Taxonomy & naming
Brachyhypopomus benjamini was described in 2017 by Crampton, de Santana, Waddell and Lovejoy as part of a major revision of the genus that added fifteen new species at once, a reflection of how poorly sampled and taxonomically unresolved the bluntnose knifefishes remained until recently. It belongs to the family Hypopomidae within the order Gymnotiformes, the New-World electric knifefishes — a group of bony fish defined less by a shared body plan than by a shared organ: nearly every species produces a weak electric organ discharge (EOD) used for electrolocation and communication, propelling itself with a single long anal fin rather than the fins used by most other fish.
The species epithet honours Benjamin T. D. Crampton, a British and Irish diplomat and amateur ornithologist who is the brother of the paper's first author and who collected the holotype. As with the rest of the genus, Brachyhypopomus benjamini is not related to the Asian featherback or clown knifefishes (Chitala, Notopterus); the resemblance in silhouette is convergent, not a sign of kinship. The Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the valid name.
Morphology
Brachyhypopomus benjamini has the body plan typical of the bluntnose knifefishes: elongate and laterally compressed, tapering toward a caudal filament of variable length, with a soft, scaleless body except for a strip of scales along the mid-dorsal line. Members of the genus are generally small to moderate in size, with the wider genus running well under 10 in total length, and are described in the literature as cryptically pigmented — colouring built for concealment among leaf litter and root tangles rather than display.
As in all Hypopomidae, an electric organ runs along much of the body, paired with sensory pores across the skin that detect the field it generates. The discharge is pulse-type: brief, discrete electrical pulses on the order of half a millisecond to a few milliseconds long, rather than the continuous wave-type signal used by some other gymnotiform lineages. There is no dorsal fin and no true tail fin; locomotion comes from undulations of the long anal fin, letting the fish move backward as readily as forward through tangled cover.
Habitat
The type locality is in Peru, in the department of Loreto near Jenaro Herrera on the río Ucayali, part of the upper Amazon drainage. Brachyhypopomus benjamini is treated as endemic to the upper Amazon basin and has been recorded occurring alongside other Brachyhypopomus species in the lower río Ucayali region, indicating it shares its habitat with several close relatives rather than occupying it alone.
The genus as a whole favours lentic or slow-flowing water — swamps, seasonal floodplains and quiet backwaters rather than fast channels — and B. benjamini is presumed to follow that pattern given its collection from the Ucayali floodplain system. These are warm, dim, structurally complex environments, thick with submerged leaf litter and roots, where a fish with reduced reliance on vision and a strong electric sense has a clear advantage after dark.
Feeding
Brachyhypopomus benjamini is presumed, on the strength of what is documented for the genus, to be a nocturnal predator of aquatic invertebrates. Related, better-studied Brachyhypopomus species hunt insect larvae and small invertebrates hidden in sediment or leaf litter, locating them primarily through electrolocation rather than sight, in keeping with their nocturnal, cryptically pigmented habit.
No feeding observations specific to B. benjamini have been documented in the sources available for this account; the diet described here should be read as inferred from its genus and family rather than confirmed for this species individually.
Mating
Courtship and signalling in the bluntnose knifefishes are thought to run substantially through the electric organ discharge, as in other pulse-type gymnotiforms: a species- and individual-specific pulse pattern that can announce identity, sex and readiness to spawn to any fish sharing the same dark water. No courtship behaviour has been documented specifically for Brachyhypopomus benjamini, and the wider genus is described in the taxonomic literature as having breeding that is poorly documented overall.
Given the data gap, nothing more specific can honestly be said about this species' mating behaviour beyond the general pattern expected of a pulse-type Hypopomidae.
Breeding
Breeding in Brachyhypopomus as a genus is poorly documented, and no spawning account exists for B. benjamini specifically. Where reproduction has been described for related bluntnose and sand knifefishes, it takes the form of egg-scattering among leaf litter, roots or sediment, typically tied to the wet season, with little or no parental care afterward.
This species has not been reported in the aquarium hobby, let alone bred there; there is no captive-breeding record to draw on, and any statement about its reproductive biology beyond the genus-level pattern would be speculation rather than fact.
In the aquarium
Brachyhypopomus benjamini is not established in the aquarium trade and there is no record of it being kept or offered for sale; this account exists for completeness of the Gymnotiformes order rather than as husbandry guidance drawn from experience with the species. Any care approach would have to be extrapolated from its genus and family: a small, soft-bodied, scaleless, nocturnal predator of dim, structurally complex, slow-moving Amazonian water, needing full cover, gentle water movement, and — because it lacks scales — careful attention to water quality and medication dosing, avoiding copper-based treatments.
Prospective keepers of any Brachyhypopomus should treat that as an inference from the genus, not a validated protocol, and should expect an animal that is delicate, cryptic and demanding of very stable, soft, warm water.
Conservation
Brachyhypopomus benjamini has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List; as a species described only in 2017, it is classified here as Data Deficient rather than assigned a category the evidence does not support. It is known only from the upper Amazon basin of Peru, and as a narrow-range recent description sharing habitat with several congeners in the same river system, its status would benefit from a proper Red List assessment.
No species-specific threats have been documented, but narrow-range Amazonian endemics of this kind are generally exposed to the broader pressures on Amazon floodplain habitat: deforestation, water-quality decline and hydrological change from damming or land-use conversion in the basin.
