Gymnotus aripuana is a stoutly-built, boldly-barred banded knifefish described in 2020 from the Aripuanã River of the Brazilian Amazon, one of two new species (alongside G. arapiuns) that brought its subgenus, Lamontianus, to six recognized members. Like every member of the New-World electric knifefish order Gymnotiformes, it carries a weak electric organ running the length of its body, generating a private electric field it reads through sensory pores across its skin — a sense used for electrolocation in the dark, tannin-stained water it inhabits, and for signalling other Gymnotus around it. It swims by rippling a single long anal fin rather than a tail, moving backward as readily as forward, and like all its relatives it is scaleless. Gymnotus is the toughest and most widespread genus of electric knifefish, an air-breathing nocturnal predator found from Argentina to southern Mexico, but G. aripuana itself is known only from its home river system and remains almost entirely undocumented in the aquarium trade.

Taxonomy & naming

Gymnotus aripuana was described by Kim, Crampton and Albert in 2020 in the journal Copeia (now Ichthyology & Herpetology), alongside a second new species, G. arapiuns, from the same general region of the Brazilian Amazon. The description brought the subgenus Lamontianus to six recognized species. It belongs to the family Gymnotidae within the order Gymnotiformes, the New-World electric knifefishes — bony fish, but highly unusual ones, defined by an electric organ running the length of the body and a single long anal fin that replaces the dorsal and tail fins of a typical fish. Every member of the order generates a weak electric organ discharge (EOD) around itself, used to sense its surroundings by electrolocation and to communicate with others of its kind; Gymnotus produces a pulse-type discharge, delivered as discrete pulses rather than a continuous wave.

The species epithet honours the Aripuanã River, a tributary of the Rio Madeira system in the Brazilian Amazon and the type locality. Gymnotus is the only genus in the order to have spread beyond South America, reaching north through Central America as far as southern Mexico, though G. aripuana itself is a Brazilian Shield endemic with no such range. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the authority for the valid name; the New-World electric knifefishes are entirely unrelated to the superficially similar Asian featherback and clown knifefishes (Chitala, Notopterus), a case of convergent body shape rather than kinship.

Morphology

Gymnotus aripuana reaches a modest size for the genus: the holotype measured 11 in total length, with specimens examined in the description ranging up to about 11.5 in. Like other banded knifefishes it has the stout, laterally compressed, boldly barred body typical of Gymnotus — a build noticeably heavier and less blade-like than the ghost knifefishes (Apteronotus) or the glass knifefishes (Eigenmannia). There is no dorsal fin and no true tail fin; locomotion comes from a long anal fin run in travelling waves along the underside of the body, letting the fish move forward or backward with equal ease.

As in all gymnotiforms the skin is scaleless and carries the sensory pores that read the electric field generated by the fish's electric organ, which runs along much of the body length behind the head. Gymnotus aripuana is placed in the subgenus Lamontianus, a group of Gymnotus species adapted to the clear- and blackwater rivers of the Brazilian and Guiana Shields rather than the sediment-laden whitewater rivers of the Amazon lowlands, and it is distinguished from its close relatives — including the similarly-sized G. arapiuns, described in the same paper — by fine details of coloration, body proportions and electric organ discharge structure examined by the describing authors.

Habitat

Gymnotus aripuana is known only from the Aripuanã River, a tributary of the Rio Madeira system within the Brazilian Amazon basin. As a member of the subgenus Lamontianus it belongs to a group of species associated with clear-water and blackwater habitats of the Brazilian and Guiana Shields, rather than the turbid whitewater rivers draining the Andes — waters that tend to be warm, acidic and low in dissolved minerals, often stained the colour of tea by dissolved tannins from surrounding forest.

That darkness and turbidity is where the electric sense earns its keep: in water where sight is of limited use, Gymnotus reads its surroundings — obstacles, prey, other fish — through the field generated by its electric organ. Like other members of the genus it is thought to be a nocturnal predator that shelters by day among submerged roots, leaf litter and other cover, emerging after dark to hunt. Gymnotus as a genus is notably tolerant of poorly oxygenated water, a trait tied to a facultative ability to breathe air, though this has not been documented specifically for G. aripuana.

Feeding

Detailed dietary data for Gymnotus aripuana has not been published; the species is known from a small number of museum specimens collected for its original description, not from field studies of its ecology. What can be said follows from the genus: Gymnotus species are nocturnal predators that hunt small invertebrates and other prey using electrolocation, detecting the electrical signatures of animals hidden in sediment, leaf litter or root tangles where eyesight would be of little help in the dark, tannin-stained water it inhabits.

As air-breathing, robustly built predators, Gymnotus species are generally considered opportunistic hunters of aquatic insect larvae, worms, small crustaceans and, in larger individuals, small fish. Nothing in the available literature suggests G. aripuana departs from this general pattern, but the species-specific data needed to say more precisely what it eats or how it forages simply has not been gathered.

Mating

No courtship or mating behaviour has been documented for Gymnotus aripuana specifically; the description paper is a taxonomic account based on preserved specimens, not a field or behavioural study. What is known comes from research on the genus as a whole. Gymnotus species communicate through their electric organ discharge, which carries information about a fish's identity and sex and features in interactions between individuals; electric signalling of this kind is thought to play a role in courtship and in establishing territory between rival males, alongside physical approach and display in the dark.

Breeding in Gymnotus is seasonal, cued to the flooding of the wet season, when rising water opens up new areas of flooded vegetation and marginal habitat for spawning and shelter. Beyond these genus-level patterns, data on courtship specific to G. aripuana is sparse to non-existent.

Breeding

Gymnotus aripuana has not been bred in captivity and there is no record of it appearing in the aquarium trade; everything known about it comes from a handful of wild-collected museum specimens. Reproduction in the genus Gymnotus is unusual among fishes for showing genuine parental care: the male builds and guards a nest, typically a depression in the substrate or a shelter formed among the root masses of aquatic plants, into which the female spawns. The male then guards the eggs and the resulting larvae, a pattern documented across several Gymnotus species and linked to the seasonal flooding that triggers spawning.

Nothing about the breeding of G. aripuana itself has been recorded, and given how narrowly it is known — from its type locality alone — it should be treated as essentially unbred and undocumented rather than assumed to follow the genus pattern in every detail. Prefer honesty over invented specifics here: data is sparse.

In the aquarium

Gymnotus aripuana is not an aquarium fish in any practical sense — it does not appear to be established, or even occasionally available, in the hobby trade, and the species is known from scientific collections rather than fishkeeping. What follows is drawn from the general care requirements of Gymnotus as a genus, offered for context rather than as species-specific guidance.

Banded knifefishes are scaleless, like all gymnotiforms, and correspondingly sensitive to ammonia and nitrate, and to copper-based or otherwise harsh medications, which should be avoided or used at reduced doses. They are nocturnal predators, active and often territorial with their own kind, and are not safe with small or bite-size tankmates, which they will hunt after dark using their electric sense. Any Gymnotus kept in captivity needs dim lighting, ample cover such as pipes or root tangles to retreat into by day, warm and clean water, and — given the genus's air-breathing tolerance of low-oxygen conditions in the wild — reliable filtration and oxygenation regardless. Captive-bred stock, where it exists for any Gymnotus species, is always preferable to wild collection, though for G. aripuana specifically no aquarium supply chain is known to exist at all.

Conservation

Gymnotus aripuana has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Data Deficient by default: it was described only in 2020 and is known from a small number of specimens taken from a single river system, the Aripuanã, a tributary of the Rio Madeira in the Brazilian Amazon. No population trend, abundance estimate or threat assessment has been published.

As a narrow-range endemic restricted to one drainage, G. aripuana sits in the more vulnerable category of gymnotiform — species like it, rather than the widespread, continent-spanning members of the order, are the ones exposed by habitat change, damming, deforestation and pollution within a single river system. The Aripuanã and wider Madeira basin have seen substantial hydroelectric development and deforestation pressure in recent decades, though no study has yet tied these pressures directly to this species. Its practical conservation status is best summarized as unknown and unmonitored rather than as either secure or threatened.
