Taxonomy & naming
Brachyhypopomus belindae was formally described in 2017 by Crampton, de Santana, Waddell and Lovejoy in Neotropical Ichthyology, as one of fifteen new species erected in a single revision of the genus Brachyhypopomus. It belongs to the family Hypopomidae, the bluntnose knifefishes, within the order Gymnotiformes — the New-World electric knifefishes, a group of bony fish defined not by scales or ordinary fins but by an electric organ and a long ribbon-like anal fin used for propulsion. Gymnotiformes are unrelated to the superficially similar Asian featherback and clown knifefishes (Chitala, Notopterus); the resemblance between the two groups is convergent body shape, not shared ancestry.
The species epithet belindae honors the evolutionary biologist Belinda Siew-Woon Chang. The type locality is in Amazonas state, Brazil, at Tefé on the rio Solimões — part of the central Amazon's whitewater floodplain system. The Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the valid name; as a recently described, narrow-range species, B. belindae is not well known outside the specialist taxonomic and ecological literature.
Morphology
Brachyhypopomus belindae is a small, elongate, laterally compressed fish reaching only around 4.5 in in total length — modest even by the standards of its genus, which contains some of the smallest gymnotiforms. Like other bluntnose knifefishes it has a blunt, rounded snout rather than the elongated probing snout of the sand knifefishes (Rhamphichthys, Gymnorhamphichthys), and no dorsal or tail fin: locomotion is handled by a single long anal fin running most of the underside of the body, thrown into travelling waves that let the fish move forward or backward with equal ease.
The genus is described as soft-bodied and cryptically pigmented, an adaptation to a life spent hidden in leaf litter and dim floodplain water rather than in the open. The species has 24–26 precaudal vertebrae, a meristic character used to distinguish it from its close relatives in the 2017 revision. As in all gymnotiforms it is scaleless, and it carries an electric organ running along the body together with electroreceptor pores across the skin that read the field it produces — the sense it relies on far more than sight in its dark, turbid habitat.
Habitat
Brachyhypopomus belindae is known from the central Amazon River basin in Brazil, with its type locality at Tefé on the rio Solimões. Ecological studies describe it as a stenotopic floodplain species — one narrowly restricted to a particular habitat type — found specifically in nutrient-rich whitewater floodplain environments rather than the blackwater or clearwater systems that other gymnotiforms favor. Whitewater rivers like the Solimões carry heavy sediment loads from Andean erosion, and their seasonally flooded margins support dense stands of submerged vegetation, root mats and leaf litter.
Water there is warm and turbid; FishBase records a pH range of roughly 6.3–7.3 and temperatures spanning 81–93 °F in the wild. As with all Hypopomidae, the species is nocturnally active and spends daylight hours hidden among cover, emerging after dark to hunt using its electric sense in water where vision would be of little use regardless of turbidity.
Feeding
Genus-level accounts describe Brachyhypopomus as nocturnally active predators of small aquatic invertebrates, and there is no reason to think B. belindae departs from that pattern. Foraging almost certainly happens after dark, among leaf litter and root tangles in its floodplain habitat, with prey — small insect larvae, worms and other soft-bodied invertebrates — located by electrolocation rather than sight, in the same manner documented for related bluntnose and sand knifefishes.
No species-specific dietary study has been published for B. belindae; this account reflects the documented ecology of Brachyhypopomus as a genus rather than direct observation of this species. Data on its feeding behavior in the wild, and any record of its diet in captivity, remain sparse.
Mating
Courtship and reproductive behavior have not been documented for Brachyhypopomus belindae specifically. What can be said comes from the biology of pulse-type gymnotiforms generally: the electric organ discharge functions as a communication signal as well as a sensing tool, with species- and sex-typical waveforms that plausibly play a role in courtship and rival recognition in the genus, as they do in other electric knifefishes.
Beyond that inference, no field or laboratory account of mate selection, courtship displays or spawning approach exists for this species in the literature consulted. This is a genuinely data-sparse area for a species described only in 2017.
Breeding
Breeding biology for Brachyhypopomus belindae is undocumented. Hypopomidae as a family are small egg-layers whose reproduction is poorly studied in the wild and essentially unrecorded in captivity; where breeding is known in related genera it typically involves eggs scattered or deposited among leaf litter, roots or sediment, generally timed to seasonal flooding, with little to no parental care afterward.
There is no record of B. belindae being kept or bred in aquaria. Any statement about its specific breeding mode beyond the general pattern for the family would be speculation; the honest position is that this remains data sparse.
In the aquarium
Brachyhypopomus belindae does not appear to be established in the aquarium hobby; the sources available for this species are taxonomic and ecological literature, not aquarist accounts, and no husbandry record could be confirmed. Given that absence of direct information, any care guidance here is inferred from the documented needs of Hypopomidae and gymnotiforms generally, and should be treated as provisional rather than field-tested for this species.
Were it kept, a bluntnose knifefish of this size and ecology would need a dimly lit, sand- or leaf-litter-bottomed tank with ample cover, since it is nocturnal and shelters by day. Being scaleless, it would carry the same sensitivities seen across the order: vulnerability to ammonia and nitrate, and a need for reduced doses of copper-based or otherwise harsh medications. Its small size and soft body suggest a peaceful, delicate fish unsuited to boisterous tankmates — but this is inference from its relatives, not a documented aquarium protocol. Captive-bred stock is not known to exist for this species.
Conservation
Brachyhypopomus belindae is assessed by the IUCN as Vulnerable, an assessment dated November 9, 2020. Unlike many widespread gymnotiforms rated Least Concern or Data Deficient, this species appears to be tied to a comparatively narrow stretch of the central Amazon floodplain around Tefé and the rio Solimões, which raises its exposure to localized habitat pressures.
Whitewater floodplain habitats of the central Amazon face pressure from deforestation, altered flood regimes and water pollution, all plausible drivers behind a Vulnerable rating for a stenotopic species with a restricted range. As a fish essentially unknown to the aquarium trade, the relevant conservation concern is habitat protection in its home basin rather than collection pressure.
