Taxonomy & naming
Hypopomus artedi was described by Kaup in 1856 and belongs to the family Hypopomidae, the bluntnose knifefishes, within the order Gymnotiformes — the New-World electric knifefishes. Gymnotiformes are bony fish, but unusual ones: they are defined by an electric organ running along the body and a long ribbon-like anal fin used for propulsion, rather than by the fins and body plan of more typical aquarium fish. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the standing authority for the valid name and author citation.
Despite sharing the common name "knifefish", Hypopomus and its relatives are not related to the Asian featherback and clown knifefishes (Chitala, Notopterus), which belong to an entirely different order of bonytongues; the resemblance in body shape is convergent, not a sign of kinship. Within the Hypopomidae, Hypopomus is a small genus of soft-bodied, short-lived fish related to the better-known Brachyhypopomus, several of whose species have only recently been described and remain poorly documented — a pattern that also applies to H. artedi, for which detailed biology beyond distribution and size is sparse in the literature.
Morphology
Hypopomus artedi has the soft, elongated, laterally compressed body typical of the bluntnose knifefishes: a blunt, rounded snout, no dorsal fin, and a long anal fin running along most of the underside that provides essentially all of its propulsion, allowing it to move forward or backward with equal control. Recorded specimens reach around 19.5 in in standard length according to FishBase, though museum material is often much smaller — one documented specimen measured under 4 in, suggesting the species is typically encountered well short of its maximum reported size.
As in all gymnotiforms the body carries an electric organ running much of its length, paired with electroreceptor pores scattered over the skin that read the field it produces. The skin itself is scaleless and soft, a trait shared across the Hypopomidae and one with real consequences for how the fish must be kept. External sexual differences are not documented for this species.
Habitat
The species is recorded from the Amazon basin and the Guiana Shield tributaries, with confirmed occurrences in Argentina, Brazil, French Guiana, Guyana and Suriname. Its type locality, Igarapé-Açu, sits among the southern Guiana Shield tributaries of the Amazonas River. FishBase describes it as a freshwater, benthopelagic species of creeks with rapidly flowing water over sandy substrate — the clear, well-oxygenated headwater and tributary streams typical of the Guiana Shield rather than slow blackwater swamp.
Like other bluntnose and sand knifefishes it is a fish of structure and cover: leaf litter, root tangles and open sand where it can lie hidden by day. Its electric sense fits this life closely, letting it navigate and locate prey in dim, current-swept water where sight is of limited use, whether by day under cover or at night when it becomes active.
Feeding
Detailed dietary studies specific to Hypopomus artedi are not documented in the available literature, but its biology closely follows the pattern of the Hypopomidae as a group: a nocturnal predator of small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, worms and tiny crustaceans — picked out of sand, leaf litter and root tangles largely by electrolocation rather than sight. Aquarists keeping related species offer small meaty foods — bloodworm, chopped worms and similar frozen fare — fed in the evening; the same is a reasonable, cautious extrapolation for this species pending direct observation.

As in other Hypopomidae, the electric organ discharge in Hypopomus artedi is understood to function as a communication signal as well as a sensing tool — a pulse-type discharge whose pattern can carry information about species and possibly sex, used during encounters between fish in the dark. Courtship and pairing in the family is generally thought to unfold through this kind of electrical signalling combined with physical approach, rather than through visual display.

Given its wild habitat of fast, sandy, well-oxygenated creeks, a tank would need to replicate flowing water, a fine sand substrate for burrowing, dim lighting, and secure cover such as roots or leaf litter for daytime hiding, with feeding concentrated after dark. Any specimen encountered in the trade is very likely wild-caught rather than farmed, given how little is known about the species.
Conservation
Hypopomus artedi is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Least Concern, a status consistent with its fairly wide distribution across the Amazon basin and several Guiana Shield countries — Argentina, Brazil, French Guiana, Guyana and Suriname — which suggests the species is not currently thought to be under significant range-wide pressure.
As with many little-studied Neotropical stream fish, that broad-brush status sits alongside very little population-level data; specific threats to H. artedi are not documented in the available sources. Its dependence on clear, fast-flowing, sandy-bottomed creeks means it is the kind of species that could be affected by siltation, deforestation or damming of tributary streams within its range, even without direct evidence of decline to date.
