Taxonomy & naming
Rhexipanchax nimbaensis was described by Jacques Daget in 1948 from material collected in the Nimba highlands, an isolated mountain range straddling the borders of Guinea, Liberia, and Côte d'Ivoire. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (California Academy of Sciences) records the valid combination as Rhexipanchax nimbaensis (Daget, 1948), placing the species in the family Procatopodidae — the African lampeyes, a group of small, non-annual killifishes distributed across sub-Saharan Africa.
The genus Rhexipanchax is one of several genera within Procatopodidae that share the characteristic iridescent light-organ patch above the eye from which the group takes its common name. The species has at times appeared in older literature under synonyms or been assigned to broader genus concepts; the current placement in Rhexipanchax reflects the modern reclassification of procatopodid genera based on morphological and molecular data. The American Killifish Association lists it under its Class 14 category (all other Old World killifishes).
Morphology
Rhexipanchax nimbaensis is a small, slender killifish. FishBase records a maximum total length of 2 in in males; females are somewhat smaller, reaching approximately 1.5 in TL. The body is moderately elongate and laterally compressed, typical of the procatopodid lampeyes. Dorsal fin ray counts are 9–13 and anal fin ray counts 15–19, reflecting the posteriorly placed dorsal fin common to the group.
The most striking feature is the iridescent eye-patch — a luminous blue-green reflective organ positioned above the pupil — which gives the lampeyes their group name and is visible even in dim light. General body colouration is silvery to pale yellowish-green with an iridescent sheen on the flanks. Males tend to be more intensely coloured than females, showing stronger iridescence in the body and finnage, a dimorphism that intensifies when males are in good condition and displaying to conspecifics.
Habitat
This species is known from small rivers, swamps, and forest brooks in the mountainous interior of the Nimba massif — a range of highland peaks reaching above 1,2461 ft that forms a biogeographic island of cooler, well-watered habitat within the surrounding West African lowlands. The core range spans southeastern Guinea and northern Liberia, with the species probably also occurring in immediately adjacent western Côte d'Ivoire where the same massif extends.
FishBase records water parameters of pH 6.5–7.2 and temperatures of 70–75 °F — noticeably cooler than many West African killifish habitats, reflecting the montane elevation. The streams it inhabits are generally clear and well-oxygenated, fed by highland rainfall and flowing through forest and open areas on the mountain slopes. The species is benthopelagic in habit, occupying the mid-water and lower water-column zones of these small watercourses and their associated swampy margins.
Feeding
Like the majority of lampeyes, Rhexipanchax nimbaensis is a micro-predator feeding on small invertebrates in the water column and at the surface. In nature the diet consists primarily of tiny aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates — small crustaceans, insect larvae, and surface-fallen insects — supplemented opportunistically with algae and other organic matter.
In the aquarium, the species accepts a range of small live and frozen foods including Artemia nauplii, Daphnia, Moina, and chironomid (bloodworm) larvae. Dry foods of appropriate small particle size are also taken once the fish are settled, but a diet based primarily on live or frozen invertebrates brings out the best colouration and condition. Feeding in small amounts multiple times daily is preferable to single large meals.
Mating
The Nimba lampeye is a non-annual killifish, meaning it inhabits permanent waters and lacks the diapause-capable eggs of annual species. Like other procatopodid lampeyes, it is a continuous, plant-associated egg-layer rather than a soil-spawner. Spawning pairs or small groups deposit relatively small numbers of adhesive eggs at each spawning event, attaching them among fine-leaved vegetation, moss, or root tangles, and continuing to spawn repeatedly over an extended period.
Males display to females and to rival males using flared fins and intensified colouration, with the iridescent eye-patch and body sheen playing a role in intraspecific signalling. Keeping a group of at least ten individuals — as recommended by Garnelio — allows natural social dynamics and distributes male aggression across multiple individuals, reducing stress on any single female. A small species tank or breeding aquarium with dense planting provides the conditions under which courtship and spawning proceed most naturally.
Breeding
Breeding Rhexipanchax nimbaensis follows the procatopodid pattern: spawning takes place continuously in small batches rather than as a single mass event. Eggs are adhesive and are deposited among fine plants or roots, where they incubate for approximately 10–14 days at typical aquarium temperatures. Garnelio notes that the eggs are light-sensitive, and a darkened breeding aquarium or heavily shaded spawning area is recommended to protect developing embryos.
The recommended breeding temperature is 77–82 °F, slightly warmer than the wild habitat of 70–75 °F — a common aquarium-husbandry adjustment that accelerates development while remaining within the species' tolerance. Because the adults will consume eggs and small fry if given the opportunity, spawning mops or fine-leaved plants should be checked regularly and eggs or fry transferred to a separate rearing vessel. Newly hatched fry are small and require infusoria or very fine commercial fry foods before graduating to Artemia nauplii as they grow.
In the aquarium
The Nimba lampeye is a rewarding schooling fish for the specialist killifish keeper or the hobbyist seeking a small, peaceful West African species. A group of ten or more individuals — as recommended by Garnelio — allows the fish to display natural schooling behaviour and reduces the tension that can develop between males in smaller groups. The aquarium should be well-planted with fine-leaved vegetation to provide cover and spawning sites, with a dark substrate and subdued lighting that shows the iridescent eye-patches to best effect.
Water parameters should reflect the cooler montane origin of the species: a temperature of 70–79 °F suits the species well, and pH in the range of 6.5–7.2 matches wild conditions. Good filtration maintaining water quality is important, as small lampeyes are sensitive to accumulated waste, but flow rate should be gentle to replicate the quiet streams and swampy habitats the species occupies in nature. The Nimba lampeye is non-aggressive toward other species of similar size and makes a suitable tankmate for other small, peaceful West African fishes.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Rhexipanchax nimbaensis as Vulnerable (VU), with the assessment published on 16 November 2019. The species qualifies for this status primarily because of its extremely restricted range, which is largely confined to the Nimba massif — a mountain block of limited area shared between Guinea, Liberia, and Côte d'Ivoire.
Mount Nimba was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is recognised as a biodiversity hotspot, but it faces significant anthropogenic pressure. Iron-ore extraction has been conducted on the massif and remains a long-term economic interest for all three countries. Deforestation on the slopes, conversion of lowland forest to agriculture, and human population growth in the region all contribute to habitat degradation and reduction of the small streams and swamps the species depends on. The species' montane specialisation means it cannot easily shift its range downslope into warmer lowland waters, compounding its vulnerability to habitat loss within its narrow elevational band. Conservation of the Nimba highlands' hydrological integrity is essential to this species' continued survival.
