Compsaraia iara is a deep-channel ghost knifefish described from the Amazon River in 2017, a slim, matte-toned fish with a short, blunt snout and no dorsal or tail fin — propulsion comes entirely from a single long anal fin rippling beneath the body. Like every member of the family Apteronotidae, it generates a weak, continuous electric field around itself and reads the world through the way that field is disturbed, a sense called electrolocation that stands in for eyesight in the dark, sediment-laden water it inhabits. It is named for Iara, the water nymph of Amazonian folklore said to lure people into the river depths — a fitting name for a fish that lives its life largely out of sight, deep in the Amazon's main channel.

Taxonomy & naming

Compsaraia iara was described by Bernt and Albert in 2017, one of a small number of species placed in the genus Compsaraia within the family Apteronotidae, the ghost knifefishes, in the order Gymnotiformes — the New-World electric knifefishes. Gymnotiformes are bony fish, but unusual ones: they are defined by an electric organ and a long ribbon-like anal fin rather than by a conventional body plan, and they are only distantly related to the rest of the freshwater aquarium fauna.

Within the order, the Apteronotidae are distinguished by an electric organ built from modified nerve tissue rather than muscle, which produces a fast, continuous wave-type discharge — the most refined electrosensory system among the knifefishes. The genus Compsaraia was itself only recently split out and described as new to science in the 2010s, and C. iara was one of the species erected to sort out a group of deep-channel Amazonian electric knifefish that had previously been lumped with relatives. The Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the valid name. Despite the shared common name "knifefish", Compsaraia and its Apteronotidae relatives are not related to the Asian featherback or clown knifefishes (Chitala, Notopterus), which are bonytongues in an entirely different order — the resemblance is convergent body shape, not kinship.

Morphology

Compsaraia iara is readily told apart from its relatives by a short, rounded snout and a small, subterminal mouth carrying reduced dentition — a combination that distinguishes it from the more elongate, tube-snouted ghost knifefishes such as Sternarchorhynchus. Like other Apteronotidae it has no dorsal fin and no true tail fin; the body tapers to a fine point, and movement forward or backward comes from undulations of a long anal fin running along most of the underside. The species reaches a modest maximum size for the family, recorded to about 9.5 in total length.

As in all gymnotiforms, an electric organ runs the length of the body and the skin is studded with electroreceptor pores that pick up distortions in the field it generates. Compsaraia iara produces a continuous, biphasic wave-type electric organ discharge with a high repetition rate — reported in the 1,240–1,400 Hz range — among the faster discharge frequencies documented in the genus, and this signal doubles as both a sensory tool and a means of communicating identity and sex to other knifefish. The species is scaleless, a trait shared across the order that carries real consequences for how it must be kept in captivity.

Habitat

Compsaraia iara is known from the eastern and central Amazon River basin in Brazil, recorded between Ilha Grande de Gurupá and the mouth of the Rio Içá — a stretch of the Amazon's main channel rather than a wide continental range. It is a fish of white-water river habitat, living demersally at depths of roughly 2 to 30 metres, well below the surface in the fast-flowing, sediment-rich water that gives Amazonian white-water rivers their pale, turbid color.

That deep-channel, turbid environment is essentially lightless for practical purposes, which is precisely the setting the species' electric sense is built for. Little has been published on finer habitat details — substrate preference, seasonal movement or associations with cover — beyond its documented depth range and white-water affinity; much of what is known about it comes from taxonomic and electrophysiological work rather than field ecology.

Feeding

FishBase records Compsaraia iara as a dietary specialist, feeding almost exclusively on the larvae of biting midges (family Ceratopogonidae) along with incidental fine sand, and carrying a trophic level estimate of about 3.3 — consistent with a fish that preys on small invertebrates rather than other fish. That narrow, specialised diet, combined with the reduced dentition and small subterminal mouth described for the species, points to a fish that picks tiny larvae out of deep-channel sediment rather than actively hunting larger prey.

As with habitat, little is published beyond this FishBase summary; foraging behaviour, timing (day versus night activity) and any dietary flexibility have not been documented for this species specifically. Data sparse beyond the recorded stomach-content profile.

Mating

No species-specific courtship or spawning behaviour has been documented for Compsaraia iara. What is known comes from the physiology of its electric organ discharge: the wave-type signal it produces is not just a navigational tool but carries information about the fish's identity and readiness to breed, and in well-studied relatives within Apteronotidae, males and females shift their discharge frequencies toward one another during courtship in an electrical exchange. It is reasonable to expect a similar role for electric signalling in this species' courtship, but this has not been directly observed or published for C. iara.

Maturity data for the species is explicitly noted as unavailable by FishBase, underscoring how little is known of its reproductive biology beyond the general pattern shared across the ghost knifefishes.

Breeding

Compsaraia iara has no documented breeding record in aquaria; it is not established in the ornamental trade and virtually nothing has been published on its reproductive mode beyond the fact that, like other Apteronotidae, it almost certainly lays eggs rather than bearing live young. There is no evidence of any parental care in the family, and nothing specific to this species to suggest otherwise.

Given its deep-channel habitat, specialised diet and apparent rarity outside scientific collection, breeding in captivity is essentially undocumented and unlikely to be attempted. The honest position is data sparse: prefer noting the absence of a breeding record over speculating about a protocol.

In the aquarium

Compsaraia iara is not an established aquarium fish — it is a recently described, deep-channel Amazonian specialist known mainly from scientific collection rather than the ornamental trade, and hobbyist care information for the species does not exist. Anyone encountering it would need to extend the general principles that apply across the ghost knifefishes: a scaleless fish is sensitive to ammonia and nitrate and reacts badly to copper-based medications, so mature filtration and reduced medication doses are essential; a fish adapted to deep, dark river channels needs subdued lighting and secure cover, and given its narrow, specialised natural diet of midge larvae, replicating adequate nutrition in captivity would be a real challenge.

Given the total absence of a trade or husbandry record, this is a fish to describe rather than to recommend keeping — any specimen in captivity would most likely be part of a scientific collection, not a home aquarium.

Conservation

Compsaraia iara is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, based on a 2020 assessment. Although it is known from a comparatively limited, well-defined stretch of the eastern and central Amazon main channel rather than the whole basin, the assessment reflects that this range lies within relatively intact river habitat and the species faces no known major threat.

As with many recently described, deep-channel Amazonian fish, the practical conservation picture is less about active decline and more about how little is known: broader pressures on the Amazon system — damming, deforestation, and water-quality change from mining and agriculture — are relevant to the basin as a whole, but no species-specific threat has been documented for C. iara.
