Taxonomy & naming
Platyurosternarchus crypticus was described by de Santana and Vari in 2009 in a revision of the genus Platyurosternarchus, published in the journal Copeia. It belongs to the family Apteronotidae, the ghost knifefishes, within the order Gymnotiformes — the New-World electric knifefishes. Gymnotiformes are bony fish but an unusual lineage: they are defined by an electric organ and a long ribbon-like anal fin used for propulsion, and they are entirely restricted to fresh water in Central and South America. The Apteronotidae are distinguished within the order by an electric organ built from modified nerve cells rather than muscle tissue, which produces a fast, continuous wave-type discharge — among the highest-frequency electric signals of any fish.
The genus Platyurosternarchus was until 2009 treated as containing essentially one widespread species, P. macrostoma; de Santana and Vari's revision split it, recognizing P. crypticus as a distinct species restricted to the upper Rio Branco system. The two species are separated by details of the laterosensory canals on the underside of the head and preopercle, by how far back the mid-dorsal electroreceptive filament extends, and by branchiostegal ray structure — differences fine enough, and the fish obscure enough, that the epithet crypticus ("hidden, concealed") was chosen for how long it went unrecognized as separate. As with all Gymnotiformes, these New-World electric knifefishes are unrelated to the Asian featherback and clown knifefishes (Chitala, Notopterus); the similar knife-shaped body is convergent, not a sign of kinship. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the taxonomic authority for the valid name.
Morphology
Platyurosternarchus crypticus reaches a recorded maximum of about 12 in total length. Like other ghost knifefishes it has a laterally compressed, blade-like body, no dorsal fin, and no distinct caudal fin; a long anal fin runs along most of the underside and is thrown into travelling waves for both forward and backward swimming. A slender fleshy filament runs along the dorsal midline, carrying part of the electroreceptor array the family uses to read its own electric field — in this species that filament's posterior extent, and the fine anatomy of the head's sensory canals, are the very features that distinguish it from its close relative P. macrostoma. The skin is scaleless, as in all Gymnotiformes.
Running the length of the body beneath the skin is the electric organ itself, which generates a continuous, high-frequency wave-type discharge. This field is projected around the fish and read by electroreceptors covering the head and body, letting it sense obstacles, prey and other fish in the dark, sediment-laden water it inhabits without relying on vision. Detailed data on coloration, sexual size differences, and other external features are not documented for this species beyond the original taxonomic description; specific dimorphism has not been reported.
Habitat
The species is known from the upper Rio Branco system in the Amazon basin, in northeastern Roraima state, Brazil, and across the border in the Rupununi District of Guyana. The type locality is Moco-Moco Creek, a clear forest stream with tannin-stained water flowing over gravel and cobble, its banks littered with leaf litter — habitat FishBase describes generally as rapids and streams running through clear forest.
This is a narrow-range endemic of a single upper-basin river system rather than a continent-spanning species, and like other ghost knifefishes it appears to favor flowing, oxygenated water over still backwaters. The tannin-stained, dimly lit conditions typical of this habitat are exactly the setting in which an electric sense outperforms eyesight, and the family's electrolocation ability is thought to have evolved for hunting and navigating in water of just this kind.
Feeding
FishBase lists Platyurosternarchus crypticus as a predator, presumably feeding on invertebrates, consistent with the diet documented across the ghost knifefishes more broadly — aquatic insect larvae, worms and small crustaceans picked out of sediment and leaf litter, typically after dark. As in other Apteronotidae, prey is likely located largely through electrolocation rather than vision, with the fish's electric field revealing the presence of small animals hidden in the substrate or among cover.
No specific feeding studies or aquarium feeding records exist for this species; its diet in the wild is inferred from its family and its predatory dentition rather than from direct observation, and this should be treated as data sparse.
Mating
Nothing specific has been published on courtship behaviour in Platyurosternarchus crypticus. Across the ghost knifefishes generally, the wave-type electric organ discharge functions as a social signal as well as a sensing tool, carrying information about a fish's identity, sex and reproductive state; in the best-studied relatives, males and females shift their discharge frequency toward one another during courtship in an electrical exchange. It is reasonable to expect a broadly similar role for electric signalling in this species' courtship, but this has not been documented directly and should not be taken as established for P. crypticus specifically.
Breeding
No breeding or spawning behaviour has been recorded for Platyurosternarchus crypticus, in the wild or in captivity — it is not established in the aquarium trade and appears to be effectively unknown outside its original taxonomic description. Ghost knifefishes as a family are egg-layers that scatter eggs among cover such as roots and plants, with no substantial parental care documented in the group, but a specific breeding mode for this species is data sparse and should not be assumed. FishBase records no breeding data for the species.
In the aquarium
Platyurosternarchus crypticus has no meaningful presence in the aquarium hobby; it is a rarely collected, narrow-range river fish known mainly from taxonomic and museum material rather than from the trade. Were it to be kept, the general husbandry principles for ghost knifefishes would apply: it is scaleless and so unusually sensitive to ammonia, nitrate, and to copper-based or otherwise harsh medications, which should be avoided or heavily reduced. As a fish of clear, flowing forest streams and rapids, it would need well-oxygenated, dimly lit water with cover to retreat into by day, and — as an electroreceptive nocturnal predator — should not be assumed safe with small tankmates. None of this is documented from actual aquarium experience with the species; it is inference from its family and habitat, not a tested care regime.
Conservation
Platyurosternarchus crypticus is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Least Concern, last evaluated in November 2018. As a single-river-system endemic restricted to the upper Rio Branco basin straddling Brazil and Guyana, its overall range is narrow even though its current conservation status is not one of concern; species confined to a single headwater system are generally more exposed to localized pressures such as habitat change, deforestation and water-quality decline than continent-wide species would be. No specific threats to this species have been documented beyond its narrow known range.
