Taxonomy & naming
Gymnotus anguillaris was described by Hoedeman in 1962 and belongs to the family Gymnotidae, within the order Gymnotiformes — the New-World electric knifefishes. These are bony fish, but unusual ones: nearly every species produces a weak electric organ discharge (EOD) that forms a private electric field around the body, used for electrolocation in dark or turbid water and for communication with other knifefish. Gymnotus is a pulse-type genus, discharging brief, separated pulses rather than the continuous hum produced by wave-type relatives such as the ghost knifefishes.
The genus Gymnotus is the most diverse in the order, with more than 37 valid described species, and the widespread nominal species Gymnotus carapo has in recent decades been split into many of these narrower-ranging forms, of which G. anguillaris is one. Despite the shared common name "knifefish", Gymnotiformes are not related to the Asian featherback or clown knifefishes (Chitala, Notopterus); the resemblance is convergent, not a matter of kinship. The Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the valid name.
Morphology
Gymnotus anguillaris has the classic banded-knifefish build: a long, laterally compressed, eel-like body marked with dark, irregular crossbands over a lighter ground colour, tapering to a fine point with no dorsal fin, no adipose fin, no pelvic fins and no true tail fin. Locomotion comes almost entirely from a very long anal fin running most of the length of the underside, which the fish throws into travelling waves to move forward or backward with equal ease. Reported maximum size is around 12 in standard length.
As in other gymnotids, an electric organ runs along the body and sensory pores across the skin read the field it produces, giving the fish an electrosensory picture of its surroundings that substitutes for vision in dark, cover-choked water. The species is scaleless, like all electric knifefishes, which leaves its skin more exposed than a scaled fish's and shapes how it must be handled and medicated in captivity.
Habitat
This species is native to northern South America, recorded from the Amazon and Orinoco river basins, including French Guiana. It is a benthopelagic freshwater fish of swamps and creeks with moderate flow, typically over bottoms of vegetation and plant debris rather than open sand or clear channel — the tangled, shaded cover that suits an animal navigating largely by electric sense rather than sight.
Water temperatures in its range run warm, roughly 22–30 degrees Celsius, and the swampy habitats it favours can run low in dissolved oxygen, particularly where vegetation decays and flow slows. Gymnotus as a genus copes with this by facultative air-breathing, gulping atmospheric air at the surface when needed — an adaptation shared with the handful of other Gymnotiformes, and the electric eel, that tolerate similarly oxygen-poor water.
Feeding
Gymnotus anguillaris is a nocturnal predator of aquatic invertebrates, taking insect larvae and crustaceans located largely by electrolocation in the dark, cover-dense water it inhabits. FishBase describes the species as relatively aggressive and notes it tends to live in small groups rather than as a solitary fish, though it still hunts and defends space individually after dark.
As with other banded knifefishes, prey is generally swallowed whole after being located and approached under cover of darkness; there is no evidence in the available sources of specialised feeding behaviour beyond this general predatory pattern typical of the genus. In captivity this predatory nature carries over directly: any tankmate small enough to be swallowed should be considered potential prey.

What is well established for the genus is the breeding structure that follows courtship: Gymnotidae show genuine parental care, unusual among fishes, with the male taking responsibility for a nest built ahead of spawning. Data specific to this species' mating behaviour is sparse.

Gymnotus species are known for male parental care, a distinctive trait within the order. The male builds and guards a nest — often a sheltered hollow among vegetation or a mass of floating debris — into which the female spawns, and he then guards the eggs and developing larvae through to independence. It is a nocturnal predator that should be given dim lighting and generous cover — pipes, roots, dense planting or floating debris analogues — to shelter in by day, emerging to hunt after dark.
FishBase notes the species as relatively aggressive and prone to living in small groups rather than as solitary individuals; tankmates should be chosen with care, avoiding fish small enough to be eaten and other territorial bottom-dwellers likely to clash with it. Its tolerance of low-oxygen water via facultative air-breathing makes it a hardy fish once established, but it is not a beginner's community fish, and captive-bred stock — where available — is preferable to wild-caught.

Gymnotus anguillaris is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Data Deficient, reflecting limited population and threat data across its Amazon and Orinoco range rather than any specific evidence of decline. Its distribution across major river basins in French Guiana and northern South America suggests a reasonably wide range, but detailed survey data appears sparse.
As with many gymnotiforms, the main pressures likely to affect populations in this part of its range are habitat change in swamps and floodplain creeks — drainage, deforestation and water-quality degradation — rather than any documented targeted exploitation. In the absence of a full assessment, the species' status should be read as unknown rather than assumed to be secure.
