Neofundulus parvipinnis is a small annual killifish endemic to the northern Pantanal of central Brazil, where it inhabits the shallow seasonal pools of the Cuiabá and São Lourenço river drainages within the Paraguay River basin. First described from a roadside pool west of Cuiabá, it belongs to the genus Neofundulus — a group of South American annuals whose entire life cycle is tied to the rhythm of the wet and dry seasons. The adults die when their pools evaporate; the drought-resistant eggs lie buried in the mud through the dry season in diapause, hatching only when rains refill the depression weeks or months later. The IUCN Red List assesses the species as Least Concern, though its dependence on intact seasonal floodplain habitats in one of the world's most threatened wetland systems warrants continued attention.

Taxonomy & naming

Neofundulus parvipinnis was originally described by G. S. Myers in 1927. The species is placed in the genus Neofundulus within the family Rivulidae (South American annual killifishes), as recognised by Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes. Wilson J. E. M. Costa's 2015 revision of the genus, published in Vertebrate Zoology (65: 15–25), confirmed the species as endemic to the Cuiabá and São Lourenço river drainages in the northern Pantanal, treating this as a distinct lineage within the Paraguay River basin fauna.

The parenthetical placement of Myers in the authority notation — (Myers, 1927) — reflects the convention that the original genus-species combination has been altered since the initial description. The genus Neofundulus was established to accommodate a set of South American annuals distinguishable from related genera by a suite of meristic and morphometric characters. Within the genus, N. parvipinnis is characterised by relatively small dorsal and anal fins compared to its congeners — the feature encoded directly in the specific epithet.

The American Killifish Association classifies the species under Class 3: South American Annuals, grouping it with the peat-spawning annual killies of the Pantanal, Cerrado, and adjacent lowlands.

Morphology

Neofundulus parvipinnis reaches a maximum recorded length of 2.5 in total length (FishBase; itrainsfishes.net), making it a small-to-moderate member of its genus. The species is named for its proportionally shorter dorsal and anal fins relative to other Neofundulus, a distinction noted in Costa's (1988) original analysis of meristic data. Average scale counts from that same analysis give: dorsal-fin rays 12.3, anal-fin rays 15.6, and lateral-line scale count 35.3.

Like other rivulid annuals, the body is streamlined and laterally compressed, with males typically displaying bolder colouration than females. In the genus Neofundulus, males often show patterned flanks with scale-edge pigmentation producing a reticulate or spotted effect, and the fins may carry colour markings; females are generally plainer and somewhat smaller. Specific colour descriptions for this species are sparse in the available literature, reflecting the relatively limited attention the species has received compared to more commonly kept South American annuals.

Habitat

The type locality of Neofundulus parvipinnis is a pool along the BR-364 highway approximately 22 mi west of Cuiabá, Mato Grosso, Brasil — a shallow, seasonally flooded depression in the landscape characteristic of the northern Pantanal. Documented collection localities include Posto São Luis, Cuiabá, and Joselândia in Mato Grosso, all within the Cuiabá and São Lourenço river drainages that drain into the Paraguay River basin.

The Pantanal is the world's largest tropical wetland, undergoing an annual inundation cycle driven by rainfall over the surrounding plateaus. Neofundulus parvipinnis occupies the ephemeral pools and shallow depressions within this system — water bodies that fill during the wet season (roughly November to March) and dry completely or shrink to remnant puddles during the dry season (approximately May to September). These pools typically have soft, muddy substrates rich in organic detritus — the medium in which the eggs are deposited and spend the dry season. Water temperatures in such environments track ambient air temperature closely, ranging approximately 72–79 °F during the active season (FishBase).

Feeding

Like other members of Neofundulus, N. parvipinnis is a generalist predator of small invertebrates, feeding opportunistically on whatever fauna the seasonal pool provides: aquatic insect larvae, microcrustaceans, worms, and small terrestrial invertebrates that fall onto the water surface. The species' short life cycle in annual pools selects for rapid growth and efficient resource use, and wild fish are likely not highly selective feeders.

In captivity the species accepts live and frozen foods readily — Artemia nauplii and adults, Daphnia, chironomid larvae (bloodworm), and small waxworms. Dried and pelleted foods may be accepted once the fish is settled. As with most rivulid annuals, a varied diet based predominantly on live or frozen invertebrate protein maintains condition and supports spawning activity.

Mating

Neofundulus parvipinnis is an annual killifish: its reproductive strategy is entirely structured around the ephemeral nature of its habitat. Males court females actively, using the body posturing and fin displays typical of rivulid annuals. The mating act is a brief, close-contact embrace in which both fish dive together into the soft substrate — mud, peat, or detritus on the pool floor — and release a small number of eggs (commonly one to a few per dive) that are buried at the point of spawning.

The eggs are immediately embedded in the substrate at the moment of release, rather than laid on plants or scattered freely in the water column. This substrate-diving behaviour, shared across the genus Neofundulus and many other South American annuals, physically deposits the embryos in the medium that will protect them through the coming dry season. In the aquarium, pairs spawn readily into a deep layer of peat fibre or coconut coir on the tank floor, replicating the natural substrate.

Breeding

After spawning, the eggs of Neofundulus parvipinnis undergo diapause — a state of arrested embryonic development that allows the embryo to survive complete desiccation of the substrate for months at a time. The itrainsfishes.net profile records an incubation period of 3–8 months or longer under storage conditions, consistent with FishBase's note of approximately 5 months incubation. During this period the eggs can be kept dry (or very slightly moist) in sealed bags or containers of peat, stored at moderate room temperature. Hatching is triggered by re-wetting the peat, which simulates the return of seasonal rains.

In the hobby, the standard technique is to spawn the pair over a peat substrate for several weeks, then remove the peat, gently squeeze out excess moisture, place it in a sealed plastic bag labelled with the storage date, and store for the appropriate diapause period before wetting to hatch. Fry of annual killies are typically large and robust at hatching relative to most egg-scattering species, and can often take Artemia nauplii as a first food from day one. Growth is rapid; annual species are adapted to reach sexual maturity quickly within a single wet season.

In the aquarium

Neofundulus parvipinnis is maintained primarily by specialists within the killifish hobby. A small species aquarium of 10–15 US gal is sufficient for a trio (one male, two females) or a pair. The tank should have a soft, deep substrate of peat fibre or coconut coir at least 2–3 in deep for spawning; a lid is advisable as killies are capable jumpers. Filtration should be gentle — sponge filters are ideal — and lighting can be subdued. Floating plants provide cover and reduce stress.

Water chemistry should reflect the warm, soft-to-moderate conditions of the Pantanal seasonal pools: a temperature of 72–79 °F, with slightly soft to moderately hard water and near-neutral pH is appropriate. Males may spar but serious injury between well-matched adults is uncommon if cover is provided. As with all annual killies, the hobbyist must be prepared to manage the egg storage and hatching cycle — keeping this species is as much about managing the eggs through their dry period as caring for the adults. Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Neofundulus parvipinnis as Least Concern in 2018, attributed to Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio) (2022). The species' range is confined to the Cuiabá and São Lourenço drainages within the northern Pantanal — a restricted distribution centred on one of the most ecologically sensitive regions in South America.

The Pantanal faces growing threats from agricultural expansion (particularly soy cultivation and cattle ranching on the surrounding Cerrado and Mato Grosso plateau), upstream damming and water diversion affecting seasonal flood dynamics, and the increasing frequency and intensity of droughts linked to regional deforestation and climate change. Annual killies like N. parvipinnis are particularly vulnerable to habitat alteration because their populations exist only as buried eggs during the dry season: any disturbance that destroys the substrate of a seasonal pool — drainage, deep tillage, surface fires burning into pond margins — can eliminate an entire local population before adults have a chance to recolonise. Continued monitoring of Pantanal seasonal pool habitats is important to ensure the Least Concern assessment remains valid.
