tannin-stained water (from driftwood or botanicals) approximate the gallery-stream environment and help reduce stress and enhance colouration.

Water parameters should reflect the Cerrado stream origin: temperature 72–79 °F, soft to moderately soft (general hardness below 10 °dH), and pH approximately 6.0–7.0. Efficient, gentle filtration that maintains high water quality without generating strong currents is important. The species is small and unlikely to pose a predation threat to fish of similar size, but the colours and personality of rival males mean that dominant males may harass subordinates in small tanks; providing visual breaks with plants or décor reduces conflict.

Because M. pictus belongs to a genus and group with a high degree of locality-specific colour variation across the Cerrado, the killifish hobby values careful record-keeping of collection origins — maintaining the purity of individual locality strains preserves both the genetic integrity of wild-type lineages and the scientific value of captive populations. Mixing different strains is generally discouraged within the specialist killifish community.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Melanorivulus pictus as Least Concern in November 2018 (ICMBio, the Brazilian conservation agency), reflecting the species' presence across several sites within the upper Rio Paraná system and the absence of evidence of rapid population decline. The assessment is consistent with its occurrence in a biome where some gallery-stream habitats remain intact, especially within federal territory around Brasília and Distrito Federal where land-use pressure has been partially regulated.

However, the conservation picture for members of the M. pictus species group as a whole is more precarious than any single assessment conveys. The Pensoft ZooKeys work on the group explicitly flags high endemism and vulnerable habitats in the Cerrado as demanding conservation attention. The Cerrado has lost more than half of its original extent to agriculture — primarily soy cultivation and cattle ranching — and gallery-forest strips along watercourses are frequently cleared for irrigation or cattle access, degrading or eliminating the very microhabitats M. pictus depends on. Stream channelisation, sedimentation from erosion on deforested slopes, and increasing water abstraction for agriculture are additional pressures documented across Cerrado catchments.

The M. pictus species group's 18 species represent a remarkable radiation within a single threatened biome, and several species in the group with narrower ranges are likely to face higher extinction risk than their Least Concern congener. Maintaining protected gallery-forest corridors along Cerrado streams — and the legal forest-protection provisions of Brazil's Forest Code, which mandate riparian buffer zones — are the primary conservation levers for this and related small rivulines.
