Trigonectes balzanii is a large South American annual killifish native to the seasonal floodplains and temporary pools of the Paraguay River basin, ranging from Mato Grosso in Brazil south through the Chaco lowlands of Paraguay and Argentina. Among the biggest of the annual killies, it can reach 6.5 in total length — a size unusual in a group where many species measure just 1–2 in — and its bold meristics, preference for clay-bottomed seasonal pools, and willingness to adapt to neutral or slightly alkaline water set it apart from the more familiar blackwater annuals of the Atlantic rainforest drainages. IUCN assessed it as Least Concern in 2020, though the seasonal wetlands it depends on face ongoing pressure from agricultural conversion across the Gran Chaco.

Taxonomy & naming

Trigonectes balzanii was described by the Italian ichthyologist Alberto Perugia in 1891, giving the authority in parentheses as (Perugia, 1891) to indicate the name has been moved from its original generic placement since description. The type locality is the Rio Paraguay at Villa Maria (Cáceres, Lagoa da Imbauva) in Mato Grosso state, Brazil. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (CAS) recognises the valid name as Trigonectes balzanii (Perugia, 1891).

The genus Trigonectes belongs to the family Rivulidae (Neotropical annual killifishes) and is distinguished from its close relatives by a combination of meristic and squamation characters. The species' meristics, as documented in the hobbyist and scientific literature, include averages of approximately D 10.2, A 15.2, and 34.8 lateral-line scales — proportions consistent with the genus. Trigonectes sits within the broader radiation of South American annual killifishes that have independently colonised the continent's vast network of seasonal savanna pools, a habitat that recurs in the Llanos of Venezuela, the Pantanal, the Gran Chaco, and the Argentine Pampas.

Morphology

Trigonectes balzanii is one of the largest annual killifish in South America, reaching 6.5 in total length according to FishBase — a size that dwarfs the majority of its rivulid relatives. The body plan is elongate and laterally compressed in the manner typical of the family, with the dorsal and anal fins set well back, a broad caudal fin, and the relatively large scales characteristic of Trigonectes.

Colouration in males is striking: the flanks carry iridescent markings against a darker body ground colour, and the unpaired fins are prominently patterned. Females are, as in virtually all annual killifishes, considerably plainer — brownish and less contrastingly marked — and are also typically smaller and deeper-bodied when gravid. Sexual dimorphism in colour and fin development is therefore pronounced and makes sexing straightforward once fish have matured.

Habitat

The species inhabits temporary waterbodies — seasonal pools, floodplain lagoons, and shallow savanna depressions — with clay or soft earthen substrates. The Paraguay River basin encompasses some of South America's most dynamic seasonal wetland systems, including the Pantanal in Mato Grosso and the Chaco lowlands extending through Paraguay and into northern Argentina. These environments are characterised by extreme annual flood-and-dry cycles: pools fill during the wet season (roughly October–March) and contract to mudflats or disappear entirely in the dry season.

Water chemistry in these open-savanna habitats differs substantially from the acidic blackwater streams of the Atlantic rainforest. It Rains Fishes (Frans Vermeulen) records that Trigonectes balzanii prefers pH at or above 7.0 (neutral) and temperatures at or above 77 °F, consistent with the hard, warm, seasonally turbid pools typical of the Chaco and Pantanal margins. The clay substrate is integral to the species' biology: it is the medium into which eggs are buried during spawning.

Feeding

Like most annual killifishes, Trigonectes balzanii is a carnivore in the wild, feeding on whatever invertebrates are available in the temporary pools it occupies — aquatic insects, microcrustaceans, worms, and small invertebrate larvae that proliferate during the wet season. The fast-growing life history of annual killies requires high protein intake: juveniles in particular need to grow rapidly to reach reproductive maturity before the pool dries.

In captivity the species accepts live and frozen foods readily. Bloodworm, Daphnia, Artemia nauplii, and small insect larvae are all suitable. Larger adults will take correspondingly larger invertebrates and small pieces of meaty food. Because juveniles of Trigonectes balzanii are noted to be cannibalistic (It Rains Fishes), separating size classes during rearing is important to maintain survival rates.

Mating

Trigonectes balzanii is a substrate-spawning annual killifish whose reproductive biology is centred on the clay-bottomed seasonal pools of its native range. When conditions are suitable — warm water, a soft substrate available — males court females actively, displaying the iridescent flank markings and extended fins that distinguish them from the plainer females. Courtship leads to a spawning embrace in which the pair press side by side and dive into the soft substrate together, depositing and fertilising eggs in the mud or clay.

This behaviour — the dive-and-bury — is the defining reproductive act of substrate-spawning annual killifishes and is quite distinct from the plant-spawning strategy of non-annual species. Each spawning act places one or a small number of eggs deep enough in the substrate to be insulated from desiccation when the pool dries. Wild fish may spawn repeatedly over the weeks of the wet season, depositing eggs across the pool floor, before the adults perish as the water disappears.

Breeding

The eggs of Trigonectes balzanii are drought-resistant and pass through diapause — a state of arrested embryonic development — during the dry season while the substrate bakes under the Chaco sun. When rains return and the pools refill, the eggs hatch in response to the re-wetting stimulus. It Rains Fishes records an incubation period of 5–12 months depending on storage conditions and diapause depth, a range consistent with other large South American annual killifishes.

In the aquarium, the hobby simulates this cycle using peat moss or coconut-coir substrate. After several weeks of spawning in a tank furnished with moist peat, the medium is removed, lightly pressed to remove excess water, and stored in a sealed bag at room temperature for 3–6 months (or longer, guided by the species' expected diapause duration). Re-wetting the peat — adding warm, slightly soft water — triggers hatching. Because the juveniles are fast-growing and cannibalistic, the fry should be sorted by size regularly and fed intensively on Artemia nauplii and micro-worm. The entire life cycle from hatch to first spawning can be completed in under a year, mirroring the rapid turnover of the wild annual life history.

In the aquarium

Trigonectes balzanii is an impressive species for the specialist annual-killifish keeper, combining large size with striking male colouration and the full seasonal life cycle that makes annual killies one of the most biologically fascinating groups in the freshwater aquarium hobby. A pair or trio (one male, two females) can be maintained in a tank of 15–20 US gal or more with a deep layer of peat or coir substrate for spawning. Given the species' preference for neutral to slightly alkaline water (pH ≥ 7.0) and warm temperatures (≥ 77 °F), standard tap water in many temperate regions suits it without extensive treatment — a point of contrast with the many acidic-water annual killies from Atlantic Brazil.

Because of its size, Trigonectes balzanii is not suitable for most community setups. Smaller tankmates are at risk of predation. Single-species or same-genus setups are the practical approach. Males may quarrel, so visual barriers or keeping a single male per tank reduces aggression. The species is rarely available in the mainstream trade and is chiefly encountered through killifish society networks and specialist breeders — the American Killifish Association (AKA) and its affiliated clubs are the most reliable routes to obtaining captive-bred stock.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Trigonectes balzanii as Least Concern (LC) in a 2020 assessment authored by Gabriel Brejão (published 2020-12-14). The relatively wide distribution across the Paraguay River basin — spanning Mato Grosso in Brazil through the Chaco of Paraguay and Argentina — and the species' occurrence in a range of seasonal pool types underpin this status.

Nevertheless, the seasonal wetlands and savanna pools on which all annual killifishes depend are among the most threatened freshwater habitats in South America. The Gran Chaco is undergoing rapid deforestation and agricultural conversion, particularly for soy cultivation and cattle ranching, and the drainage of temporary pools and modification of natural flood regimes directly eliminates annual killifish habitat. Unlike riverine species that may persist in flowing main channels, annual killies are entirely dependent on the pools that dry each year — remove the wet-dry cycle or drain the pool permanently, and the population disappears. Monitoring of T. balzanii populations in the context of Chaco land-use change will be important to confirm whether the Least Concern status remains appropriate in future assessments.
