Taxonomy & naming
Neofundulus paraguayensis was described by the American ichthyologist Carl H. Eigenmann in 1907, with the type locality in the Paraguay region of subtropical South America. Because the original description was made under a different generic placement and subsequently moved, the authority is presented in parentheses as (Eigenmann, 1907). Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) records the valid combination as Neofundulus paraguayensis (Eigenmann, 1907).
The genus Neofundulus belongs to the family Rivulidae (South American annual killifishes), a diverse radiation of substrate-spawning annuals and non-annuals distributed across tropical and subtropical South America from Panama to Argentina. Neofundulus is one of the smaller genera in the family, allied to other Chaco and Pampas annual genera. The specific epithet paraguayensis is a Latinised form of 'Paraguay', referring directly to the type locality of the species.
Published literature specifically treating this species is sparse; general Rivulidae systematics and family-level treatments provide the taxonomic framework. The species is not known to have been revised or synonymised since its original description, and the name stands as valid under current Catalog of Fishes treatment.
Morphology
Neofundulus paraguayensis is a slender, moderately compressed killifish reaching approximately 1–1.5 in standard length, placing it firmly in the small-annual category. The body form is typical of substrate-spawning Rivulidae: a slightly arched dorsal profile, a rounded caudal fin, and a terminal to slightly superior mouth suited to taking small prey at or near the surface. Scales are cycloid and moderately large.
Colouration in males follows the pattern common to South American annual killies: the flanks carry iridescent blue-green or turquoise scales with red or orange spotting or banding, producing the jewelled appearance that makes many killies prized among specialist hobbyists. Females are considerably plainer, displaying a muted brownish or olive body with reduced patterning — the pronounced sexual dichromatism is characteristic of the family and reflects strong male-male competition in the brief, intense breeding season of a temporary pool.

Habitat
Neofundulus paraguayensis inhabits seasonal temporary pools and flooded grassland depressions within the subtropical Chaco and adjacent Pampas of Paraguay and surrounding areas of southern South America. These habitats are characterised by extreme seasonal fluctuation: pools fill during the rainy season (typically October to March in the southern hemisphere), may reach considerable extent during peak rains, then contract and fully dry out during the winter dry season.
Water conditions in these seasonal pools reflect the subtropical climate and local geology. FishBase records a temperature range of 64–75 °F for this species — notably cooler than the tropical annual killies of the Amazon basin, consistent with the temperate to subtropical latitude of Paraguay. The water is soft and moderately acidic (pH approximately 5.5–6.8, general hardness 2–6 °dH), accumulating tannins and humic acids from decaying vegetation as pool levels recede. Dissolved oxygen can fluctuate widely as pools shrink, selecting for fish capable of exploiting the surface layer.
The substrate of these pools is typically soft mud, clay, or organic detritus — the material into which adults bury their eggs during spawning. As the pool dries, the surface layer cracks and hardens, but eggs buried at depth retain sufficient moisture to survive diapause until the next rains.
Feeding
In the wild, Neofundulus paraguayensis feeds as a generalist micro-predator, taking small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, copepods, ostracods, small worms, and other zooplankton that proliferate rapidly in newly flooded seasonal pools. The surface-oriented mouth is consistent with predation near the water surface where small prey concentrate during the brief productive season.
In the aquarium, annual killies of this type are readily fed on live or frozen Artemia nauplii, daphnia, micro-worms, and similar small invertebrate foods. Dry foods are generally accepted after conditioning. Given the species' small adult size, food items should be appropriately scaled; large or coarse foods are refused. The rapid growth rate typical of annual species favours feeding multiple small meals per day, particularly for juveniles being raised from hatched eggs.
Mating
Neofundulus paraguayensis is an annual substrate-spawning killifish. Males are territorial and compete aggressively for access to females during the compressed breeding window of the rainy season. A dominant male courts a receptive female with lateral displays, fanning his fins to show colouration; the pair then descend together to the pool bottom where spawning occurs.
Fertilisation is internal to the substrate: the pair press side by side and partially dive into soft mud or detritus, depositing a small number of eggs (typically one to a few per dive) at depth with each spawning embrace. The eggs are coated with a sticky outer layer that anchors them within the substrate. This process is repeated over many sessions, distributing eggs throughout the bottom material of the pool. Males of annual killies have intense, brief reproductive lives calibrated to the pool's duration; female fecundity over a season can be substantial relative to body size.
Breeding
The reproductive strategy of Neofundulus paraguayensis is built entirely around obligate egg diapause — the defining feature of annual killies. After eggs are deposited in the substrate, development proceeds through an early phase, then arrests at one or more diapause stages (DI, DII, or DIII in Rivulidae terminology) in which the embryo enters a state of metabolic suspension. When the pool dries, the adults die, but the buried eggs survive in the damp substrate through weeks or months of drought, protected by their specialised extraembryonic membranes.
Hatching is triggered by re-wetting — when rainfall refills the pool, the embryos complete development and emerge as fully formed juveniles within hours or days. Growth in annual killies is exceptionally fast; fish reach sexual maturity within weeks of hatching and must complete their entire life cycle before the pool dries again.
In the hobby, annual killifish like Neofundulus paraguayensis are spawned on a peat or coir substrate placed in the aquarium. Breeders remove the substrate, allow it to partially dry (keeping it just damp enough to prevent desiccation of the eggs), and store it in a sealed bag or container for 8–12 weeks. Re-wetting the peat in a shallow container of aged water triggers hatching. Fry are immediately free-swimming and can take newly hatched Artemia nauplii as a first food. Multiple diapause periods are possible and some hobbyists rest eggs through two cycles to improve hatch rates.
In the aquarium
Neofundulus paraguayensis is a specialist species suited to experienced killifish keepers familiar with the annual peat-spawning method. It is not a community fish in the conventional sense: its small size, its requirement for the seasonal dry-storage cycle, and its short lifespan (typically under one year in the wild; somewhat longer in stable aquarium conditions) make it an enthusiast's species rather than a general hobbyist choice.
A small aquarium of 10–15 US gal is adequate for a pair or small group, lightly planted or furnished with live moss and dried leaf litter to simulate the subtropical pool environment. Water parameters should target the species' natural range: temperature 64–75 °F, pH 5.5–6.8, very soft to moderately soft water. The temperate temperature requirement is notable — this is a subtropical species that does not need, and may be stressed by, the higher temperatures typically maintained for tropical fish.
A layer of soft peat or coconut coir at the aquarium bottom serves as both spawning medium and decor. The top should be covered to prevent jumping, common in all killies. The fish are best kept as a pair or trio (one male to one or two females); multiple males in a small space will fight. The rewarding aspect of annual killifish keeping is the complete life-cycle management — spawning, drying, storing, hatching — which gives keepers an unusually direct engagement with the biology of an extreme life-history strategy.
Conservation
Neofundulus paraguayensis has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List; it carries a status of Not Evaluated (NE). The absence of an assessment does not imply security: many annual killifishes of the subtropical Pampas and Chaco are highly sensitive to habitat change because they depend on intact seasonal pool systems — hydroperiod, pool connectivity, and the soft substrate necessary for egg burial must all be preserved for a viable population to persist.
The subtropical lowlands of Paraguay and adjacent Argentina and Bolivia have experienced significant agricultural transformation in recent decades, particularly the conversion of native grasslands and palm savannas to soy and cattle production. This conversion drains, fills, or hydrologically modifies the seasonal pools that annual killies depend on. Pesticide and fertiliser runoff can alter the soft-water chemistry of remnant pools. These pressures, combined with the naturally patchy and disjunct distribution of seasonal pool complexes, mean that populations of specialist annual species may be more vulnerable than large-scale distribution maps suggest.
Formally assessed IUCN data for this species would help prioritise survey effort and determine whether populations are stable, fragmented, or declining. In the meantime, maintenance of native grassland hydrology and the avoidance of pool drainage in the Chaco–Pampas transition zone are the conservation measures most likely to benefit Neofundulus paraguayensis and the broader annual killifish community it belongs to.
