The Spanish toothcarp is a small, hardy killifish confined to a narrow strip of Mediterranean coastal Spain — roughly between the Ebro delta near Tortosa and the headlands around Cape San Antonio. Valencia hispanica survives today in only a handful of spring-fed lagoons, marshes, and wetland channels where it persists under pressure from introduced mosquitofish, agricultural drainage, and water abstraction. The IUCN Red List assesses it as Vulnerable, and it remains one of the more range-restricted freshwater fishes native to the Iberian Peninsula. Unlike the majority of killifishes studied in the hobby, V. hispanica is a non-annual species: it does not bury its eggs in mud to survive a dry season, but spawns adhesive eggs onto aquatic vegetation and spawning mops in cool, permanent or near-permanent Mediterranean spring systems throughout the year.

Taxonomy & naming

Valencia hispanica was described by Achille Valenciennes in 1846 — the authority is presented in parentheses because the name has been moved from the original combination. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) recognises the valid combination as Valencia hispanica (Valenciennes, 1846), placing it in the genus Valencia Meyer, 1990, within the family Valenciidae.

The genus Valencia is a small, Mediterranean-endemic group of toothcarps that are morphologically and ecologically distinct from the larger killifish families. The genus name Valencia is a geographic reference to the Spanish region where the type material was collected. Two other species are now recognised: Valencia letourneuxi (Sauvage, 1880) in Greece and Albania, and Valencia robertae Doadrio, Perea & Yahyaoui, 2002, also from the western Mediterranean region. All three species are critically endangered. Killifish Society UK and Seriously Fish both treat the Valencia group as representative of the 'Eurasian killifish' assemblage — a relict lineage of non-annual toothcarps adapted to permanent Mediterranean spring systems rather than to the seasonal pools and ephemeral streams that drive the annual reproductive strategy dominant elsewhere in the order Cyprinodontiformes.

The specific epithet hispanica is a Latin adjective meaning 'of Hispania' — the Iberian Peninsula — signalling the type locality in Mediterranean Spain.

Morphology

Valencia hispanica is a slender, moderately elongated killifish reaching a maximum of 3 in total length in both males and females as recorded by FishBase. Most adults encountered in the field and in aquarium conditions are notably smaller, with females typically maturing at 1.5–2.5 in. The body profile is slightly compressed, with the dorsal fin set well back toward the caudal peduncle — a plan shared across many Cyprinodontiform families.

Colouration is one of the most striking features of the genus. Males are silvery-green to olive on the flanks, with iridescent scales that catch the light in blues and greens, and bold, dark vertical barring across the posterior body and caudal peduncle; the fins carry orange or reddish pigment in fully coloured individuals. Females are plainer — duller greenish-silver with reduced barring and little fin colour — but retain the same neat, streamlined shape. The sexual dimorphism is pronounced enough that the two sexes are easily distinguished at a glance. The toothcarp jaw is upturned and small, adapted for surface and near-surface feeding.

Habitat

The native range of Valencia hispanica is extremely restricted: Mediterranean coastal Spain between the Ebro delta (province of Tarragona) and Cape San Antonio (province of Alicante), with the core populations concentrated in the wetland systems of the Valencian Community — the 'Valencia' of the species' name. These habitats are spring-fed lagoons, marshes, irrigation channels, and coastal ditches that retain permanent or near-permanent water thanks to groundwater input. The key word is permanent: unlike the annual killifishes of sub-Saharan Africa and the Americas, V. hispanica does not tolerate complete desiccation and is not adapted to survive a dry season in the egg stage buried in mud.

Water chemistry in these Mediterranean spring systems is cool, clean, and alkaline. The KMAE study on related Valencia letourneuxi and comparable Iberian systems documents temperatures around 68 °F year-round in the spring-fed core habitats, with the water often described as permanently cool (59–72 °F), hard, and slightly alkaline — a direct expression of the calcareous geology of eastern Spain. These systems are neither acidic nor brackish in the strict sense, though some coastal lagoons may experience seasonal salinity fluctuations.

Vegetation is important: V. hispanica associates closely with submerged and emergent macrophytes — Ceratophyllum, Myriophyllum, reed margins, and similar fine-leaved plants — which serve as both shelter for adults and attachment substrate for spawned eggs. The fish is found predominantly in shallow, well-vegetated zones near the surface and margin.

Feeding

Valencia hispanica is a surface and near-surface opportunist, targeting small invertebrates in the water column and at the surface film. The upturned mouth is well adapted for picking off aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans, and zooplankton near the surface. In FishBase's summary the diet is described broadly as invertebrate prey typical of small Mediterranean toothcarps.

In captivity the fish feeds readily on live and frozen small invertebrates: Daphnia, Artemia nauplii, small bloodworm, tubifex, and similar live or frozen prey are all accepted. Dried foods of appropriate size are taken once the fish has settled. Because of its small maximum size, prey items should be sized accordingly — very fine foods are appropriate for small individuals. Regular live or frozen invertebrate meals maintain the best colour and condition in males.

Mating

Valencia hispanica is a non-annual, plant-spawning killifish. The pair approach one another in the vegetation, the male displaying his barred flanks and coloured fins to the female in a side-by-side courtship. Spawning takes place among fine-leaved plants, roots, or over floating spawning mops near the surface or just above the substrate, where the pair deposit adhesive eggs that cling to plant material or synthetic spawning media. The NANFA breeding-behaviour reference confirms that the species spawns readily in both floating and sunken spawning mops, and that the eggs are adhesive, placed deliberately on the spawning medium rather than being scattered freely.

Spawning is a drawn-out, iterative process rather than a single mass-release event. A compatible pair will spawn repeatedly over days and weeks when conditions are good, depositing a few eggs per session. The fish are comparatively long-lived for killifishes — FishBase records a maximum reported age of 4 years — and their reproductive effort is spread accordingly across a long life rather than concentrated into a single terminal season as in annual species.

Breeding

Eggs are adhesive and are attached individually to plant leaves, mop fibres, or other fine substrate. They incubate submerged in water and do not require a diapause period in moist peat or dry substrate — the non-annual mode means eggs proceed directly to hatching in the water column without any need for drying and remoistening. Incubation time in cool Mediterranean-temperature water (64–68 °F) is typically 12–18 days, longer than the 10–14 days common in tropical annual killifishes because the cooler temperature slows development.

In the aquarium, eggs can be collected from mops every few days and incubated in shallow containers of conditioned water at 64–68 °F with a small amount of antifungal treatment (methylene blue or similar). Hatching fry are relatively large and advanced for killifish — they become free-swimming quickly and can take newly hatched Artemia nauplii and similar small live foods from the outset. Gentle aeration and partial water changes support healthy fry development. Because the adults show no parental care and will eat small fry, the spawning medium should be moved to a separate vessel for incubation. Cool, hard, clean water is the principal requirement; the species does not need tropical temperatures and benefits from being kept in the 61–72 °F range rather than at typical tropical aquarium temperatures.

In the aquarium

Valencia hispanica is a species for the specialist hobbyist rather than the general community keeper, both for its specific environmental requirements and for the conservation significance of maintaining a captive population of one of Europe's most threatened freshwater fishes. The species has been kept and bred by European killifish enthusiasts for several decades, and a modest captive-breeding network exists through killifish societies — the Killifish Society UK notes the Valencia group (V. hispanica, V. letourneuxi, V. robertae) as a conservation priority within the hobby.

The fish requires cool, hard, alkaline water that mirrors its Mediterranean spring-system habitat: temperatures in the 61–72 °F range are ideal, and warmer typical tropical aquarium temperatures (79–82 °F) are stressful and shorten lifespan. A species tank of 15–20 US gal, well-planted with fine-leaved vegetation and supplemented with floating or sunk spawning mops, suits a small group of two to four fish (one or two males, two or three females). Filtration should be efficient but gentle — the fish is not a strong swimmer and strong current is inappropriate. Hard, slightly alkaline water (pH 7.5–8.0, hardness moderate to high) best replicates the spring-system chemistry.

Because captive stocks of V. hispanica are rare and genetically valuable, hobbyists maintaining the species are encouraged to connect with killifish societies to share eggs and fish and avoid inbreeding. Maintaining the species in captivity is considered a genuine conservation contribution given the precarious state of wild populations.

Conservation

Valencia hispanica is a range-restricted Mediterranean endemic under real conservation pressure. The IUCN Red List currently assesses it as Vulnerable, reflecting its narrow native range and the ongoing threats to its remaining populations; earlier literature surveying threatened European freshwater fishes had placed it among the region's most at-risk species, and the ERGA reference genome project has sequenced its genome as part of an initiative targeting Europe's conservation-priority freshwater endemics.

The primary driver of its decline is competition with and predation by Gambusia holbrooki, the eastern mosquitofish, introduced across Mediterranean Europe in the twentieth century for mosquito control. Gambusia out-competes Valencia for food and space, harasses adults, and directly preys on eggs and fry; its introduction has effectively extirpated V. hispanica from the majority of its former range. Secondary threats include the drainage and modification of the coastal wetlands and spring-fed lagoons the species depends on — agricultural water abstraction lowers spring flows and desiccates marginal habitat, while irrigation infrastructure fragments populations. Water pollution from agricultural run-off compounds the pressure.

Today V. hispanica survives in only a handful of localities along the Valencian coast. Active conservation management at some sites includes Gambusia removal, habitat restoration, and captive-breeding reintroduction programmes run by Spanish regional government and university research groups. The species is fully protected under Spanish and European Union legislation. Despite these efforts, wild populations remain vulnerable, and the captive population maintained by killifish hobbyists across Europe constitutes a meaningful genetic reserve for this fish.
