Scriptaphyosemion cauveti was first described by Jacques Daget and Andrée Arnoult in 1965 from material collected near Kindia in what is now the Republic of Guinea; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid combination as Scriptaphyosemion cauveti (Daget & Arnoult, 1965). The authority appears in parentheses because the species was originally placed in a different genus before being transferred to Scriptaphyosemion, a genus erected to accommodate a group of West African killifishes that are closely allied to but distinct from the Aphyosemion core clade.
The genus Scriptaphyosemion currently contains roughly a dozen recognised species distributed across the highland and pre-montane streams of Sierra Leone, Guinea, and adjacent portions of Liberia — a zone of high endemism among forest-stream killifishes. Within this assemblage S. cauveti occupies the northern Guinea plateau foothills, with the upper Santa drainage at the heart of its confirmed range. The species is flanked geographically by S. geryi to the west and S. guignardi to the east, and the boundaries between these ranges were characterised by work at the type locality near Kindia — 5 mi along the road from Kindia toward Télimélé — as well as at collecting sites in the Siramousaya drainage.
Hobbyist literature and aquarium records sometimes reference this species under older synonymic combinations or under informal strain names keyed to collection locality; the Catalog of Fishes treatment is the current standard, and S. cauveti (Daget & Arnoult, 1965) is the accepted valid name.
Morphology
Scriptaphyosemion cauveti is a small, slender killifish reaching approximately 1–1.5 in standard length under aquarium conditions, though field collections near the type locality have yielded specimens approaching 3 in — suggesting that aquarium-reared fish may plateau somewhat below the wild maximum, or that populations differ in adult size. The body plan is the elongate, slightly laterally compressed profile typical of the genus, with the dorsal fin set well back toward the caudal peduncle and the mouth positioned at the very tip of the snout, angled slightly upward in the manner of a surface and mid-water ambush predator.
Coloration in males is vivid and patterned: the body base is typically an intense blue-green to turquoise, overlaid with red or brick-red spotting or reticulation across the flanks and onto the unpaired fins. The caudal fin is often strongly patterned with a combination of red rays and a pale or yellow-orange margin, and the dorsal and anal fins carry red and blue elements that vary somewhat between collection strains. Females are cryptically coloured — brownish to olive with reduced or absent fin patterning — following the strong sexual dimorphism characteristic of the group. The modest body size and brilliant male coloration make S. cauveti one of the more ornamentally rewarding species in the genus.
Habitat
In the wild, Scriptaphyosemion cauveti inhabits small forest and forest-edge streams on the foothills and lower slopes of the Guinea Highlands, within the upper Santa drainage system. Field observations at the type locality — a stream some 5 mi east of Kindia on the road toward Télimélé — found warm water at roughly 82 °F, consistent with the shaded but equatorial character of the habitat. The natural setting is soft water — the Guinea Highlands drain acidic, laterite-rich soils — and the streams are characterised by dense marginal and overhanging vegetation, submerged roots, leaf litter, and patches of fine aquatic plants or algal mats that provide the structure the species uses for spawning. Field notes from the aka.org literature record that few mature individuals were collected at the type locality; the samples were dominated by juveniles, suggesting that adults may use more cryptic microhabitats within the stream or are simply less easily captured than younger fish.
Feeding
Like all Scriptaphyosemion species, S. cauveti is a micropredator in the wild, targeting small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, microcrustaceans, worms, and any other invertebrate prey of appropriate size that the upturned mouth and forward-positioned eyes can intercept at or near the water surface and in the mid-water column. The small body size limits prey to correspondingly small items, and the species likely also takes terrestrial insects that fall onto the water surface from the overhanging riparian vegetation characteristic of its habitat.
In the aquarium, S. cauveti accepts a range of live and frozen foods readily. Daphnia, cyclops, bloodworm (frozen or live), and Artemia nauplii or adult brine shrimp are staple foods that maintain condition and coloration in males. Dry foods are accepted by many individuals once acclimatised, but a diet anchored in high-protein live and frozen items produces the best results in terms of health, display, and breeding readiness. Feeding twice daily in small amounts suits the species' metabolic pace at the recommended temperature range.
Mating
Scriptaphyosemion cauveti is a non-annual killifish: it inhabits permanent or near-permanent stream habitats and does not undergo the boom-and-bust lifecycle of the seasonal-pool annual killies. Its reproductive strategy is accordingly different — rather than packing eggs into the substrate to survive a dry season, pairs spawn continuously and persistently over days, weeks, and months, depositing individual adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants, roots, submerged moss, or artificial spawning mops at or near the water surface.
Courtship is initiated by the male, who displays his vivid coloration laterally to the female, swimming alongside or beneath her and spreading his dorsal and caudal fins. The pair move together through spawning medium and the female selects attachment points for individual eggs, which the male fertilises as they are laid. No external structure such as a bubble nest is built. Spawning activity may occur daily over extended periods, making the trio of mop, conditioned pair, and regular egg collection the standard approach in the hobby.
Breeding
Scriptaphyosemion cauveti breeds readily in small aquaria — hobbyist accounts on killi.co.uk confirm successful spawning in tanks as small as 2.5 gallons, and forum records note that pairs will spawn even in community settings, reflecting the species' relatively calm temperament and persistent reproductive drive. Spawning mops of dark wool or nylon are the most commonly used substrate; approximately half of hobbyist reports describe the use of mops alone, while the remainder allow eggs to incubate in water with the adults present for extended periods — reflecting the species' non-annual nature and the absence of egg diapause.
Eggs are adhesive, relatively small, and incubate in water at the tank temperature without any peat-burial or dry-storage phase. Incubation period is temperature-dependent and typically runs 10–18 days in the 68–75 °F range at which most keepers maintain this species. Hatching fry are small but free-swimming and able to take microworm or freshly hatched Artemia nauplii from the first day; infusoria or commercial fry foods can supplement the diet in the first week. Removing eggs from the mop every week or two and transferring them to a small hatching container with a few drops of acriflavine or methylene blue to suppress fungal growth is the standard method, though leaving eggs in situ with the adults also works when predation is low. Scriptaphyosemion cauveti is well suited to the specialist killifish keeper and accessible enough for intermediate hobbyists willing to provide appropriate conditions. A small, well-covered aquarium — 10–15 US gal is ample for a breeding pair or trio — with low flow, dim to moderate lighting, and a generous provision of dark wool or synthetic spawning mops and fine-leaved plants forms the ideal setup. Dark substrate and a few pieces of driftwood or dried leaf litter help replicate the shaded stream aesthetic and reduce stress. Tight-fitting lids are essential; like most killifishes, S. cauveti is an accomplished jumper.
Water temperature of 68–73 °F suits the species for long-term keeping, though it tolerates up to 75–81 °F without apparent harm. The remarkable tolerance of water chemistry documented in hobbyist breeding records — successful spawning across neutral, soft acidic, very soft acidic, and moderately hard alkaline conditions — means the species adapts to a wide range of tap water compositions; moderately soft, slightly acidic to neutral water remains the recommended target. Conspecific and interspecific aggression is relatively mild compared with some killifish; males may spar but serious injury is uncommon in a sufficiently decorated tank. The Kindia and Siramousaya strains are the most available in the hobby and should be kept as separate strains to preserve their distinct identities.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Scriptaphyosemion cauveti as Vulnerable (VU) in 2020, a status that reflects the species' restricted geographic range, its dependence on small forest streams that are directly threatened by habitat degradation, and the broader pressures facing freshwater biodiversity in West Africa. The upper Santa drainage and the Guinea Highlands foothill streams that constitute its known range are subject to deforestation for agriculture and charcoal production, which destabilises stream banks, increases sediment loads, raises water temperatures, and eliminates the riparian vegetation on which the species depends for shade and spawning substrate.
The broader pattern of stream-fish endemism in the Guinea Highlands means that S. cauveti, like many of its congeners, has a naturally small total range from which there is no meaningful dispersal corridor to rescue declining local populations. The species is not currently subject to targeted collection pressure from the aquarium trade at a scale that constitutes an assessed threat, and captive populations in the hands of killifish enthusiasts — including members of organisations such as the American Killifish Association — maintain a genetic reserve of the Kindia and Siramousaya strains. Continued maintenance of locality-pure captive lines and support for habitat protection in the Guinea Highlands are the principal conservation levers available for this species outside its native range.
