Taxonomy & naming
Scriptaphyosemion etzeli was described by Hans-Otto Berkenkamp in 1979, with the type locality recorded near Kirma, in the Porto Novo district of Sierra Leone. The original description placed the fish in a genus then broadly delimited within the African killifish assemblage; subsequent nomenclatural revision by Sonnenberg and Busch in 2012 transferred it to Scriptaphyosemion, a genus now recognised in Nothobranchiidae (some older literature references the family as Aplocheilidae). The valid name under Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is Scriptaphyosemion etzeli Berkenkamp, 1979.
Within Scriptaphyosemion the species is placed in the liberiense species group, a cluster of closely related West African killifishes sharing overlapping ranges across Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Guinea. The group is distinguished by body patterning and meristic counts rather than osteological characters, and the internal boundaries of the genus continue to be refined as molecular data accumulate.
Morphology
Adults reach a maximum of approximately 2 in total length (FishBase), making this a genuinely small killifish. The body plan is the elongate, slightly laterally compressed form typical of Scriptaphyosemion: a pointed snout, dorsal fin set well back, and a rounded caudal fin carrying the most striking colouration of the fish.
Males are strongly marked, with a dense concentration of red pigment in the caudal fin that functions as the species' most reliable field character. Body colouration typically combines blue-green iridescence on the flanks with red spotting or banding. Fin ray counts (meristics) recorded from the AKA reference library give D = 12–13 and A = 15–17. Females, as in virtually all Scriptaphyosemion species, are plainer — brownish with reduced or absent red patterning and less developed fin extensions. Egg diameter at spawning is approximately 0.5 in.
Sexual dimorphism in colour and finnage is pronounced and makes sexing straightforward in adults, though juveniles of both sexes initially resemble females.
Habitat
The native range is tightly restricted to coastal Sierra Leone: a narrow area west of Porto Novo, south of the Little Scarcies River mouth. Multiple specific collection localities are on record from killifish surveys — Kirma (type locality), Longilol (Lungi Lol), Malai, Yek Bir, Kobora, Petifu Junction, Magbundus Swamp, Bundulai, Bonkorkon, and Laminaya — scattered across this small geographic footprint.
Within that range, S. etzeli inhabits brooks and swampy areas of forested savanna. Water chemistry at collection sites has been recorded as consistently soft and acidic: pH 5–5.6, dissolved hardness DH 1–2 (extremely soft). Temperatures can rise to 88 °F in exposed rice-field habitats but are cooler and more stable in shaded woodland streams. The water is typically tannin-stained, with low mineral content, matching the blackwater profile common to West African lowland killies of the liberiense group.
Feeding
In the wild, S. etzeli feeds as a generalist micro-predator, taking small invertebrates — insects, larvae, small crustaceans, and worms — available in the leaf-littered brooks and swampy habitats it occupies. No specific gut-content study is on record for the species, but the diet inferred from habitat and close relatives is typical of small Scriptaphyosemion: predominantly invertebrate prey of an appropriate size for a 2 in fish.
In the aquarium the species presents no feeding difficulties. It readily accepts live and frozen small invertebrates — Daphnia, Artemia nauplii, bloodworm, and Tubifex — and can be transitioned to high-quality dried micro-pellets and flake, though live and frozen food maintain better colour and conditioning for breeding. Overfeeding of rich live food can accelerate condition loss in females.
Mating
Scriptaphyosemion etzeli is a non-annual killifish — it inhabits permanent or near-permanent water bodies and reproduces as a continuous plant or mop spawner rather than burying eggs in substrate for a diapausing dry-season rest. Males court females with fin displays, spreading the vividly marked caudal fin and adopting lateral postures that emphasise the red patterning.
Spawning occurs in pairs that engage in brief, repeated spawning embraces close to cover — among submerged vegetation, fine-leaved plants, or floating fibres near the water surface. Each embrace results in the deposition of a small number of adhesive eggs that attach to plant material or spawning mop fibres. A productive pair can yield approximately 60 eggs per week under good aquarium conditions, with activity continuing over an extended period rather than in a single concentrated event.
Breeding
Eggs of S. etzeli are adhesive, approximately 0.5 in in diameter, and incubate in water — there is no desiccation phase, no peat storage, and no diapause. At typical killifish keeping temperatures the incubation period is 12–16 days in water; eggs transferred to slightly damp peat or moss will hatch in approximately 20–24 days under that medium. Newly hatched fry are free-swimming and large enough to accept Artemia nauplii immediately.
In aquarium practice the standard approach for this and related Scriptaphyosemion species is to provide spawning mops of dark nylon wool or Java moss in the breeding tank and to collect eggs every few days by hand or by removing the mop. A shaded tank environment is preferred — the AKA reference library notes that the species prefers subdued light, with natural vegetation or overhead cover reducing stress on both sexes. Sexual maturity is reached at approximately six months of age. Adults are peaceful and non-destructive toward their own eggs in a sufficiently planted or furnished tank, though separating mops prevents egg predation and simplifies management.
In the aquarium
Scriptaphyosemion etzeli has a reputation in the killifish hobby as one of the more approachable West African species — peaceful by temperament, not overly demanding in water chemistry, and rewarding to keep and breed. The killi.co.uk species profile describes it as suitable for both beginners and experienced killifish keepers, and its colours show particularly well against green aquatic vegetation.
A small, well-planted species tank suits it best: a 10–15 US gal aquarium with a dark substrate, floating plants or overhead cover to diffuse light, tannin-producing driftwood or leaf litter, and very gentle filtration. Water should be soft and weakly acidic — targeting the pH 5–6 and DH 1–3 of its natural habitat is achievable with reverse osmosis water and a small addition of blackwater extract or dried leaf litter. Temperature in the range of 72–79 °F is appropriate for long-term keeping; the upper limit recorded in the wild (88 °F in rice fields) should not be used as a captive target.
One non-negotiable husbandry point: S. etzeli is an excellent jumper. A secure, close-fitting cover glass or lid is essential — gaps at filter inlets and heater cables are common escape routes. The species is best kept as a pair or a small group of one male to two or three females to distribute male attention. Mixed-species tanks with very small, calm tankmates of comparable size can work in a spacious setup, but the single-species approach guarantees the best condition and breeding results.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessment of 2020, attributed to Dankwa, Boussi, and Lalèyè, places Scriptaphyosemion etzeli as Critically Endangered under criterion B1ab(iii) — meaning its extent of occurrence is estimated to be less than 62 mi², the population is severely fragmented or present at very few locations, and a continuing decline in area, extent, or quality of habitat is inferred. The 2019 FishBase assessment records the same Critically Endangered status.
The primary threat is habitat destruction across the species' small coastal Sierra Leone range. Deforestation, conversion of forested savanna and wetland to agriculture, and the drainage of seasonal swamps and brooklets for rice cultivation directly eliminate the clean, soft-water microhabitats the species requires. Sierra Leone experienced protracted armed conflict through the 1990s and into the early 2000s, and the consequent displacement of conservation capacity, followed by rapid agricultural expansion in post-conflict recovery, has accelerated land-use change in the species' range area.
Maintaining living populations in the killifish hobby represents a genuine backstop. The AKA and European killifish associations hold studbook-style strain records for S. etzeli populations linked to known collection localities; hobbyists who keep and breed the species from documented strains contribute directly to ex-situ conservation. Wild collection pressure from the ornamental trade is not considered a primary threat given the species' limited commercial profile, but habitat loss remains unaddressed at the landscape scale.
