Trigonectes rubromarginatus is a small annual killifish from the Araguaia River basin of central Brazil, where it inhabits the shallow seasonal pools of tropical savannas and cerrado floodplains that fill during the wet season and vanish completely in the dry months. Like all members of the genus Trigonectes, it produces drought-resistant diapausing eggs that are buried in the substrate, capable of surviving the annual desiccation of their pool and hatching when the rains return — sometimes after eight months underground. Males are the more striking sex, bearing the caudal red stripe that gives the species its name (rubromarginatus, 'red-margined') alongside scattered yellow spots on the flanks and elongated pelvic fins. Assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN in 2018, the species nevertheless depends on intact cerrado seasonal wetlands, a habitat under severe pressure from agricultural expansion across Brazil's interior.

Taxonomy & naming

Trigonectes rubromarginatus was formally described by Wilson J. E. M. Costa in 1990, in a systematic revision of the neotropical annual fish genus Trigonectes published in Ichthyologische Erforschung Freshwaters (vol. 1, no. 2, pp. 135–150). The authority is therefore presented as (Costa, 1990), with the parentheses indicating that the name has been moved since its original placement. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) and FishBase both record this authorship for the valid binomial.

The genus Trigonectes belongs to the family Rivulidae (sensu lato; alternatively treated within a broader Aplocheilidae by some authors), the South American annual killifishes of the order Cyprinodontiformes. Rivulidae is the most species-rich annual-fish family on the continent and includes some of the most intensely locality-coded fish in the aquarium hobby. Trigonectes is a small genus of neotropical annuals characterised by, among other features, a straight mouth cleft and a suite of fin-ray counts that separate it from the more familiar genera Austrolebias and Nothobranchius.

The species epithet rubromarginatus is a compound Latin adjective: ruber (red) + marginatus (margined, bordered) — referring to the distinctive red stripe running along the ventral margin of the caudal fin in males. This caudal marking is the easiest field character for identification within the genus.

Morphology

Trigonectes rubromarginatus is a compact killifish reaching a maximum total length of approximately 4.5 in (FishBase), though most individuals encountered in the hobby and in wild collections are smaller, and the species would be considered relatively large within the Rivulidae. The body form is typical of annual killies: moderately elongated, slightly compressed laterally, with a broad, flattened head and an upturned mouth suited to surface-feeding. Meristics recorded for the species include 10–14 dorsal soft rays and 16–18 anal soft rays.

Colouration is sexually dimorphic. Males display the defining feature from which the species takes its name: a vivid red stripe along the ventral margin of the caudal fin. The flanks carry small yellow spots on a darker ground colour, giving a speckled appearance. The pelvic fins of males are notably elongated, reaching the base of the 11th to 15th anal rays — a secondary sexual character absent or much reduced in females. The body profile of females is plainer, lacking the caudal red margin and pelvic fin extension, and the flanks are typically more uniform in colouration.

The species is described as benthopelagic — associated with the bottom zone of its shallow-pool habitat — and non-migratory, consistent with the lifestyle of a seasonal-pool annual that lives and dies within a single water body over the course of one wet season.

Habitat

The Araguaia River basin in Brazil's central interior is the recorded native range of Trigonectes rubromarginatus. The Araguaia drains a vast area of the Brazilian Cerrado — the tropical savanna biome of the interior plateau — and its associated floodplains and gallery forests hold numerous seasonal water bodies: roadside pools, savanna depressions, flooded grassland pockets, and oxbow cutoffs that fill rapidly with the summer rains and dry completely during the long dry season.

These habitats are warm, often shallow, and subject to rapid and dramatic temperature and chemistry fluctuations as the water level drops. FishBase records the temperature range as 73–81 °F, consistent with the warm, seasonally heated shallow waters of the cerrado interior. Trigonectes rubromarginatus inhabits the soft bottom of these pools — the mud, peat, and detritus accumulations into which it spawns — and is considered a tropical freshwater species with no tolerance for salinity.

The cerrado is one of the world's most threatened savanna biomes, with estimated losses of 50 percent or more of its original extent due to soy agriculture, cattle ranching, and the expansion of sugarcane for bioethanol production. The seasonal pools and veredas (palm-lined gallery wetlands) that annual killifish depend on are particularly vulnerable to drainage and ground-level disturbance.

Feeding

FishBase assigns Trigonectes rubromarginatus a trophic level of 3.4, placing it in the micropredator and insectivore category — the typical feeding guild of small annual killifish. Wild diet almost certainly consists of small invertebrates, aquatic insects, insect larvae, zooplankton, and other small arthropods available at the surface and in the water column of its seasonal pools. The upturned mouth is suited to intercepting surface prey as well as mid-water items.

In the aquarium, Trigonectes rubromarginatus and other Rivulidae annuals are typically offered live or frozen foods: mosquito larvae (black and white), daphnia, artemia, glassworms, and small chironomid midges. Most individuals adapt readily to high-quality frozen foods; dried foods may be accepted but are less reliable as a primary diet for this family. Keeping the fish well-fed with varied live and frozen invertebrate prey supports vibrant male colouration and good spawning condition.

Mating

Trigonectes rubromarginatus is an annual killifish with a substrate-diving spawning mode — the defining reproductive strategy of the South American annual Rivulidae. In the wild, pairing takes place during the wet season while the pools contain water. Males court females with lateral displays that show off the red caudal margin and the extended pelvic fins to maximum effect, and rival males engage in parallel swimming and fin-spread contests to establish dominance.

When a female is ready to spawn she approaches the substrate alongside the courting male. The pair dive headfirst together into the soft mud or peat at the pool bottom and, briefly buried, release eggs and sperm simultaneously. The fertilised eggs are pressed into the substrate and left there; neither parent provides any further care. This dive-and-bury act may be repeated many times over the course of a spawning session, distributing eggs through several centimetres of sediment. The eggs are highly resistant to desiccation, enclosed in a thick, adhesive chorion that anchors them in the mud and protects them during the dry season.

The elaborate male colouration — caudal stripe, pelvic extensions, spotted flanks — functions almost entirely in this intraspecific mate-choice and male-competition context. Females of this genus show preference for males with more intense or complete expression of the species-typical markings.

Breeding

The eggs of Trigonectes rubromarginatus enter diapause after fertilisation and remain buried in the substrate through the dry season, developing slowly across an extended dormancy period. FishBase records an incubation period of approximately 8 months for this species — among the longer diapause durations recorded in the Rivulidae, reflecting the duration of the dry season in the Araguaia basin. Hatching is triggered by the reinundation of the pool at the start of the following wet season, when fresh rainwater percolates into the substrate and triggers the resumption of embryonic development.

In the aquarium hobby, annuals of this type are maintained on a peat or coir spawning medium. Eggs are collected from the tank bottom at regular intervals, the medium is pressed to remove excess moisture, and the egg-laden peat is stored dry in sealed bags or containers at room temperature (typically 72–79 °F) for the required diapause period. At the end of the storage period the eggs are re-wetted with aged, slightly acidic water to simulate rainfall, and larvae hatch over a period of hours to days. Newly hatched fry are small but active and require appropriately sized first foods — infusoria, paramecia, or commercial fry powder — before advancing to artemia nauplii.

Because wild adults in annual species rarely survive the dry season, aquarium lifespan is short by fish standards; individuals of Trigonectes rubromarginatus and related annuals typically live one to two years in captivity under optimal conditions. Growth is rapid in the first months, consistent with the need to reach reproductive maturity before the wet season ends.

In the aquarium

Trigonectes rubromarginatus is occasionally available through specialist killifish societies and breeders, and is not a mainstream aquarium fish; acquiring it typically means joining a national or regional killifish association and participating in member egg or fish exchanges. This is true of most Rivulidae annuals, whose care requirements — particularly the managed diapause cycle — make them niche fish despite their vivid appearance.

A species or small group tank is recommended: a tank of 15–20 US gal per pair is sufficient given the species' moderate size and the importance of a soft, deep substrate layer (several centimetres of peat or fine-grained inert substrate mixed with peat) for natural spawning behaviour. Water conditions should reflect the warm cerrado origin: temperature 73–81 °F, soft to moderately soft water, slightly acidic pH (around 6.0–6.8 is typically well tolerated); hardness and pH tolerances for this species are not precisely documented so care should be taken not to generalise from hardier annual species. Dense surface cover with floating plants reduces light penetration and mimics the shaded conditions of shallow cerrado pools, and a tight-fitting lid is essential as killies are capable jumpers.

Because of the short adult lifespan, the primary reward for the Trigonectes rubromarginatus keeper is the complete annual cycle: witnessing the spawning dives, managing the egg storage, and raising the next generation — a domestic re-enactment of the fish's wild rhythm of wet-season life and dry-season waiting. The species' size and the vividness of male colouration make it one of the more striking members of the genus for the specialist aquarist.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Trigonectes rubromarginatus as Least Concern in November 2018, based on a distribution range centred on the Araguaia River basin of central Brazil that was judged sufficient to preclude categorisation under the threatened thresholds at that time. The species' high resilience score (FishBase) and the relatively broad extent of the Araguaia system contributed to this assessment.

Nevertheless, the ecological context is concerning. The Brazilian Cerrado — the savanna biome that surrounds and feeds the Araguaia basin and its seasonal pools — is one of the most rapidly deforested biomes on Earth. Industrial soy agriculture, cattle ranching, and sugarcane cultivation have replaced vast areas of native cerrado, and the associated drainage of seasonal wetlands, channelisation of streams, and drawdown of the water table directly destroy the ephemeral pools on which annual killifish depend. Unlike riverine fish that can recolonise from connected waters after a disturbance, annual killies are pool-bound for their adult lives; if a pool is drained and does not refill, an entire local population perishes with no route of recolonisation.

The 2018 Least Concern assessment should therefore be read as a snapshot rather than a clean bill of ecological health. Monitoring the status of cerrado seasonal wetlands and the annual fish communities they support — several of which include range-restricted endemics — is an important task for Brazilian freshwater conservation. Hobbyists who maintain self-sustaining captive populations of Trigonectes rubromarginatus provide a de facto backup against local extirpation events, a role taken seriously within the killifish-keeping community.
