Microsternarchus javieri is a small, freshly-described electric knifefish from the Negro River basin of Brazilian Amazonia, formally named in 2025 and still too new to have picked up a common name in the hobby or the literature. Like all Gymnotiformes it swims by rippling a single long anal fin rather than a tail, has no scales, and carries a weak electric organ discharge (EOD) around its body that it uses to read the dark, leaf-littered water it lives in — sensing food, obstacles and other fish where eyes are of little help. Its discharge is a pulse type, fired in bursts of three alternating-polarity phases, and the describing team found the pattern differs measurably between males and females, making the species' electricity as much a social signal as a sensory one. At a modest 3–4.5 in, it is a slight, secretive fish of slow-flowing forest streams rather than an aquarium staple, and almost nothing is documented yet about keeping or breeding it away from its home water.

Taxonomy & naming

Microsternarchus javieri was described in 2025 by Pinilla, Cox Fernandes and Alves-Gomes, published in the Brazilian journal Acta Amazonica (hosted on SciELO). It belongs to the family Hypopomidae, the bluntnose knifefishes, within the tribe Microsternarchini and the order Gymnotiformes — the New-World electric knifefishes. Gymnotiformes are bony fish, but unusual ones: nearly every species produces a weak electric organ discharge (EOD) around its body, used for electrolocation in the dark and murky water most of them live in, and for communication between individuals. They swim by undulating a single long anal fin rather than a tail and lack scales altogether. The order is not related to the superficially similar Asian featherback and clown knifefishes (Chitala, Notopterus), which belong to an entirely different lineage of bony fish; the shared "knifefish" name reflects convergent body shape, not kinship.

The genus Microsternarchus was erected for small Hypopomidae distinguished by details of body depth, eye size and electric-organ anatomy; the type species is M. bilineatus. M. javieri is one of the more recently split-out congeners, described from specimens assigned to a distinct genetic lineage ("lineage C") within what had been treated as a single wide-ranging species, alongside the similarly new M. schonmanni from the Mamoré–Guaporé basin further south. As with all such splits, the Catalog of Fishes is the reference for the currently accepted name; because the species was named in 2025, downstream databases and field guides may take time to catch up.

Morphology

Microsternarchus javieri is a small, slender pulse-type knifefish, reaching roughly 3–4.5 in in total length in the type series. Like other Hypopomidae it has a bluntly rounded snout rather than the elongated, tube-like snout of its sand-knifefish relatives in Rhamphichthyidae, and a body that is only moderately compressed — the describing paper records a maximum body depth of about 8 to 10 percent of the length to the anal-fin origin, notably shallower than its close relative M. bilineatus, which the authors used as one of the characters separating the two species alongside differences in eye diameter.

As in all gymnotiforms, there is no dorsal fin and no true tail fin; locomotion comes from a long anal fin run as a travelling wave along the underside of the body, letting the fish move forwards or backwards with equal ease. The skin is scaleless and carries the electroreceptor pores that read the fish's own electric field. That field is produced by an electric organ running along the body and discharged as a pulse — in this species, a distinctive burst of three alternating-polarity phases rather than the continuous hum of a wave-type fish like the ghost knifefishes. The describing team found the fine structure of this pulse differs between the sexes, the clearest sexual dimorphism so far documented in the species.

Habitat

The type locality is Igarapé Aduiá, a small forest stream in the Negro River basin near 0°24'S, 63°19'W in Amazonas state, Brazil — squarely within the blackwater heart of the central Amazon. Specimens were taken from well-oxygenated stretches with slow to moderate current, at shallow depths of roughly 1–5 ft during the dry season, in water measured at 79–85 °F and a strongly acidic pH of 4.41–5.58, typical of Rio Negro blackwater chemistry.

Within those streams the fish favours cover: areas thick with submerged dead leaves, fine roots and other vegetation debris, where it can hide by day and forage largely out of sight of predators and eyes-based hunters alike. This is exactly the kind of low-visibility microhabitat where an electric sense earns its keep — dim, tannin-stained, structurally cluttered water in which electrolocation, not vision, is the more reliable way to find food and avoid obstacles.

Feeding

No feeding study specific to Microsternarchus javieri has been published; the description paper is a taxonomic account, not an ecological one. What can be said follows from its family and habitat: like other small Hypopomidae, it is presumed to be a nocturnal micropredator of the leaf litter and root tangles it inhabits, taking small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, worms and similar benthic prey — located largely by electrolocation rather than sight, in water too dark and turbid for vision to do much work.

Nothing is documented about its feeding behaviour or diet in captivity, since the species has no established aquarium history. Data sparse.

Mating

Courtship biology has not been studied in this species specifically, but the description paper's finding of sex-linked differences in the pulse discharge is itself a mating-relevant clue: in pulse-type Hypopomidae and their relatives, the electric organ discharge doubles as a social signal, and where such sexual dimorphism in EOD structure exists it is generally read as playing a role in mate recognition or courtship signalling between individuals meeting in the dark. Beyond that inference, no observations of courtship behaviour, spawning approach or pairing have been published for M. javieri.

As with the wider family, egg-laying reproduction with little or no pair bonding is the working assumption, but this is inference from relatives, not a documented account for this species.

Breeding

Breeding in Microsternarchus javieri is undocumented — the species was only described in 2025, from field-collected specimens, and there is no record of it having been kept or bred in captivity. Within Hypopomidae generally, where breeding has been observed at all, these small pulse-type knifefish are egg-layers that scatter or deposit eggs among leaf litter, roots or fine sediment, typically tied to seasonal (often wet-season) triggers, with little to no parental care afterward.

For this species specifically that mode can only be inferred from its relatives, not confirmed. Data sparse; prefer "unknown" over any invented protocol.

In the aquarium

Microsternarchus javieri has no established aquarium history and is not known to be in the ornamental trade; everything here is inference from its biology and from the general care needs of small Hypopomidae, not from hobbyist experience with this species. Were it to be kept, the working assumptions would be: warm, soft, strongly acidic, dimly lit blackwater conditions matching its Rio Negro origin, a sand or fine substrate with abundant leaf litter and root cover to hide in by day, and tankmates chosen with care, since as a nocturnal electrolocating predator it is unlikely to be safe with very small fish or shrimp after dark.

Being scaleless, like all gymnotiforms it should be assumed sensitive to ammonia and nitrate, and to copper-based or harsh medications, which call for reduced dosing. Given its tiny original range and total absence from captive collections, any aquarist encountering this species should treat it as a scientific rarity rather than an accessible pet, and captive-bred stock does not exist to recommend.

Conservation

Microsternarchus javieri has not yet been assessed by the IUCN Red List; as a species named in 2025 it carries no formal conservation status (Not Evaluated). Its known range is presently limited to the type locality and immediate vicinity in the Negro River basin of Amazonas, Brazil, though the describing survey's method — resolving what had been treated as a single wide-ranging Microsternarchus into distinct genetic lineages — suggests the true range may extend further once other Amazonian populations are examined with the same genetic tools.

As with many recently split Amazonian fish, the practical conservation picture depends on how narrow its range turns out to be: species restricted to a handful of blackwater streams are more exposed to habitat degradation, deforestation and mining-linked pollution than the broadly distributed Hypopomidae species with which they were once lumped. No specific threats have been documented for this species; an assessment awaits further fieldwork.
