Taxonomy & naming
Japigny kirschbaum was described by Meunier, Jégu & Keith in Cybium in 2014 (the paper is dated in some records to 2011), erecting a new monospecific genus, Japigny, within the family Sternopygidae — the glass and rattail knifefishes — in the order Gymnotiformes, the New-World electric knifefishes. Gymnotiformes are bony fish, but unusual ones: nearly every species produces a weak electric organ discharge (EOD) that forms a private electric field around the body, used for electrolocation in murky or lightless water and for communication with other knifefish. Japigny kirschbaum is a wave-type species, producing the continuous, steady-frequency discharge typical of Sternopygidae, in contrast to the pulse-type discharges of families such as Gymnotidae.
The genus name honours the Japigny River, a tributary of the Approuague and the species' type locality; the species epithet honours Frank Kirschbaum of Humboldt University Berlin, a specialist in gymnotiform reproductive biology and aquaculture. Phylogenetic work places Japigny as the sister group to all other genera in the subfamily Eigenmanniinae — the earliest-diverging lineage in that group — distinguishing it from the superficially similar genus Distocyclus by skeletal characters including the number of precaudal vertebrae and anal-fin ray counts. As with all Gymnotiformes, Japigny kirschbaum is entirely unrelated to the Asian featherback and clown knifefishes (Chitala, Notopterus), whose knife-shaped body is a case of convergent evolution rather than kinship. The Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the valid name.
Morphology
Japigny kirschbaum reaches a modest maximum of about 8.5 in total length. The body is elongated and laterally compressed in the manner typical of Sternopygidae, brownish-dusky overall and marked with seven to eight dark and clear alternating wide vertical bands along its length. The head is triangular with a notably short snout — less than a third of head length — and a terminal mouth, features used alongside a scapular foramen to separate it from the closely related genus Distocyclus.
As in all sternopygids there is no dorsal fin and no functional tail fin; locomotion comes from a long anal fin — counted at 184 to 187 rays in the type description — run as a travelling wave that lets the fish move forward or backward with equal ease. The skeleton carries 13 to 14 precaudal vertebrae, one of the diagnostic counts separating the genus from its relatives. Like other gymnotiforms the body is scaleless, and an electric organ runs the length of the fish beneath the skin, paired with sensory pores that read the electric field it produces. No sexual dimorphism has been documented for this species.
Habitat
This species is a narrow-range endemic of French Guiana, known from the Approuague, Mana and Maroni river systems — a benthopelagic, tropical freshwater fish of the deeper channels and current-swept stretches of these Neotropical rivers. The type locality is the Japigny River itself, a tributary of the Approuague.
No specific temperature or pH data are documented for wild populations of Japigny kirschbaum in the available literature, but the family and region point strongly to warm, soft, tannin-stained blackwater to clearwater conditions typical of Guiana Shield rivers — dim, current-bearing water where an electric sense does the work eyes cannot. Data on this species' precise habitat preferences within those river systems remain sparse.
Feeding
Specific dietary data for Japigny kirschbaum have not been documented. By analogy with its family, it is almost certainly a nocturnal micro-predator, working over the substrate and among submerged cover after dark and locating small invertebrate prey largely by electrolocation rather than sight, in the manner well established for its relatives such as Eigenmannia and Sternopygus.
Nothing specific is recorded about feeding behaviour, prey preferences or foraging strategy for this species itself; any account beyond the family-level pattern would be speculation rather than documented fact.
Mating
As in other Sternopygidae, the wave-type electric organ discharge in Japigny kirschbaum is very likely central to social and reproductive signalling — in well-studied relatives such as Eigenmannia, discharge frequency differs between sexes and shifts during courtship interactions, and individuals recognise one another partly through these electrical signatures. Whether this pattern has been specifically documented in Japigny kirschbaum is not established in the available sources.
No courtship behaviour, spawning site selection, or pairing pattern has been recorded for this species. Data are sparse, and nothing beyond the family-level expectation of electric signalling during courtship can be stated with confidence.
Breeding
Japigny kirschbaum has not been documented breeding in captivity, and no aquarium population appears to exist. Data on its reproductive biology in the wild are also sparse; the family Sternopygidae as a whole are egg-layers that scatter adhesive eggs among plant roots or submerged vegetation, typically in warm, soft, higher-water conditions, with little or no parental care afterwards — a pattern well documented in the more accessible genus Eigenmannia but not confirmed specifically for Japigny.
Given the complete absence of aquarium-trade presence and the narrow, remote range of this species, it should be treated as effectively unbred and undocumented in captivity rather than assigned a specific breeding protocol.
In the aquarium
Japigny kirschbaum is not established in the aquarium hobby; it does not appear to be traded, and there is no record of hobbyist experience keeping it. Any care guidance must be inferred cautiously from its family. As a scaleless Gymnotiform it would be expected to share the group's general sensitivities — vulnerability to ammonia and nitrate, and the need for reduced doses of copper-based or otherwise harsh medications — along with a preference for dim lighting, secure cover, and warm, soft, current-bearing water reflecting its Guiana Shield river habitat.
Given the complete lack of husbandry data, this species is best regarded as a scientific curiosity rather than a candidate for the home aquarium at present. Anyone encountering it in the trade should treat it as wild-caught, narrow-range stock and weigh that against the pressure collection can place on a species restricted to just three river systems.
Conservation
Japigny kirschbaum is assessed by the IUCN as Vulnerable, under criterion B2ab(iii), an assessment dated December 2022. This reflects its very restricted range — confined to the Approuague, Mana and Maroni river systems of French Guiana — the classic profile of a narrow single-region endemic where localised habitat change carries outsized risk.
No specific threats are itemised in the sources reviewed, but for a Guiana Shield river endemic the general regional pressures are deforestation, mining-related sediment and mercury pollution, and damming, any of which could disproportionately affect a species with nowhere else to go. As a recently described, poorly known fish with no aquarium trade presence, its conservation story is really about protecting the rivers it lives in rather than any pressure from the hobby.
