Pituna xinguensis is a tiny annual killifish — males reaching barely 1 in standard length — known from ephemeral pools in and around the rio Xingu basin of Brazilian Amazonia. Its type locality, Ilha do Arapujá near Altamira, was permanently inundated by the Belo Monte Dam reservoir in 2015, making that founding population extinct in the wild. Subsequent field surveys in 2023 documented surviving populations in seasonal pools further downstream near São Félix do Xingu, but the species' overall status remains precarious and it is assessed as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List. All fish in the hobby today are descended from captive-bred stock; wild material collected before the dam's closure underpins that lineage.

Taxonomy & naming

Pituna xinguensis was described by Wilson J. E. M. Costa and Gilberto Brasil in 1990. The authority is presented in parentheses following standard ichthyological convention, indicating that the species has been transferred from the genus under which it was originally placed. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & van der Laan) recognises Pituna xinguensis (Costa & Brasil, 1990) as the valid combination. The genus Pituna is a small South American annual killifish genus placed within the family Rivulidae (order Cyprinodontiformes), a group of egg-burying annuals that have radiated across the seasonal savannas, gallery forests, and floodplain grasslands of tropical South America.

The genus name Pituna derives from the Tupi word meaning 'black', a reference to the dark colouration of the type species. The specific epithet xinguensis records the species' occurrence in the rio Xingu drainage — a standard Latinate toponym meaning 'of the Xingu'. FishBase notes both elements of the etymology explicitly.

No subspecies or recognised geographic variants are currently described. The discovery of a second surviving population near São Félix do Xingu, several hundred kilometres downstream from the type locality, raises the possibility of morphological or genetic divergence between the two populations, but no formal revision addressing this question has been published.

Morphology

Pituna xinguensis is a miniature killifish: FishBase records a maximum size of 1 in standard length for males and 1 in SL for females, placing it firmly among the smallest of the South American annual killifishes. The body plan is typical for the tribe — elongated, laterally compressed, with rounded finnage and a terminal, upturned mouth suited to surface and near-surface feeding on small invertebrates.

As in most rivulid annuals, the sexes differ conspicuously in colour. Males display the vivid pattern characteristic of the genus: a dark, often blackish base overlaid with metallic blue, green, or turquoise iridescence on the flanks, with contrasting fin markings. Females are cryptically coloured — brownish or greyish, with reduced or absent iridescence — an anti-predator adaptation for the exposed, shallow pools the species inhabits. The caudal fin in males may carry extensions or pointed rays. Precise colour descriptions for live specimens can vary with condition, age, and population origin.

Habitat

The natural habitat of Pituna xinguensis is the ephemeral, shallow pool systems associated with the rio Xingu catchment in Brazilian Amazonia. The type locality is a temporary swamp on Ilha do Arapujá, a large Xingu island near Altamira in the state of Pará; a second confirmed population has been documented in seasonal pools near São Félix do Xingu, several hundred kilometres to the south. These pools are warm, nutrient-poor, and acidic — characteristic of the flooded forest-margin and savanna seasonal wetlands of Amazonian lowlands.

The pools are filled by wet-season rains (broadly October–April) and dry out progressively through the dry season (May–September). At their peak, the water is shallow and turbid, with a soft mud and detritus substrate that accumulates organic matter from surrounding vegetation. Associated fauna documented from the CE Fish Essentials account of the species includes juvenile serrasalmid fish, small characins (Moenkhausia, Thayeria), juvenile Hoplias malabaricus, tadpoles, and freshwater crabs — a community characteristic of these temporary lowland pools.

The Belo Monte Dam, completed and filled from 2015 onward, permanently flooded Ilha do Arapujá and destroyed the type-locality habitat. The surviving São Félix do Xingu population occupies pools that remain subject to ongoing deforestation pressure in southern Pará.

Feeding

In the wild, Pituna xinguensis is presumed to feed primarily on small invertebrates at or near the water surface and in the water column — a feeding strategy typical of small rivulid annuals, whose upturned mouths are adapted for taking insects, microcrustaceans, and other arthropods that fall onto or inhabit shallow seasonal pools. The species shares its habitat with small characins and tadpoles, suggesting competition for zooplankton and aquatic invertebrates.

In captivity, small live and frozen foods are the accepted standard: micro-worms, Artemia nauplii, Daphnia, Moina, and similar fine fare suit the diminutive gape. Dry foods can be accepted by some individuals but live and frozen foods produce better condition and colouration. Overfeeding in a small aquarium deteriorates water quality rapidly and should be avoided.

Mating

Pituna xinguensis is an annual killifish with a substrate-spawning reproductive strategy. Mating is initiated by the male, who courts the female through lateral displays that expose the full extent of his iridescent flank colouration. Courtship in annual rivulids typically involves the male positioning himself alongside and slightly above the female, quivering and pressing her toward the substrate. When the female is receptive, both fish dive together into the soft substrate — mud, peat, or detritus — where a single egg is deposited and fertilised in the sediment with each dive.

The pair repeat the diving embrace multiple times during a spawning session, producing a small number of eggs per session but spawning repeatedly across the wet season. Eggs are large relative to adult body size, with a tough, resistant chorion adapted to withstand the mechanical stress of burial and the physiological stress of desiccation over the dry season.

Breeding

As a true annual killifish, the breeding biology of Pituna xinguensis is governed by the cycle of the seasonal pool. Eggs are buried in the substrate in the wet season and remain there as the pool dries. During the dry season the eggs pass through diapause — a state of arrested embryonic development in which metabolic activity is greatly reduced — enabling survival in dry or semi-dry sediment for weeks to months. When the rains return and the pool refills, eggs resume development and hatch within days.

In the aquarium, the annual reproductive mode is replicated using a peat or coconut-coir spawning medium. A small container of moist peat is placed in the breeding tank; the pair dive and spawn in the medium over several sessions. The peat is then removed, gently squeezed to reduce moisture without fully drying it, sealed in a plastic bag, and stored at room temperature (approximately 75–79 °F) for an incubation period typically recommended at 8–12 weeks — though the correct period for Pituna xinguensis specifically is not widely documented and hobbyists often experiment. At the end of the storage period, the peat is placed in a shallow dish and flooded with slightly soft, slightly acidic water; hatching occurs within hours to a day or two. Fry are small but typically large enough to take Artemia nauplii immediately. Water quality must be maintained carefully, as fry in shallow hatching containers are vulnerable to ammonia spikes. Adult fish are short-lived: in the wild, fish die as the pool dries; in captivity, most individuals live no longer than 12–18 months even under good conditions.

In the aquarium

Pituna xinguensis is a specialist fish suited to experienced killifish keepers rather than general community aquarists. Its very small adult size (under 1 in SL) makes it unsuitable for any tank containing fish large enough to consume it; it is best kept in a species setup or with other small, peaceful annual killifishes of similar size and requirements.

A small, well-covered aquarium of 5.5–10 US gal is adequate for a pair or small group. The water should be soft and slightly acidic, warm (approximately 75–81 °F), and kept clean with gentle filtration — a sponge filter is ideal, as it provides biological filtration without current strong enough to disturb the fish or its spawning substrate. Floating plants and a layer of peat or dark substrate help reduce light intensity and bring fish into better colour. A tight-fitting lid is essential: killies are accomplished jumpers.

All hobby specimens available today are captive-bred, as wild collection is no longer possible from the type locality. The captive population is maintained by a network of killifish society members — particularly within the American Killifish Association (AKA) — who exchange eggs through the AKA's annual egg-exchange programme. Maintaining genetic diversity within this captive lineage is an ongoing concern given the small founding population and the confirmed extinction of the type-locality wild population.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Pituna xinguensis as Near Threatened (NT), with the assessment reflecting the species' extremely restricted range and the documented destruction of its type locality. The filling of the Belo Monte Dam reservoir from 2015 permanently inundated Ilha do Arapujá and extirpated the founding wild population of the species. This event is one of the most concrete examples of a dam project directly driving the local extinction of an endemic freshwater fish in Amazonia.

Field surveys conducted by the Ictioxingu project in 2023 confirmed that populations persist in ephemeral pools near São Félix do Xingu, providing a measure of reassurance that the species is not yet globally extinct in the wild. However, southern Pará is subject to intense deforestation pressure associated with agricultural expansion, particularly cattle ranching and soybean cultivation, which directly threatens the seasonal pool habitats on which the species depends. Deforestation of surrounding catchment forest alters hydrology, sedimentation rates, and water chemistry of the small pools in ways that can degrade or destroy them even without complete drainage.

The captive population maintained within killifish societies — particularly the AKA — represents an important insurance population. Given that wild reintroduction to the original type locality is now impossible, any future conservation effort must focus on protecting the surviving São Félix do Xingu populations and the broader landscape of seasonal pool habitats in that part of the Xingu basin.
