Taxonomy & naming
Pronothobranchius gambiensis was described by the Swedish ichthyologist Johan Gustaf Svensson in 1933, with the type locality situated in the Gambia region of West Africa — the geographic origin encoded in the specific epithet gambiensis, a Latinised toponym meaning 'of the Gambia'. The authority is written in parentheses, signalling that the species has been moved from the original genus under which Svensson described it into the current genus Pronothobranchius. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer and Fong) records the valid combination as Pronothobranchius gambiensis (Svensson, 1933).
The genus Pronothobranchius is a small West and Central African genus of annual killifishes within the family Nothobranchiidae — the African annual killifishes — and sits phylogenetically close to Nothobranchius, the larger and better-known East and southern African annual killi genus. Pronothobranchius is distinguished from Nothobranchius primarily by osteological and scale-pattern characters and by its restriction to the Sahel and savanna zone of West and West-Central Africa rather than the eastern rift and coastal systems. Hobby documentation of the genus lags considerably behind Nothobranchius; P. gambiensis receives relatively little attention in Western killifish circles compared to the more colourful East African annual species, but its biology is representative of the Sahelian annual killi life strategy.
Morphology
Pronothobranchius gambiensis is a small fish; FishBase records a maximum standard length of approximately 2 in, consistent with the broader pattern of the genus and with hobbyist reports placing adult size in the 1.5–2 in range. It is a compact, laterally somewhat compressed annual killifish with the relatively deep body and rounded finnage typical of nothobranchiid annuals. The head is blunt, the mouth terminal and slightly upturned — adapted to surface and mid-water opportunistic feeding in shallow, turbid seasonal pools.
Sexual dimorphism is pronounced, as is characteristic of the family. Males are more intensely coloured than females, displaying iridescent body colouration and patterned finnage used in courtship and male–male rivalry; females are typically brownish and cryptically marked, a common pattern in annual killifishes where females must survive long enough to complete multiple spawning dives into substrate. Detailed colour descriptions from wild-caught material are sparse in the available literature; hobbyists maintaining the species report the males as attractively marked relative to the drab appearance of females, but Pronothobranchius as a genus is less gaudy than many East African Nothobranchius.
Habitat
Pronothobranchius gambiensis occupies temporary, seasonal pools and shallow depressions in the Sudano-Sahelian savanna zone of West Africa, with the type locality in the Gambia–Senegal region and the species' range extending through the seasonal-pool habitats of this biogeographic zone. These pools are rain-fed, filling during the West African monsoon season (roughly June to October) and drying completely during the long dry season that follows. The substrate is typically fine mud or peat-rich detritus that retains moisture for a period after surface water disappears — it is in this substrate that the eggs of annual killies must persist in diapause.
Water chemistry in these Sahelian savanna pools is generally soft and slightly acidic to near-neutral, warmed by the tropical sun, often turbid with suspended fine particles and rich in dissolved organic matter from leaf litter and decaying vegetation. Temperature in the wet season typically falls in the range of 75–82 °F. The pools are isolated; their fish communities consist almost entirely of small, fast-maturing species capable of colonising rapidly when water arrives and completing reproduction before desiccation.
Feeding
Like other annual killifishes of the Sahelian and savanna zone, Pronothobranchius gambiensis is an opportunistic carnivore in the wild, feeding primarily on small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, microcrustaceans, worms, and zooplankton — that bloom in the temporary pools alongside the fish following the onset of rains. The short season selects for fast growth and rapid energy conversion, so feeding is essentially continuous during the wet phase of the cycle.
In captivity the species accepts the standard live and frozen foods used for annual killifishes: Daphnia, Artemia nauplii and adults, bloodworm (Chironomus larvae), Tubifex, and small waxworms. Small, nutritious meaty foods fed frequently support the fast growth rate required to reach sexual maturity within weeks of hatching — a biological imperative for a fish whose wild season may last as little as two or three months.
Mating
Pronothobranchius gambiensis is a substrate-diving annual killifish; like all members of the Nothobranchiidae, courtship and egg deposition take place entirely in and around the sediment layer of the pool bottom rather than among plants or in open water. Males court females with lateral displays of colour and fin extension, establishing a brief dominance hierarchy in a small, shallow pool. Pair formation is transient: a receptive female is approached and driven by the male toward the substrate.
At the moment of spawning the pair dive together into the soft mud or peat, burying themselves briefly and simultaneously releasing a single egg and sperm at depth in the substrate. This dive-and-deposit behaviour may be repeated many times during a courtship session, distributing eggs through a wide area of sediment. In aquarium conditions males must be managed to prevent excessive harassment of females; rotating females between tanks or using dividers is standard practice among killifish keepers maintaining annual species.
Breeding
The defining biological feature of Pronothobranchius gambiensis — and the property that has made African annual killifishes a subject of scientific study on ageing and embryo dormancy — is the capacity of its embryos to enter diapause: a state of arrested development that can persist for months through complete pool desiccation. Eggs buried in the substrate as the dry season advances enter one or more diapause stages regulated by temperature and maternal factors (as documented in research on related African annual genera); this suspended animation protects the next generation through a period in which the parents and all free-living aquatic organisms have died.
When seasonal rains refill the pool — which may occur six to nine months after spawning — the eggs sense the drop in temperature and the change in light and rehydration conditions and recommence development, hatching en masse within days. In the aquarium, hobbyists replicate this cycle by spawning the fish onto peat or coconut-coir substrate, removing the spent medium with collected eggs after a few weeks of spawning, gently drying it to approximately 50–60% moisture (not bone-dry), sealing it in a plastic bag or sealed container, and storing it at room temperature for a minimum of roughly six to eight weeks — though three months or more often improves hatch synchrony. Re-wetting with aged, slightly acidic, soft water triggers hatching; fry are large enough to take Artemia nauplii as a first food. Growth is fast, with sexually mature fish in as little as five to six weeks post-hatch under good conditions. Wild fish live less than one year.
In the aquarium
Pronothobranchius gambiensis is an infrequently kept species in the killifish hobby compared to popular East African annuals such as Nothobranchius rachovii or N. eggersi, and dedicated breeders maintain it primarily through killifish society networks rather than the general aquarium trade. For keepers already experienced with African annual killifishes, its care requirements are well within the standard approach: a small, well-covered aquarium of 10–15 US gal with soft, slightly acidic to neutral water at 75–82 °F, a spawning substrate of peat or coconut coir either loose on the bottom or in a shallow container, and a diet of live and frozen invertebrates.
A tight-fitting lid is essential; all killies are jumpers and annual species can be especially erratic when startled. Water quality should be maintained with regular partial changes, but filtration should produce minimal current — these are fish of still, shallow pools. Keeping one male with two or three females reduces harassment; males may fight in close quarters. Because the species completes its life cycle in under a year in the wild, captive fish kept warm will age quickly; many keepers maintain overlapping generations from eggs to ensure continuity. The species has no significant presence in mainstream retail, but eggs and adult fish can occasionally be obtained through the American Killifish Association (AKA), European Killifish Association (EKA), and their affiliated clubs' fish and egg distribution programmes.
Conservation
Pronothobranchius gambiensis has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List; no conservation status category has been assigned. This absence of assessment is common among small-range African annual killifishes — many species are known from only one or a handful of temporary pool localities in poorly surveyed regions, and the resources for systematic assessment have not reached most of the genus.
The biological vulnerability of annual killies to habitat loss is nonetheless real and in some cases acute. Temporary pool habitats across the Sahel and Sudanian savanna zone face multiple converging pressures: agricultural conversion that drains or fills seasonal pools; water abstraction for irrigation and livestock that prevents pools from filling adequately; introduction of exotic species (particularly mosquitofish, Gambusia affinis, deployed for malaria vector control across the region) that predate on eggs and fry and compete with native killies for invertebrate food; and longer-term shifts in West African monsoon patterns driven by climate change. Any species with a restricted range of temporary-pool habitats in this zone is inherently sensitive to local extinction at occupied sites, with recolonisation unlikely in a degraded landscape. A formal IUCN assessment, supported by current-distribution field surveys, would be a worthwhile investment for the genus Pronothobranchius as a whole.
