Orthosternarchus tamandua, the tamandua knifefish, is a ghostly, whitish-pink apteronotid that lives out its life in the deep, dark channels of the Amazon rather than in the shallows most aquarium knifefish come from. Like its relatives it has no dorsal fin and no true tail, moving forwards and backwards on the ripple of one long anal fin, and it navigates the near-total darkness of its habitat with a weak electric field generated around its body — sensing prey, obstacles and other fish by how they distort that field rather than by sight. Its long, tubular, almost trunk-like snout and tiny asymmetrical eyes are built for a life spent 6 to 10 metres down in open river channels, well below where light penetrates. It is rarely seen in the aquarium trade, a genuine deep-water specialist rather than a beginner's fish.

Taxonomy & naming

Orthosternarchus tamandua was described by George Albert Boulenger in 1898 and is the only species in its genus, placed in the family Apteronotidae — the ghost knifefishes — within the order Gymnotiformes, the New-World electric knifefishes. Like all gymnotiforms it is a bony fish but an unusual one: the order is defined by an electric organ and a long ribbon-like anal fin used for propulsion, features that set it apart from almost every other freshwater aquarium fish. The Apteronotidae are distinguished within Gymnotiformes by an electric organ built from modified nerve cells rather than muscle tissue, giving them the fastest, most refined electric discharges of any knifefish family.

The common name "knifefish" is shared with the Asian featherback and clown knifefishes (Chitala, Notopterus), but those are bonytongues in an entirely different order — the resemblance is convergent body shape, not relatedness. A comprehensive redescription by Hilton and colleagues in 2007, published in the Proceedings of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia, re-examined the holotype and detailed the species' external morphology, osteology, electric organ discharge and ecology. The Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the valid name.

Morphology

The tamandua knifefish is instantly distinctive even among ghost knifefishes: instead of the matte black of the familiar black ghost, it is a pale whitish-pink over its whole body, an adaptation to a life spent far from any light. Its most striking feature is a long, tubular, downturned snout — reminiscent of the anteater (tamandua) it is named for — tipped with a small mouth, and paired with tiny, bilaterally asymmetrical eyes that reflect how little use vision is at depth. As in other apteronotids there is no dorsal fin and no functional tail fin; the fish is propelled by a single long anal fin run in travelling waves, letting it move forwards and backwards with equal ease.

The holotype, held at the Natural History Museum in London, measures 16.5 in in total length (with a regenerated tail), and specimens in the 8–12 in range are more typical of what turns up in trawls and occasional trade. The skin is scaleless and unprotected, a trait shared across the order that makes the species sensitive to poor water quality and to many medications. Running the length of the body is the electric organ; the species produces a wave-type discharge in the range of roughly 450–605 Hz, with a distinctive head-negative monophasic waveform described by Hilton et al. as unique among the apteronotids studied.

Habitat

Orthosternarchus tamandua is an Amazon basin endemic, recorded from Brazil and Peru, with its type locality at the Rio Juruá. It has turned up in major tributaries including the Rio Negro, Rio Purus, the middle and lower Madeira, the Rio Branco and the main Amazonas channel itself, in both blackwater and whitewater rivers — its tolerance of both water types is unusual among river specialists that often stick to one or the other.

What unites all these records is depth rather than a particular river chemistry: this is a deep-channel fish, typically encountered 20–33 ft down and recorded to nearly 66 ft, well below where light reaches. That is a very different niche from the shallow, root-tangled margins favoured by better-known ghost knifefishes like the black ghost, and it is the main reason the species is so rarely seen — it lives where nets and aquarium collectors do not usually reach. In water that dark, an electric sense is not a supplement to eyesight but essentially the primary way of perceiving the world.

Feeding

As a nocturnal, deep-channel predator, the tamandua knifefish almost certainly hunts small invertebrates and other prey using electrolocation in water far too dark for vision to matter, in keeping with the feeding strategy documented across the ghost knifefishes. Its long, tubular snout suggests a probing, close-quarters style of foraging suited to picking prey from crevices or sediment rather than open-water pursuit, though detailed dietary studies specific to this species are not available in the sources reviewed here — data sparse.

In the aquarium trade, retailers describe it as a slow, cautious feeder that can be delicate to establish, typically requiring live foods such as bloodworm or blackworm at first before it can be persuaded onto frozen alternatives. Given its scaleless skin and specialised deep-water background, new imports need a settled, quiet tank and patience rather than an expectation of immediate feeding.

Mating

As in other apteronotids, the wave-type electric organ discharge very likely carries information about identity, sex and readiness to spawn, and courtship in this genus can be expected to involve an exchange of electric signals in the dark rather than visual display — a pattern well documented in the related, more accessible brown ghost (Apteronotus leptorhynchus). Whether O. tamandua shows the same frequency-shifting "duet" behaviour recorded in that species has not been specifically studied; this is an inference from family-level biology rather than a direct observation of this species.

Beyond that inference, essentially nothing has been published on courtship behaviour in the tamandua knifefish itself. Its deep-channel habitat makes direct observation difficult, and the species is not established in aquaculture or the aquarium trade in any capacity that would have generated breeding records — data sparse.

Breeding

Orthosternarchus tamandua is presumed to be an egg-layer, consistent with the reproductive mode documented across the Apteronotidae, but no breeding has been reported or is remotely likely in home aquaria. Every specimen reaching the trade is wild-caught from deep Amazon channels; there is no farmed or hormone-induced production of this species as exists for some other gymnotiforms.

No parental care has been documented, again consistent with the family pattern of eggs scattered among cover with no subsequent guardianship. For this species, the honest position is that its breeding biology is essentially unstudied in the wild and entirely unattempted in captivity — poorly documented rather than describable in any detail.

In the aquarium

This is a specialist's fish, not a community-tank option, and it is rarely imported precisely because it comes from open water 20–33 ft down rather than the accessible shallows most collected knifefish inhabit. Retailer profiles recommend a large, dimly lit aquarium with open swimming space rather than a heavily furnished one — closer to its natural deep-channel habitat than the root-and-cave setup suited to shallow-water ghost knifefishes — with soft, near-neutral to slightly acidic water in the pH 6.2–7.2 range and warm temperatures of roughly 73–82 °F (74–82°F). A tank of at least several hundred litres has been suggested by specialist retailers, reflecting the eventual size and the fish's need for calm, open water rather than clutter.

Because it is scaleless, it shares the whole order's sensitivity to ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and to copper-based or otherwise harsh medications, which should be avoided or heavily reduced. New arrivals are reported to be delicate feeders that need live foods to start and a quiet, low-disturbance tank to settle in. It is not compatible with small fish or shrimp, which it will hunt after dark, and given its rarity and specialised needs it is best considered an advanced-keeper fish rather than a first knifefish.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Orthosternarchus tamandua as Least Concern in 2018, reflecting its wide range across major Amazon tributaries in both Brazil and Peru and the absence of evidence for population decline. Its deep-channel habitat also affords it a degree of practical protection from the pressures — deforestation, riverside development, targeted overfishing — that more directly threaten shallow-water and floodplain species.

That said, the species is poorly surveyed precisely because of where it lives, and broader Amazon basin threats such as damming, mercury contamination from mining, and habitat disturbance are relevant to the wider ecosystem it depends on even if no species-specific decline has been documented. Its rarity in the aquarium trade means collection pressure is negligible; the more meaningful conservation story for this fish is the health of the Amazon's deep river channels as a whole.
