Taxonomy & naming
Melanorivulus zygonectes was described by the American ichthyologist Henry Weed Fowler in 1914, with the type locality recorded as Cana Brava (Canbrava) in the rio Tocantins basin, Goiás state, Brazil. The original description placed the fish in a different genus, and the authority is therefore given in parentheses to reflect the subsequent transfer. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes recognises the valid combination as Melanorivulus zygonectes (Fowler, 1914), placing it within the large South American rivuline genus Melanorivulus.
Melanorivulus is a neotropical genus within the family Rivulidae, the South American annual and non-annual killifishes. Unlike many of its relatives in the genus, M. zygonectes inhabits permanent water rather than seasonal pools, making it a non-annual species that does not undergo embryonic diapause. The genus name Melanorivulus combines the Greek melanos (black) with the Latin rivulus (small stream or brook), a reference to the small, often shaded watercourses typical of its members' habitats. The specific epithet zygonectes derives from the Greek zygon (yoke, pair) and nektēs (swimmer), a naming convention also seen in the North American genus Fundulus and echoing the paired or companion-style swimming display seen in some killifishes.
The American Killifish Association records 23 articles referencing this species in the Journal of the American Killifish Association dating back to 1964, reflecting the species' long history in organised killifish husbandry.
Morphology
Melanorivulus zygonectes reaches a maximum of 1.5 in standard length (SL), placing it firmly in the dwarf-killifish size class. The body is slender and cylindrical, typical of non-annual rivulines adapted to moving water and vegetation-rich microhabitats. Meristic counts from It Rains Fishes give dorsal ray count of 9, anal ray count of 14, and lateral-line scale count averaging 36; the pre-dorsal length is approximately 77% of SL and body depth approximately 19% of SL.
Colouration follows the general pattern of the South American rivulines: males display iridescent metallic flanks with a pattern of scales edged to produce a reticulated or net-like effect, while females are plainer and brownish. Eggs are amber-coloured and approximately 0.5 in in diameter, visually distinctive when deposited on spawning mops. Sexual dimorphism is moderate — males are more intensely coloured and slightly smaller-bodied than females of equivalent age, the female becoming noticeably fuller-bellied when carrying eggs.
Habitat
This species is native to the central Brazilian cerrado, the vast tropical savannah biome covering much of the interior plateau. Its confirmed range spans the Araguaia, Tocantins, Xingu, and Tapajós river basins — four of the major southward- and northward-draining systems of the Brazilian Shield — with 21 documented collection localities spread across the states of Goiás, Mato Grosso, and Tocantins.
The type locality, Cana Brava on the rio Tocantins drainage, is characteristic of its preferred microhabitat: clear to lightly stained gallery-forest streams and savannah pools associated with permanent water. Unlike the ephemeral seasonal pools exploited by annual killies of the cerrado, M. zygonectes selects habitat where water persists year-round, and its non-annual life history reflects that ecological commitment. It Rains Fishes describes the species as occurring in open savannah as well as forested stream margins, tolerating a range of conditions from clear to blackwater.
Water temperature in the cerrado varies seasonally but not with the extreme swings of the seasonal pools; temperature, pH, and hardness data for this specific species are not well-published beyond the general cerrado envelope.
Feeding
Like other small rivulines, Melanorivulus zygonectes is an opportunistic micro-predator in the wild, feeding on small invertebrates, aquatic insects, and zooplankton in the stream and pool margins it inhabits. No specific dietary studies have been published for this species.
In the aquarium the fish accepts live and frozen small invertebrates readily — Artemia nauplii and adult brine shrimp, Daphnia, small bloodworm, and Tubifex. Dry foods are taken once the fish is established. Its small size means all foods should be appropriately scaled; live foods in particular promote good condition and reliable spawning behaviour.
Mating
Melanorivulus zygonectes is a non-annual killifish and a plant spawner. Pairs or trios spawn continuously over an extended period rather than in a single seasonal burst; the mechanism is mop or fine-leaved plant spawning in which the pair swim side by side and deposit individual adhesive eggs among floating or submerged spawning mops, plant roots, or fine-leaved vegetation near the surface or at mid-water.
Spawning is prolific under good conditions — It Rains Fishes documents output of five to fifteen eggs per pair per day, each egg approximately 0.5 in in diameter and amber in colour. Males display to females with fin-spreading and lateral presentation; pairs can be kept together continuously, though aggressive encounters between males require attention if multiple males are housed in a small tank. The continuous-spawning mode means that egg collection can proceed on a rolling basis across days or weeks, unlike the single-clutch strategy of annual species.
Breeding
Eggs deposited on spawning mops should be picked daily and transferred to small, shallow incubation containers with a thin layer of water at the same temperature as the breeding tank. At typical tropical room temperatures (72–79 °F), incubation takes approximately 14 days, at the end of which fully formed fry hatch and are immediately free-swimming. The fry are small but robust and accept Artemia nauplii from first feeding.
It Rains Fishes advises that fry reach sexual maturity in four to five months and that adults can live up to 2.5 years in captivity — a comparatively long lifespan for a killifish of this size, consistent with its non-annual lifestyle. Small breeding tanks of around 2.5 US gal work well for pairs or trios; the species is described as easy to breed and a good introduction to the rivuline group for new killifish keepers. One important behavioural note: separated pairs reintroduced after an interval may show increased aggression; maintaining stable social groupings from the outset reduces this risk. A secure, tight-fitting lid is essential — M. zygonectes is a strong jumper.
In the aquarium
Melanorivulus zygonectes has been maintained in killifish collections since the mid-twentieth century and is considered an undemanding and rewarding species. It is best housed in a species or near-species tank: a small, well-planted aquarium of 5.5–10 US gal with a secure lid, gentle filtration (a sponge filter is ideal), and floating spawning mops or fine-leaved plants such as Java moss provides everything it needs.
The fish tolerates the range of water conditions found across its broad cerrado native range and is not demanding about pH or hardness within the tropical freshwater envelope. Temperature of 72–79 °F suits it well. Because it is a small, peaceful killifish, companions must be chosen with care — only species of similar size and temperament that will not compete aggressively for the surface zone where most spawning activity occurs. The American Killifish Association has maintained interest in the species since the 1960s, and club networks remain a reliable source of captive-bred stock; wild-caught individuals are occasionally available through specialist importers working the Brazilian cerrado region.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Melanorivulus zygonectes as Least Concern (LC), most recently evaluated in 2022 by assessors at the Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio). The species is distributed across four major river basins in central Brazil and is recorded from at least 21 collection localities, giving it a geographic footprint broad enough to avoid the single-locality vulnerability that makes many rivulines conservation priorities.
Nonetheless, the cerrado biome that sustains it is under severe pressure. It is one of the most threatened major biomes in South America, with large areas converted to soybean monoculture, cattle pasture, and eucalyptus plantation over recent decades. Permanent streams and gallery forests — the specific habitats on which non-annual killies like M. zygonectes depend — are particularly vulnerable to deforestation of riparian buffer zones, alteration of flow regimes through irrigation abstraction, and siltation from agricultural runoff. The species' reliance on permanent water, which spares it from the desiccation tolerance required of annual killies, also means it cannot exploit the temporary seasonal pools that persist after more severe habitat alteration. Continued monitoring of cerrado freshwater habitats and maintenance of gallery-forest corridors along watercourses are the most important conservation actions for this and the many other small endemic fishes of the region.
