Taxonomy & naming
Valencia letourneuxi was described by the French ichthyologist Henri-Émile Sauvage in 1880, with material from the Ionian coast region. The authority is presented in parentheses because Sauvage's original placement has since been revised; the valid combination under Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is Valencia letourneuxi (Sauvage, 1880). The genus Valencia Costa, 1989 is monotypic in practice — it contains only this species — and belongs to the family Valenciidae within the order Cyprinodontiformes. FishBase assigns it family code 571 (Valenciidae) and lists it as demersal and non-migratory in freshwater.
The species epithet honours Aristide Horace Letourneux (1820–1890), a French botanist, entomologist, and jurist who served in Algeria and contributed substantially to the natural history collections of North Africa and the eastern Mediterranean. Letourneux collected widely in Greece and Egypt, and material he gathered formed the basis of several new species described by Sauvage. The family Valenciidae itself takes its name from the genus, which is in turn an allusion to Francisco de Valencia, a 16th-century Spanish natural historian.
No subspecies are currently recognised by the Catalog of Fishes. The population on Corfu and Lefkas, which gave rise to the informal name 'Corfu killifish' and which was the subject of the ZSL conservation programme, is now considered extirpated from those islands, leaving the mainland Albanian and western Greek populations as the surviving range.
Morphology
Valencia letourneuxi is a small, slender killifish reaching a maximum of 3 in total length (FishBase), though most wild adults are considerably smaller. The body form is elongate and subcylindrical — typical of the killifish bauplan — with the dorsal fin set far back toward the caudal peduncle and the mouth positioned at the very tip of the snout, directed slightly upward. The lateral line is vestigial or absent on the flanks, consistent with the Cyprinodontiformes pattern.
Colouration in males is more vivid than in females: males typically show a greenish-brown to olive-grey ground colour with faint dark barring or spotting on the flanks, and the fins may carry a bluish iridescence. Females are plainer, tending toward a uniform tan or brownish tone with reduced patterning. Eggs are described as approximately 0.5 in in diameter — substantial relative to the adult body size — and adhesive, laid in small batches rather than broadcast simultaneously.
The species is superficially similar to the related Valencia hispanica of Spain, which has a more restricted range in the Valencian coastal drainages; the two are distinguished by meristic and colour characters and confirmed by geography.
Habitat
The native range of Valencia letourneuxi spans a narrow coastal strip on the western Ionian side of the Balkans: from Lake Butrint in southern Albania southward through the Epirus lowlands to the Alfios drainage in the Peloponnese in western Greece, with historical records also from the Greek Ionian islands Corfu and Lefkas — populations on both islands are now considered extirpated. The core habitat is low-gradient, slow-moving or standing freshwater: swamps, shallow lakeside margins, flooded meadows, spring-fed streams, brackish lagoons near the coast, and densely vegetated drainage ditches.
Water conditions recorded from field sites are notably cooler than many killifish: FishBase gives a temperature range of 59–75 °F for this subtropical species, reflecting the Mediterranean climate regime with warm dry summers but mild winters rather than the year-round warmth of tropical killi habitats. The species tolerates a modest degree of salinity — recorded from habitats up to approximately 4 parts per thousand in the wild — and laboratory experiments have shown physiological tolerance to much higher salinities (up to 46 ppt), though such extremes are not part of its natural ecology. Habitat connectivity, shallow depth, dense aquatic macrophytes, and relatively still water appear to be the consistent habitat requirements across all known sites.
The IUCN notes that Valencia letourneuxi is endemic to the western Ionian ecoregion. The KMAE journal reported on long-lost populations in south Albania, underlining that the actual extent of remaining habitat is poorly mapped and almost certainly smaller than historical records imply.
Feeding
Valencia letourneuxi feeds primarily on chironomid (midge) larvae and other small aquatic invertebrates, with FishBase noting insects as the principal dietary component. This insectivorous habit is entirely consistent with the species' surface and mid-water habitat position in weedy, invertebrate-rich lowland waters. The upturned mouth is adapted to seizing prey at or near the water surface — chironomid pupae rising to emerge, small crustaceans, and terrestrial invertebrates that fall onto the water are all accessible targets.
In the aquarium the species accepts live and frozen invertebrate foods readily: chironomid larvae (bloodworm), daphnia, cyclops, and brine shrimp nauplii are suitable staples. Dry foods are taken once the fish are settled, but live and frozen items maintain better condition and colouration. Small body size means that prey items must be appropriately sized — nothing larger than a small chironomid larva for juveniles, and even adults require relatively fine foods.
Mating
As a non-annual killifish inhabiting permanent or near-permanent water, Valencia letourneuxi does not bury eggs in peat substrate or undergo diapause. Instead, it is a plant spawner: pairs or small groups scatter adhesive eggs among fine-leaved submerged plants, roots, and fibrous material near the water surface or over the substrate over extended periods rather than in a single synchronised spawning event. The spawning mop — a bundle of fine synthetic or natural wool strands used by hobbyists to mimic dense plant growth — is the standard trigger for captive breeding.
Males court females with lateral displays, spreading fins and orienting alongside the female before positioning for spawning. Individual spawning acts are brief, with a small number of eggs deposited in each episode; females may lay across many sessions over days or weeks during the breeding season. The eggs are adhesive and approximately 0.5 in in diameter — comparatively large for the adult body size — and adhere to plant surfaces without further parental attention. Maximum reported lifespan is approximately 3 years (FishBase), which is long for a killifish and consistent with the non-annual life strategy.
Breeding
Eggs incubate in water at room temperature without any drying or peat-packing phase: this is a plant-spawner whose embryos develop normally submerged, hatching after 16–20 days at typical Mediterranean water temperatures (FishBase records this incubation window). Larvae are initially small and require fine foods — infusoria or commercial fry powder — before transitioning to freshly hatched brine shrimp nauplii. Growth is relatively slow compared with annual killifish.
Captive breeding has been conducted both by specialist hobbyists and as part of formal conservation programmes. The Zoological Society of London established a captive insurance population of Valencia letourneuxi — described as the 'Corfu killifish' in ZSL literature — and worked with Greek conservation partners to develop reintroduction and habitat-restoration protocols. Aquarium conditions for breeding should replicate the species' cool, clear, hard, slightly alkaline water: temperatures in the range 64–72 °F promote spawning without stressing the fish, and overly warm conditions shorten lifespan and suppress reproduction. Spawning mops or Java moss clumps placed at multiple levels provide egg-deposition sites; eggs should be removed regularly to a separate incubation vessel to prevent predation by the parents.
In the aquarium
Valencia letourneuxi has a reputation as a moderately demanding aquarium fish — not difficult in the sense of requiring exotic water conditions, but a species that needs specific temperature management that makes it unsuitable for the tropical community tank. FishBase notes it as 'difficult in the aquarium', which in practice means it requires cool water (ideally 59–72 °F), good filtration without strong current, and consistently clean conditions. In centrally heated homes a chiller or unheated room may be necessary; the species does poorly if kept above 75 °F for extended periods.
A species-only or cold-water killifish tank with conspecifics or compatible Mediterranean cool-water fish is the appropriate setting. Dense planting with fine-leaved species — hornwort, water sprite, Java moss — fulfils both the spawning and the shelter requirements. A tightly fitting lid is important, as with most killifish, since the species is capable of jumping. The aquarium need not be large: a well-filtered, planted 15–20 US gal tank can maintain a small breeding group comfortably.
In the hobby the species is uncommon but not impossible to find through specialist killifish societies and conservation-linked breeders. Responsible acquisition from captive breeding lines rather than wild collection is strongly encouraged given the precarious wild status. Keepers of this species are in effect participating in an informal ex-situ conservation buffer, and record-keeping on breeding successes and population health has direct value to ongoing conservation work.
Conservation
Valencia letourneuxi was assessed as Critically Endangered by the IUCN in December 2023 (published 2024, assessment reference: Ford, M. & Kalogianni, E. 2024, e.T266190752A137340791) under criterion A2ace, indicating an observed or inferred population reduction of 80% or more over the past ten years or three generations attributable to factors that have not ceased. The population trend is listed as decreasing. The IUCN notes it as one of the most endangered freshwater fishes in Europe.
The principal documented threat is competition with and predation by introduced mosquitofish (Gambusia holbrooki and G. affinis), which were released across the Mediterranean basin during the 20th century as biological mosquito-control agents and have since devastated populations of small native cyprinodontiform fishes from Spain to Greece. Mosquitofish are aggressive, consume eggs and fry of cohabiting species, and outcompete small native fish for invertebrate prey. Additional pressures include drainage of the lowland wetlands and spring-fed habitats that Valencia letourneuxi depends on, water extraction from springs and streams for irrigation and domestic use, and coastal development that has modified or destroyed the marshy lagoon and wetland edge habitats of the Ionian coastal plain.
The Zoological Society of London has maintained an active conservation programme for this species under the banner 'Saving the Corfu Killifish', establishing captive insurance populations and working with Greek partners on habitat protection and reintroduction. The KMAE journal has published on the species' conservation status and distribution in south Albania, identifying populations that had been lost to science. Given the species' extreme range restriction — a narrow coastal strip across two countries — any localised habitat catastrophe, pollution event, or further mosquitofish spread could drive remaining populations to extinction rapidly. Legal protection across its range and transboundary Greek-Albanian conservation cooperation are identified as critical needs.
