Nimbapanchax viridis is a small, non-annual killifish endemic to the forest-edged brooks and headwater streams of the upper Guinea highlands, where its range straddles the Liberia–Guinea border across the Loffa, St. Paul, St. John, and Nipoué river drainages. Males are clothed in greenish-brown along the back, fading to a pale green on the flanks — the colouration that gave the species its name. Unlike the soil-burying annual killifishes with which it is often grouped in the popular imagination, this species inhabits water that persists through the dry season and reproduces by depositing adhesive eggs on fine-leaved plants, making it a fundamentally different animal in biology and husbandry. The IUCN assessed it as Near Threatened in 2020, citing ongoing loss of the forested catchments on which its narrow range depends.

Taxonomy & naming

Nimbapanchax viridis was described by Werner Ladiges and Ernst Roloff in 1973, with the type locality recorded as near Salayio, close to the border with Guinea in northwestern Liberia. The type specimen is held in the Zoologisches Museum Hamburg. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (California Academy of Sciences) lists the valid combination as Nimbapanchax viridis (Ladiges & Roloff, 1973), the parentheses indicating that the name has been moved from the genus in which it was originally placed. The species belongs to the family Nothobranchiidae, the African rivulines — a speciose and biogeographically coherent group of egg-laying cyprinodontiform fishes confined to sub-Saharan Africa.

The genus Nimbapanchax was established to receive several small killifishes from the upper Guinea region, taking its name from Mount Nimba, the highland massif at the tripoint of Liberia, Guinea, and Côte d'Ivoire that serves as the biogeographic heart of this part of West Africa. The genus sits within the broader nothobranchiid radiation and is characterised by its non-annual life history — a trait shared with its congeners but setting the group apart from the annual Fundulopanchax and Aphyosemion species with which it may be confused in the hobby.

Morphology

Nimbapanchax viridis reaches a maximum total length of approximately 3 in, with males typically slightly larger and more colourful than females. The body form is slender and moderately compressed, typical of forest-stream killifishes that inhabit still to gently flowing water. The fins are rounded, and the dorsal fin sits well back on the body, positioned over or just ahead of the anal fin — a classic nothobranchiid layout.

Males display greenish-brown dorsal colouration, transitioning to pale green on the lower flanks and belly — the coloration reflected directly in the species epithet. Flanks may show iridescent scale patterning under appropriate lighting. Females are plainer, predominantly brownish, and somewhat more robust in the body when gravid. The modest sexual dimorphism is consistent with other members of the genus.

Habitat

The species inhabits brooks and small streams set within forested savanna mosaic at the margins of the upper Guinea highland forests. Its documented drainage range includes the upper portions of the Loffa, St. Paul, St. John, and Nipoué rivers in eastern upper Guinea (the highland zone straddling Liberia and Guinea). The type locality near Salayio, northwestern Liberia, lies close to the Guinea border, anchoring the core of the known range.

These headwater systems are characterised by soft, acidic water — tannin-stained from leaf litter and forest detritus, with low conductivity and relatively stable, cool temperatures year-round. FishBase records a temperature range of 68–75 °F for this species, consistent with the highland provenance. The streams are generally shallow, with a substrate of leaf litter, root tangles, and submerged vegetation that provides both spawning substrate and cover. Unlike lowland seasonal pools exploited by annual killifishes, the headwater streams in this region maintain flow through the dry season, allowing a non-annual life strategy.

Feeding

Nimbapanchax viridis is a micropredator in the wild, foraging on small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans, and similar prey — that are abundant in the leaf-litter and root zones of highland forest streams. This feeding guild is typical across the non-annual African killifishes of the nothobranchiid family.

In the aquarium the species accepts live and frozen small foods readily: Daphnia, Artemia nauplii and adults, bloodworm (chironomid larvae), and similar invertebrate foods. Dry foods may be taken after acclimatisation but live and frozen items should form the dietary staple to maintain condition and colouration.

Mating

As a non-annual plant-spawner, Nimbapanchax viridis reproduces in a fundamentally different manner from the soil-burying annual killifishes. Pairs court in the water column or near submerged vegetation, and the male displays his colouration to the female during a close-following courtship. There is no explosive, season-compressed urgency of the annual life cycle; instead, spawning extends over days or weeks, with small numbers of eggs deposited in each session.

Eggs are adhesive and are pressed individually onto fine-leaved plants, fibrous roots, or spawning mops near the substrate or water surface. The male wraps around the female briefly at each oviposition event — a contact embrace typical of the group — before the fertilised egg adheres to the chosen surface. Both sexes can be kept together year-round without the dry-season dormancy that annual species require, and repeated small spawns characterise the breeding output of healthy adults.

Breeding

Eggs of Nimbapanchax viridis incubate in water and do not require the peat-burial diapause of annual species. Incubation at 72–75 °F takes approximately two to three weeks, after which fry hatch as free-swimming, fully formed miniatures capable of immediately taking appropriately sized live foods. There is no extended larval period of the kind seen in some larger species.

In practice, aquarium keepers remove eggs from spawning mops or plants and transfer them to shallow hatching containers with gentle aeration, where fungused eggs can be removed before they contaminate viable ones. First foods for fry are microworms, vinegar eels, or freshly hatched Artemia nauplii; the fry are small at hatch but grow at a steady rate on a varied live-food diet. FishBase describes the species as difficult to maintain in the aquarium, likely reflecting a sensitivity to water quality or the specific soft-acid chemistry of its native highland streams rather than unusual husbandry complexity per se.

In the aquarium

Nimbapanchax viridis is an uncommon aquarium subject, more likely to be encountered in the collections of dedicated killifish enthusiasts than in the general trade. It is a small, peaceful fish suited to a species tank or a quiet community with other similarly sized, non-aggressive fish that share its water-chemistry requirements.

The species demands soft, acidic water in line with its headwater forest origin — the 68–75 °F temperature range documented for the natural habitat should be respected, and pH should be kept on the acidic side of neutral. Heavy planting, floating vegetation, and a substrate of dark sand or leaf litter will both settle the fish and encourage natural behaviour. FishBase flags the species as difficult to maintain, and the most common failure mode in soft-water killifishes is exposure to hard or alkaline tap water without adequate RO dilution or conditioning. A tight-fitting lid is advisable, as with all killifishes.

The species' relative rarity in the hobby means that sourcing breeding stock can be a challenge; the killifish specialist societies (American Killifish Association and its European counterparts) are the most reliable channels for obtaining captive-bred fish.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Nimbapanchax viridis as Near Threatened (NT) in April 2020, under criteria B1ab(iii)+2ab(iii). The B-criterion assessment reflects a restricted extent of occurrence and area of occupancy combined with ongoing decline in the quality of the species' habitat — specifically the forested catchments of the upper Guinea highlands that regulate the hydrology and chemistry of the highland streams it inhabits. Deforestation for agriculture and charcoal production across the Liberia–Guinea border region has accelerated in recent decades, degrading both riparian cover and water quality in the headwater drainages the species depends on.

The species is not regulated under CITES. Its narrow endemic range — a cluster of highland river headwaters spanning a comparatively small geographic footprint in one of the world's biodiversity hotspots — makes it inherently vulnerable to localised habitat change. The upper Guinea forest region has experienced substantial forest loss over the past half-century, and the remaining forest patches in this area are under continued pressure. Maintaining representation of Nimbapanchax viridis in responsible captive populations within killifish enthusiast networks provides a low-cost insurance against local extirpation events while the species' wild population status and trend are better characterised.
