Taxonomy & naming
Iracema caiana was described by Triques in 1996 and placed in the family Rhamphichthyidae, the sand and tubesnout knifefishes, within the order Gymnotiformes — the New-World electric knifefishes. Like all gymnotiforms it is a bony fish but an unusual one, defined by an electric organ and a single long ribbon-like anal fin used for propulsion rather than a normal tail. The order is entirely South and Central American and has no relationship to the superficially similar Asian featherback and clown knifefishes (Chitala, Notopterus), which belong to a different order altogether.
The genus name Iracema honours the title character of José de Alencar's 1865 Brazilian novel Iracema, a literary heroine's name rather than a Latin or Greek descriptive term — a naming convention seen elsewhere among Brazilian-described gymnotiforms. The species epithet caiana has not been traced to a documented source and most likely references the Jauaperi River area from which the type series was collected. The Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the valid name; a formal redescription published in Neotropical Ichthyology (SciELO Brazil) remains the fullest technical account of the species.
Morphology
Iracema caiana reaches around 14 in in total length, based on the largest known specimen (14 in standard length in the redescription). The head carries a strongly concave profile just ahead of the eye, a shape shared with its sand-knifefish relatives and likely tied to a probing, snout-first way of searching for food. The tail ends in a small ovoid caudal appendage rather than a true fin.
As in other Rhamphichthyidae the anal fin is very long, here counted at roughly 240 to 257 rays, and it is this fin's travelling wave — not a tail — that drives the fish forward or backward. The pectoral fins carry 15 to 16 rays. Most distinctively, scales are absent across the front two-thirds of the body, appearing only, and only in reduced form, on the caudal appendage — an even more extreme version of the scalelessness seen across the order. Four rows of electrocytes have been documented above the rear portion of the anal fin, the tissue that generates the fish's weak electric discharge; the discharge itself has not been formally characterised for this species; but pulse-type signalling is the pattern expected of its family and is inferred here rather than measured.
Habitat
The species is known only from the Jauaperi River basin, a tributary of the Rio Negro within the Amazon system in Brazil — a single-river endemic in the fullest sense. It has not been reported from anywhere else, and only from Brazil among the countries of the region.
No ecological data accompanies the type collection: there is no published account of the specific microhabitat, water chemistry, or depth at which Iracema caiana was taken, beyond its placement within a blackwater Amazonian tributary system typical of the family — warm, soft, tannin-stained water where an electric sense outperforms eyesight. Its relatives in Rhamphichthyidae are generally nocturnal, sand- or leaf-litter-associated fish, and it is reasonable to expect a similar life among sediment and cover, but this is inference from the family rather than direct observation of the species.
Feeding
No diet has been documented for Iracema caiana. The redescription that forms the primary literature on this species explicitly notes the absence of behavioural and dietary data — it is known from preserved type specimens, not from field or aquarium observation.
By family pattern, Rhamphichthyidae with an elongated, downturned snout are understood to sift small invertebrates — worms, insect larvae and other benthic prey — from sand or leaf litter, locating them at night by electrolocation rather than sight. It is reasonable to expect Iracema caiana forages in a similar way given its concave, probing head shape, but this should be read as inference from its relatives, not as an established fact about the species itself.
Mating
Courtship and reproductive behaviour have not been documented for this species. Across the pulse-type Gymnotiformes generally, the electric organ discharge doubles as a social signal — used to advertise identity, sex and readiness to spawn, and to negotiate encounters with rivals or potential mates in the dark — and it is plausible that Iracema caiana courts in a broadly similar way. No direct observation of its mating behaviour, electric or otherwise, has been published.
Breeding
Breeding in Iracema caiana is entirely undocumented; the species is known only from a small type series and has apparently never been recollected, so nothing has been recorded about spawning site, season or parental care. Data is sparse to the point of absence.
What can be said comes from the wider Hypopomidae and Rhamphichthyidae, small pulse-type knifefishes whose breeding, where it has been studied at all, is a simple egg-scattering event among leaf litter, roots or sand — generally tied to the wet season — with little or no parental care afterwards. That pattern is offered here as family context, not as a confirmed account of this species.
In the aquarium
Iracema caiana is not established in the aquarium hobby; there is no record of it being kept, bred or traded, and its extreme rarity in the wild — a handful of specimens from a single river, never confidently recollected since its description — makes it very unlikely to appear in the trade at all. Any care guidance here would be speculation dressed as fact, and none is offered.
What can usefully be said is drawn from its close relatives in Rhamphichthyidae and Hypopomidae: small, delicate, scaleless, nocturnal fish that do best in dim, soft, gently acidic to neutral water over a fine sand substrate with leaf litter or root cover, and that are, like all gymnotiforms, sensitive to ammonia, nitrate and copper-based medications because they lack the protective scales most fish rely on. That is a description of the family's needs, not a tested protocol for this particular species.
Conservation
Iracema caiana is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List (2022). That rating sits oddly alongside its natural history: the species is known only from its original type series taken from the Jauaperi River, a Rio Negro tributary in the Brazilian Amazon, and appears not to have been recollected since — making it, by some accounts, the rarest member of its family. A Least Concern listing for a fish this poorly recorded likely reflects the absence of any documented, active threat to its habitat rather than confidence that the population is secure; it may equally reflect how easily a small, cryptic, sediment-dwelling knifefish escapes detection.
As a single-river endemic, Iracema caiana would be vulnerable to any degradation of the Jauaperi basin — deforestation, damming or pollution of the kind that threatens narrow-range Amazonian fishes generally — even though no specific pressure on this species has been documented. Its conservation story, at present, is mostly one of scientific rarity: a fish described once and essentially not seen again.
