Pituna schindleri was described by Jean H. Huber in 1991 and is placed in the family Rivulidae (New World killifishes) within the order Cyprinodontiformes. The genus Pituna was erected to accommodate a small group of South American annual killifishes from northeastern Brazil and neighbouring regions; Pituna schindleri is among the species that define the genus' distribution in the semi-arid northeast of the country.
The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, Fricke & van der Laan) recognises Pituna schindleri (Huber, 1991) as the valid combination, with the authority in parentheses reflecting the standard practice of moving a species from its original generic placement. Pituna is nested within the broader radiation of annual South American killifishes that includes genera such as Simpsonichthys and Hypsolebias, a group whose taxonomy has been subject to sustained revision — a 2007 landmark revision of the related genus Simpsonichthys by Costa documents the phylogenetic context in which Pituna species are resolved.
Morphology
Pituna schindleri is a small, slender-bodied killifish. FishBase records a maximum standard length of 1.5 in for males and 2 in for females — the reverse of the usual male-larger pattern seen in many fish groups, though the difference is slight. The body form is typical of the rivulid annuals: laterally compressed, with a pointed snout, upturned mouth suited to surface feeding, and a rounded caudal fin.
Sexual dichromatism is pronounced, as in most Pituna and the broader Rivulidae. Habitat
