Gymnorhamphichthys rosamariae was described by Schwassmann in 1989 in Studies on Neotropical Fauna and Environment, based on a holotype collected in the upper Rio Negro. The species epithet is a toponym — it references the place of collection on the upper Rio Negro rather than honouring a person — a naming pattern worth noting because it is easy to mistake for an eponym at a glance. The genus Gymnorhamphichthys sits in the family Rhamphichthyidae, the sand or tubesnout knifefishes, within the order Gymnotiformes, the New-World electric knifefishes.
Gymnotiformes are bony fish but unusual ones: nearly every species in the order generates a weak electric organ discharge (EOD) around its body, used for electrolocation — sensing prey, obstacles and other fish in dark or murky water — and for communication, since each species and sex carries a signature discharge.
