Nimbapanchax jeanpoli is a small, non-annual killifish endemic to the upper Mano River drainage on the border of northern Liberia and eastern Guinea — a region centred on the forested slopes and savanna brooks that drain the Mount Nimba highlands. Described by Berkenkamp and Etzel in 1979, it belongs to the genus Nimbapanchax, which Sonnenberg and Busch erected in 2009 to accommodate a cluster of West African aplocheiloids formerly assigned to Roloffia and Aphyosemion. Unlike the diapausing annual killifish with which it shares its broader family, N. jeanpoli inhabits permanent forest streams and reproduces by scattering adhesive eggs on vegetation — a mode that suits the year-round persistence of its home waters. The species is assessed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, its small range and declining forested savanna habitat placing it among the more conservation-sensitive members of an already threatened genus.

Taxonomy & naming

Nimbapanchax jeanpoli was first described by H. O. Berkenkamp and V. Etzel in 1979 on the basis of material from the upper Mano River system in West Africa; the authority is rendered in parentheses because the species has since been moved from its original generic placement. For many years the species circulated in the literature and hobby under the genus Roloffia (sometimes spelled Roloffia) alongside other West African non-annual aplocheiloids, before being reassigned to Aphyosemion by various authors.

In 2009 Sonnenberg and Busch described the genus Nimbapanchax to receive a geographically coherent group of species distributed around the Mount Nimba massif and the drainage systems that radiate from it — the upper Mano, Cavally, Sassandra, and adjacent rivers spanning southeastern Guinea, northern Liberia, and western Ivory Coast. The genus name combines Nimba (the mountain and region) with Panchax, a former catch-all name derived from Aplocheilus panchax that was historically applied to many Old World killifish. The Zenodo-hosted description of the genus (Sonnenberg & Busch, 2009) treats N. jeanpoli alongside N. leucopterygius, N. melanopterygius, N. petersi, and N. viridis; the latter is the only member whose range extends east to the coastal plain of Ivory Coast and southwestern Ghana, while the remaining species are more tightly bound to the Nimba watershed. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats Nimbapanchax jeanpoli (Berkenkamp & Etzel, 1979) as the valid combination.

The specific epithet jeanpoli honours Jean-Pol Vandersmissen, a Belgian aquarist who collected or contributed material from the type locality, following a long tradition in killifish taxonomy of naming new species after the hobbyists and collectors who first bring them to scientific attention.

Morphology

Nimbapanchax jeanpoli is a slender, moderately compressed killifish reaching approximately 2 in total length (FishBase), with a common size of around 2 in TL; males tend to be slightly larger and more richly coloured than females. The body plan is typical of the genus: fusiform, with a slightly dorsally flattened head, a terminal mouth angled slightly upward, and fins set well back on the body. Sonnenberg and Busch record dorsal fin counts of 8–14 rays and anal fin counts of 13–18 rays across Nimbapanchax, with vertebral counts of 27–30 — both distinctly lower than the related genus Archiaphyosemion (vertebrae 30–31), a character that helps diagnose the group.

Males are the more conspicuous sex. Ground colouration is brown to reddish-brown, with metallic blue to blue-green iridescence on the flanks and unpaired fins; fin margins may carry contrasting bands of colour. Females are considerably plainer — brownish or buff with reduced iridescence and less coloured fins — and are more rounded in the body, particularly when gravid. Sexual dimorphism is thus marked, as is standard in aplocheiloid killifish, and allows straightforward sexing of adults.

Habitat

The species occurs in brooks and small streams threading through forested savanna in the upper Mano River drainage, which straddles the border between northern Liberia and eastern Guinea. This corner of West Africa falls within the influence of the Mount Nimba highlands — a region of exceptional biodiversity, including the UNESCO-listed Nimba Strict Nature Reserve — where streams descend through a mosaic of gallery forest and open savanna before joining larger river systems flowing to the Atlantic.

FishBase characterises the habitat as brooks in forested savanna, and the species is listed as non-seasonal — that is, its home waters persist year-round as permanent or near-permanent streams rather than ephemeral pools that dry completely in the dry season. This is consistent with the non-annual reproductive strategy of the genus. The water in such systems is typically soft and mildly acidic, filtered through leaf litter and forest soils, with FishBase recording a pH range of 6.5–7.2 and temperatures of 72–82 °F. Water colour is likely amber or tannin-stained in the heavily forested sections of the catchment.

Feeding

Like most small killifish, Nimbapanchax jeanpoli is a micro-predator in the wild, feeding on invertebrates available at or near the water surface and in the upper water column. Small insects, mosquito larvae, aquatic microcrustaceans, and worms are the probable staples in its forest-stream habitat, where the canopy limits algal productivity but delivers a steady rain of terrestrial invertebrates onto the water surface.

FishBase records a trophic level of 3.2 for the species, consistent with a diet centred on invertebrates rather than fish. In the aquarium, the species accepts live and frozen foods readily — Artemia nauplii, Daphnia, Cyclops, mosquito larvae, and small bloodworm are all appropriate — and may be trained onto high-quality micro-pellets, though live and frozen items should form the majority of the diet to maintain condition and support breeding readiness.

Mating

Nimbapanchax jeanpoli is a non-annual plant-spawner: the pair deposit adhesive eggs on fine-leaved aquatic plants, roots, or spawning mops over an extended period rather than burying a seasonal clutch in mud. This mode is the defining characteristic of the genus and reflects the permanent-water habitat that the species occupies — there is no dry-season desiccation to drive the evolution of diapausing eggs.

Courting males display their full lateral iridescence to females, spreading their fins and circling with characteristic killifish lateral posturing. When a female accepts a male, the pair press together among vegetation or mop fibres and deposit a small number of eggs — typically just one to a few per embrace — which the female anchors to the substrate with a short, sticky filament. The pair separate and repeat the process over days or weeks, producing eggs in small daily batches rather than a single mass spawning event.

Breeding

Eggs of Nimbapanchax jeanpoli incubate in water attached to plant material or spawning mop fibres; there is no diapause and no peat-moss desiccation stage. Incubation typically runs two to three weeks at the species' preferred temperature range of 72–82 °F, after which fully formed fry emerge already capable of taking small live food.

Breeders remove eggs by hand from the mop or plants every few days and incubate them in small containers of shallow, clean water, or leave a densely planted separate tank for fry to develop in without adult predation. Fry accept Artemia nauplii, micro-worms, and Paramecium from first feeding. FishBase notes that the species is difficult to maintain in the aquarium (Huber, 1996), implying sensitivity to water quality and possibly to the collection of captive-bred bloodlines relative to wild fish; high water quality and appropriate diet are correspondingly important for sustained breeding success. Growth rate is moderate and the fish are non-annual, so they are comparatively long-lived by killifish standards.

In the aquarium

Nimbapanchax jeanpoli is an uncommon species in the hobby, attracting dedicated killifish enthusiasts but rarely appearing in general trade. FishBase notes commercial interest and flags the species as difficult to maintain, a characterisation consistent with the tendency of West African forest killifish to be sensitive to poor water quality and dietary shortfalls. The species is best kept in a species-only or genus-level setup.

A small aquarium of 10–15 US gal suits a pair or a small group (one male to two or more females). Dense planting with fine-leaved species — Java fern, hornwort, or floating plants — provides cover for females, reduces male harassment, and gives the pair the surface and mid-water vegetation needed for spawning. Water should be soft, slightly acidic to neutral (pH 6.5–7.0), and held at 72–79 °F; the upper end of the temperature tolerance may be tolerated but is best avoided for long-term maintenance. Regular partial water changes and efficient biological filtration are important. The tank should be kept tightly covered, as killifish are accomplished jumpers.

The fish are peaceful with each other and with similarly sized, non-predatory tankmates, though a species-only approach simplifies breeding management. Regular feeding with live and frozen invertebrate foods maintains breeding condition and the vibrant colouration of males.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Nimbapanchax jeanpoli as Vulnerable (VU) in April 2020, applying criteria B1ab(i,ii,iii)+2ab(i,ii,iii) — the standard range-restriction and habitat-decline criteria. Both extent of occurrence and area of occupancy are small, centred on the upper Mano River drainage in a geographically limited area straddling Liberia and Guinea, and the assessment documents continuing declines in extent of occurrence, area of occupancy, and habitat quality.

The pressures on forest-savanna streams in this region are substantial. Deforestation for agricultural clearance, artisanal mining (the Mount Nimba foothills hold significant iron ore deposits), and the expansion of human settlements all reduce canopy cover, increase sedimentation, and alter the hydrology of the small streams on which this and the other Nimbapanchax species depend. The introduction of invasive mosquitofish (Gambusia spp.) into West African freshwater systems has harmed native killifish populations in similar habitats elsewhere, and broader land-use change across Liberia and Guinea continues to shrink and fragment the gallery forest that sustains permanent water flow in otherwise seasonal landscapes.

The Mount Nimba Strict Nature Reserve (a UNESCO World Heritage Site spanning Guinea, Liberia, and Ivory Coast) offers some protection to the core of the genus's range, but enforcement is difficult and the reserve boundaries do not cover the full extent of the drainage. Nimbapanchax jeanpoli's narrow endemic range, sensitivity to habitat degradation, and apparent rarity in captive collections make it a species of genuine conservation concern, and its continued presence in specialist killifish collections contributes to insurance against further range contraction in the wild.
