Described in 2012 from the boulder-strewn rapids of the Approuague River in French Guiana, Peckoltia capitulata is one of the rarest loricariids known — a Critically Endangered catfish restricted to a single river system whose rapids are under direct threat from illegal gold mining. Its tiny area of occupancy and the ongoing degradation of its habitat make it among the most conservation-vulnerable plecos in the world.

Taxonomy & naming

Peckoltia capitulata was formally described by Fisch-Muller and Covain in 2012 in Cybium (volume 36, number 1, pages 163–193), as part of a comprehensive revision of Guianese loricariids. The type locality is the rapids of Saut Athanase on the Approuague River, at 4°11'12"N, 52°20'03"W, French Guiana. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the authority for the valid name Peckoltia capitulata Fisch-Muller & Covain, 2012.

The genus Peckoltia Miranda Ribeiro, 1912 belongs to the tribe Ancistrini within subfamily Hypostominae of Loricariidae. It was established to honour Gustavo Peckolt (1861–1923), a Brazilian-born German botanist and member of the Natural History Commission of Rondon. Peckoltia capitulata is distinguished from its Guianese congeners by a combination of molecular barcode data (GenBank JF747000) and morphological characters: a spotted pattern restricted to the posterior body with no spotting on the head, and a proportionally shorter head than most congeners (33.4–33.6% of SL). No L-number has been assigned to this species.

Morphology

Peckoltia capitulata reaches approximately 3 in standard length (SL). The body follows the typical loricariid plan: dorsoventrally flattened, encased in overlapping bony scutes, with a ventral suckermouth. The coloration pattern is diagnostically useful within the genus: spots are present on the posterior portion of the body and flanks but absent from the head — a combination that helps distinguish P. capitulata from other Guianese Peckoltia where spots may extend onto the head or be differently arranged.

The head is proportionally short for the genus, measuring 33.4–33.6% of standard length in type specimens. Dorsal fin formula includes 2 spines and 7 soft rays; the anal fin bears 5 soft rays. The body is elongated relative to some congeners. Sexual dimorphism follows the pattern typical of Ancistrini: males develop small odontodes on the leading pectoral-fin rays and along the posterior flank; females are broader-bodied behind the pectoral fins when viewed from above, a feature associated with gravid condition.

Habitat

Peckoltia capitulata is known exclusively from the Approuague River in French Guiana, a coastal river draining the northeastern Guiana Shield into the Atlantic Ocean. The type specimens were collected from Saut Athanase, a section of boulder-rapid habitat where the river descends over exposed granite outcrops — the coarse-grained geological substrate typical of Guiana Shield cataracts.

The water at the type locality is characterised by acidic, soft conditions: pH 5.0–6.4 and temperature 81–86 °F, consistent with the blackwater and clearwater drainages of the Guiana Highlands. Swift current at the rapids maintains high dissolved oxygen levels. Microhabitat within this environment consists of rock piles and submerged wood tangles — the structural refugia used by most loricariid catfishes in swift-water habitats. The Approuague ecoregion falls within the Coastal Rivers of the Guyanas freshwater ecoregion. Species co-occurring at Saut Athanase in the original description include Guyanancistrus brevispinis, Hypostomus gymnorhynchus, Harttia guianensis, Rineloricaria platyura, and Loricaria sp.

Feeding

No specific dietary data have been recorded for Peckoltia capitulata. Peckoltia species in general are omnivorous scavengers and biofilm grazers that use the ventral suckermouth to rasp algae, diatoms, and periphyton from rock surfaces, while also ingesting detritus and invertebrates associated with biofilm. In the swift-water rapids habitat of the Approuague, epilithic algal communities growing on exposed boulders would constitute the primary available food source.

PlanetCatfish notes that Peckoltia in general will accept a broad range of aquarium foods: algae wafers, sinking pellets, blanched vegetables, and occasional live or frozen invertebrates. Submerged wood and smooth rocks provide both rasping substrate and biofilm surface in the aquarium, and their provision is advisable for any Peckoltia.

Mating

No field or aquarium observations of mating behaviour in P. capitulata have been recorded. The species is not known to have been maintained in captivity. Within the tribe Ancistrini, to which Peckoltia belongs, males typically establish and defend territories around potential spawning sites — crevices, caves formed by boulder stacking, or gaps in submerged wood — and develop pronounced odontodes on the pectoral fins and body flanks during reproductive condition. Whether such behaviour occurs in P. capitulata is inferred from genus and tribe-level patterns, not direct observation.

Breeding

No breeding records exist for Peckoltia capitulata. PlanetCatfish lists no breeding reports for the species, and given its extreme rarity in both the wild and in collections, captive breeding has not been documented. Peckoltia are cave-spawning loricariids; by analogy with congeners that have been bred in aquaria, the species would be expected to deposit adhesive eggs within a defended cavity, with the male providing brood care through the incubation period.

The absence of any specimens in the ornamental trade means that captive-breeding programs for this species do not exist. Its IUCN status and habitat restrictions make any future collection for propagation purposes a sensitive conservation matter.

In the aquarium

Peckoltia capitulata is not available in the aquarium trade and is not known to be held in private collections. No husbandry data specific to this species have been published. The following is drawn entirely from what is known about its habitat and genus.

If specimens were ever available, the water chemistry at the type locality would serve as a baseline: pH 5.0–6.4, temperature 81–86 °F, soft water with high oxygen levels. Replicating the swift-water, boulder-rapid microhabitat in an aquarium would require strong circulation and smooth rock structure. PlanetCatfish notes that Peckoltia are generally peaceful and compatible with small fish, shrimp, and most cichlids other than very large species; they are not demanding in terms of tankmates.

The practical reality is that this species should not be sought for the hobby. Its extreme rarity, restricted range, and Critically Endangered status mean that any wild collection would be directly harmful to what may be a very small global population.

Conservation

Peckoltia capitulata is assessed as Critically Endangered (CR B2ab(iii)) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment conducted by Ballen (published 2021, assessment date 14 January 2021). The CR B2 criterion reflects an extremely small area of occupancy, estimated at 2–5 mi², with a single known location — the Approuague River — and continuing decline in habitat quality as required by the b(iii) sub-criterion.

The primary documented threat is illegal artisanal gold mining (garimpo) operating within and upstream of the Approuague catchment. Mining causes severe turbidity through sediment loading and introduces mercury and other contaminants through chemical processing of ore. At the time of the original species description in 2012, Fisch-Muller et al. noted mining activity was already detectable at the Saut Athanase collection site. The Approuague watershed has remained subject to intensive illegal mining pressure in subsequent years.

A nationally endemic species confined to rapids in a single river and subject to active habitat degradation, P. capitulata represents a severe conservation risk. No formal conservation actions for this species are documented. The rapids ecosystem at Saut Athanase — a granite cataract critical for multiple co-occurring endemic loricariids — has received no specific protection at the time of assessment. Its precarious situation underscores the broader vulnerability of Guiana Shield rapid-specialist fish to unregulated mining in French Guiana and adjacent Suriname.
