Taxonomy & naming
Pronothobranchius kiyawensis was described by the German ichthyologist Ernst Ahl in 1928, with the type locality in what is now northern Nigeria — the Kiyawa region of Kano State, which gives the species its name. The genus Pronothobranchius sits within the family Nothobranchiidae (African annual killifishes), and the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises kiyawensis as the valid name under the combination Pronothobranchius kiyawensis Ahl, 1928.
Pronothobranchius is a small genus of Sahelian and sub-Sahelian annual killifish distributed across the Sudan–Sahel zone from Senegal to the Lake Chad basin, distinguishable from the better-known genus Nothobranchius by their more northerly, arid distribution and certain meristic characters. Diagnostic features of kiyawensis males include 30 to 50 iridescent dots arranged along the flanks, a proximal stripe on the anal fin, pelvic fins reaching the genital papillae, and a dorsal fin tip that extends to the caudal fin; dorsal fin rays number 13 to 16, anal rays 15 to 17, and lateral scale count is 27 to 29 (FishBase). The species has not undergone a formal post-Ahl revision, and the population genetics of the Chad basin populations remain poorly characterised.
Morphology
Pronothobranchius kiyawensis is a small, moderately robust killifish. FishBase records a maximum standard length of 1.5 in for males and 2 in for females — the latter being notably larger, which is unusual in annual killifish where males typically outsize females. The body is laterally compressed and relatively deep for the genus, tapering to a rounded caudal fin that is smaller and less elaborate than the fan-shaped tails of many Nothobranchius.
Sexual dimorphism follows the pattern typical of African annual killifish: males are vividly coloured, with the 30 to 50 iridescent lateral dots providing the species' most striking ornamental character. The anal fin carries a proximal stripe and the pelvic fins reach the genital papillae. Females are considerably plainer — typically olive-brown to grey-buff — and rounder-bodied when gravid. Both sexes develop the relatively deep, rounded body profile characteristic of Pronothobranchius compared with the more slender Aphyosemion-type annual killifish of West African forest zones.
Habitat
Pronothobranchius kiyawensis inhabits temporary pools, shallow swamps, and seasonal floodplains within the Lake Chad drainage basin, ranging across northern Nigeria, Chad, and the Central African Republic (FishBase). This is Sahelian and sub-Sahelian savanna terrain — a semi-arid belt receiving concentrated rainfall over a short wet season before returning to months of dry conditions. The water bodies kiyawensis occupies are by definition ephemeral: they exist for weeks to months following the rains, then evaporate or drain entirely, leaving behind a baked or cracked substrate that retains the buried eggs until the next cycle.
Water temperatures in these pools track the tropical Sahelian climate; FishBase records a range of 72–79 °F. The pools are typically soft, low in dissolved solids, and often turbid with suspended silt or organic material washed in by seasonal runoff. The vegetation fringe — grasses, sedges, and marginal shrubs — provides the organic substrate that accumulates as detritus on the pool floor, forming the peat-like layer in which eggs are deposited. Deeper permanent waters are largely irrelevant to this species; its entire ecology is predicated on the temporary pool cycle and the hard dry season in between.
Feeding
Like most annual killifish of African savanna zones, Pronothobranchius kiyawensis is a carnivore that exploits the seasonal flush of invertebrate life accompanying the rains. The ephemeral pools that characterise its habitat rapidly bloom with zooplankton, insect larvae, small crustaceans, and aquatic worms following inundation, and the fish's compressed life cycle is timed to exploit this transient food abundance. Feeding is opportunistic and driven by the need to attain sexual maturity within weeks of hatching.
In the aquarium, kiyawensis and related Pronothobranchius species accept small live and frozen invertebrates readily — Daphnia, Artemia nauplii, bloodworm (chironomid larvae), and tubifex. Dry foods may be taken but should not be the sole diet for these small, metabolically active fish. Frequent small feedings suit the fast-paced lifestyle of annual killifish better than large infrequent meals.
Mating
Pronothobranchius kiyawensis is an annual, substrate-spawning killifish — the defining reproductive guild of the Nothobranchiidae. Courtship is initiated by the male, which displays his lateral iridescent dots and anal fin stripe to the female in lateral passes. When the female is receptive, the pair align side by side; the male curves his body around the female and drives downward, pressing the pair into the soft substrate — peat, mud, or detritus — where eggs and milt are released simultaneously and the eggs are pushed into the substrate by the spawning dive.
This mode of reproduction is fundamentally different from plant-spawning killifish such as Aphyosemion, where eggs are deposited on roots or vegetation. The substrate-spawning pair may spawn repeatedly over days or weeks during the rainy season, depositing a small number of eggs per dive. In the wild, males establish territories and defend spawning areas from rival males; female choice is mediated by male colour intensity and display vigour.
Breeding
After eggs are deposited in the soft substrate, embryonic development begins and then arrests at one of several defined diapause stages — an adaptation evolved specifically to survive the dry season (documented extensively in Nothobranchius and Pronothobranchius; Reichard, PMC7739477; ResearchGate publication 276268352). The eggs can remain viable in dried substrate for months, withstanding the complete desiccation of their environment. When rains return and the pool refills, the diapause is broken and hatching proceeds rapidly, often within days of re-wetting.
The captive husbandry protocol used by killifish specialists mirrors this cycle. Pairs are spawned over a layer of peat or coir fibre in a small container; after a few weeks the peat is gently squeezed semi-dry and stored in a sealed plastic bag at room temperature for an incubation period of six to eight weeks or longer — exact timing varies by population and husbandry experience. The bag is then re-wetted with soft, slightly acidic water to trigger hatching. Fry hatch in synchrony and are extremely small; first foods must be correspondingly minute — freshly hatched Artemia nauplii, micro-worms, or commercial fry powder. Growth is fast, and fish may reach sexual maturity in as little as four to six weeks, reflecting the urgency of their natural life cycle. Wild fish rarely survive their first dry season; captive individuals may live somewhat longer under stable conditions, but lifespan remains short compared with non-annual species.
In the aquarium
Pronothobranchius kiyawensis is an uncommon species in the hobby — specialist killifish enthusiasts and members of organisations such as the American Killifish Association and Killifish Association International are the most likely source of eggs or fish. Its care follows the standard protocol for African annual killifish: a small, covered aquarium (5.5–10 US gal is adequate) with a dark substrate, floating plants or surface cover to reduce light intensity and stress, and very soft, slightly acidic water at 72–79 °F. Gentle filtration is preferable; the natural habitat is still or very slow-moving.
The key requirement distinguishing annual killifish from all other aquarium fish is the peat or coir substrate for spawning. Without a suitable medium for egg deposition, breeding cannot proceed. Dedicated spawning containers — small boxes filled with boiled peat — are placed in the tank and checked regularly; accumulated peat with eggs is removed, gently pressed, bagged, and stored for the diapause period. This wet-dry-wet cycling is not difficult once mastered but requires advance planning that differentiates Pronothobranchius from the casual community fish trade.
Because P. kiyawensis is Endangered and occurs in a region where wild populations face growing pressure, hobbyists maintaining this species are advised to keep careful records, exchange fish with other breeders to maintain genetic diversity, and avoid allowing the captive population to become a closed line. The killifish hobby's tradition of peat-egg exchange by post or at club auctions is the informal but effective mechanism by which rare annual killifish are kept from disappearing in captivity.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Pronothobranchius kiyawensis as Endangered (EN) in September 2019 under criteria B2ab(ii,iii), indicating a restricted area of occupancy combined with continuing decline in the quality and extent of its habitat (EOL; FishBase). The Lake Chad basin — the sole known range of this species — is one of the most ecologically stressed large lake systems on Earth. Lake Chad itself has contracted dramatically over recent decades under the combined pressure of reduced rainfall associated with climate variability, large-scale irrigation withdrawals for agriculture, and population growth across the four bordering nations.
For a species whose entire life cycle depends on the reliable annual flooding and drying of shallow temporary pools, even modest changes in precipitation timing, intensity, or the hydrology of the basin's seasonal wetlands are potentially catastrophic. If pools fail to flood in a given year, the generation hatched from the substrate may find no water; if dry seasons lengthen or become more variable, egg viability during diapause may be exceeded. Additional threats include habitat conversion of seasonal floodplains to agriculture, water extraction for livestock and human use, and the suite of pressures — deforestation, soil erosion, invasive species — that affect freshwater biodiversity across the Sahel.
Pronothobranchius kiyawensis is not widely kept in the hobby, and captive stocks are sparse and potentially genetically narrow. Coordinated conservation breeding programmes comparable to those organised for rarer Nothobranchius species do not currently exist for this species. Given the species' single-basin endemism and Endangered status, maintaining viable captive populations in the killifish hobby represents a meaningful conservation contribution alongside any future in-situ habitat work in the Chad basin.
