Taxonomy & naming
Microsternarchus schonmanni was described in 2024 by Cox Fernandes, Keeffe & Pinilla in the Proceedings of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia, placing it in the family Hypopomidae (the bluntnose knifefishes) within the tribe Microsternarchini, alongside the genera Procerusternarchus and Racenisia. Hypopomidae sits within the order Gymnotiformes, the New-World electric knifefishes — bony fish, but unusual ones, defined by an electric organ and a single long anal fin used for propulsion rather than a dorsal or tail fin. The genus Microsternarchus was erected by Eigenmann in 1912 and previously held two described species, M. bilineatus and M. brevis, both small bottom-dwelling fish of similar build.
The holotype was collected from the Guaporé River near Costa Marques, Rondônia, Brazil, and the species and its close relatives are restricted to the Mamoré–Guaporé system, a major tributary arm of the Madeira drainage within the wider Amazon basin. As with all valid Gymnotiformes names, the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the reference point for the accepted name and synonymy; being a 2024 description, the taxonomic record here is still very fresh and largely limited to the original paper.
Morphology
Microsternarchus schonmanni is a small fish: the holotype, an adult male, measured 3.5 in in total length, in keeping with the modest size typical of the genus (related species run roughly 2–3.5 in TL). The body plan follows the family pattern — scaleless, laterally compressed, with a blunt, rounded snout (the trait behind the common group name "bluntnose knifefishes") rather than the elongated probing snout seen in the sand knifefishes of Rhamphichthyidae. There is no dorsal fin and no distinct tail fin; locomotion comes from a long anal fin run as a travelling wave along the underside of the body, letting the fish move forward or backward with equal control.
As in other Microsternarchini, the species produces a pulse-type electric organ discharge (EOD) rather than the continuous wave-type signal of groups like Apteronotus — a series of brief, discrete pulses (roughly 5–11 milliseconds each in the tribe) that is unusually stable in timing. That discharge is read back by electroreceptors scattered over the skin, giving the fish a private sense of its immediate surroundings even in complete darkness. Beyond the measurements and diagnostic features given in the type description, external sexual differences and full morphological variation across the species are not yet documented.
Habitat
The known range of Microsternarchus schonmanni is the Mamoré–Guaporé River basin, a large tributary system of the Madeira River within the Amazon basin, straddling the Brazil–Bolivia border; the type locality is the Guaporé River at Costa Marques Municipality, Rondônia, Brazil. As a narrow-range basin endemic — at least as currently documented — it is not known from elsewhere in South America.
Members of the Microsternarchini and Hypopomidae more broadly are cryptic, nocturnal fish of shallow, structurally complex habitats: leaf litter accumulations, submerged root tangles and sandy margins of warm, soft, acidic blackwater-influenced rivers and streams, often in water in the roughly 79–86 °F range with pH well down in the acidic range. Fine-scale habitat data specific to M. schonmanni has not yet been published beyond the collection record, so this picture is drawn from the genus and family pattern rather than confirmed site-by-site observation.
Feeding
No diet has been published for Microsternarchus schonmanni specifically. Hypopomid knifefishes in general are nocturnal predators of small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, worms and tiny crustaceans picked from leaf litter and sediment — located largely by electrolocation rather than sight, since these fish are active after dark in turbid or shaded water where vision is of limited use.
Given the consistency of this feeding mode across the tribe and family, it is a reasonable inference for M. schonmanni, but it has not been directly observed or recorded for this species and should be treated as data sparse rather than established fact.
Mating
Courtship and spawning behaviour have not been documented for Microsternarchus schonmanni. In gymnotiforms generally, and in pulse-type species like this one in particular, the electric organ discharge doubles as a social signal — each fish's pulse pattern can carry information about species, sex and individual identity, and interactions between fish (including courtship approaches) are thought to involve exchanges of these electric signals in the dark alongside physical contact.
Nothing published for this species confirms discharge-based courtship directly; this is inferred from what is known of the wider pulse-type Hypopomidae and Microsternarchini, and should be read as a plausible mechanism rather than a documented one for M. schonmanni.
Breeding
Breeding biology for Microsternarchus schonmanni is undescribed — the species is known only from its 2024 type description and associated specimens, with no published account of spawning, eggs or young. Data sparse.
Across the wider Hypopomidae, where breeding has been observed at all it typically involves egg-scattering among leaf litter, roots or fine sediment, generally timed to the wet season, with little or no parental care afterward. There is no basis in the current literature to state a confirmed breeding mode, egg count or care pattern for this species, and none is claimed here; any account of M. schonmanni breeding in captivity would be a first record.
In the aquarium
Microsternarchus schonmanni is not established in the aquarium trade — it is a very recently described species known from scientific collections rather than the hobby, and no aquarium husbandry has been published for it. Anyone encountering it would be working from the general Hypopomidae/bluntnose-knifefish playbook rather than species-specific guidance.
That playbook, based on close relatives, calls for warm, soft, acidic, dimly-lit water with sand or fine substrate and generous cover — leaf litter, roots or similar structure the fish can hide in by day, since these are nocturnal, light-shy fish. Being scaleless, Hypopomidae are sensitive to ammonia and nitrate, and require reduced doses of copper-based or other harsh medications. Given their small size and predatory, electrolocation-driven hunting at night, they are not a safe choice alongside bite-sized fish or shrimp. In the near-total absence of species-specific care data, any specimen encountered should be treated cautiously and, given the freshness of the description, is far more likely to be seen in scientific collections than for sale.
Conservation
Microsternarchus schonmanni has not yet been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List; as a species described in 2024 it currently falls outside the assessment cycle, and its status here is recorded as Data Deficient pending review. No population trend, abundance estimate or specific threat has been published for this species.
As a narrow-range endemic of the Mamoré–Guaporé basin — so far as is currently documented — it would share the general vulnerabilities of single-basin Amazonian fish: habitat alteration, deforestation, and water-quality pressure from mining and agricultural runoff in the wider Madeira drainage. None of these pressures has been specifically linked to this species in the literature, and this should be read as general context for the region rather than a documented threat to M. schonmanni.
