The largest known bristlenose pleco, Ancistrus maximus reaches 8 in standard length — more than twice the size of the familiar common bristlenose — and comes from the remote rio Branco drainage of Roraima, Brazil. Long known to the aquarium trade under the provisional codes L110 and L157 before its formal description in 2015, it combines the classic Ancistrus temperament with the footprint of a mid-sized pleco.

Taxonomy & naming

Ancistrus maximus was formally described by de Oliveira, Zuanon, Zawadzki and Rapp Py-Daniel in 2015 in Ichthyological Explorations of Freshwaters (volume 26, number 1, pages 73–82), from type specimens collected at Macoari stream, a right-bank tributary of the rio Branco, Roraima State, Brazil. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the valid combination Ancistrus maximus de Oliveira, Zuanon, Zawadzki & Rapp Py-Daniel, 2015.

Before formal description, the species circulated in the European and North American aquarium trade under two independently assigned provisional codes: L110, assigned by the German magazine DATZ to fish imported from Roraima, and L157, assigned by the same publication to a second importation that was later unified with L110 on closer examination. Upon the formal 2015 description both codes were synonymised under A. maximus. The common name 'Red Spot Bristlenose' refers to the reddish-orange spots on the dark body.

A. maximus belongs to genus Ancistrus (Kner, 1854), one of the species-richest genera in the family Loricariidae, placed within the subfamily Hypostominae and tribe Ancistrini. The name maximus is Latin for 'largest' — an explicit reference to this being the largest known species of Ancistrus at the time of its description.

Morphology

FishBase records a maximum standard length of 8 in SL — PlanetCatfish similarly cites 8 in SL — making A. maximus the largest confirmed species of Ancistrus and notably larger than the well-known common bristlenose (A. cirrhosus group, typically 4–5 in SL).

The overall body colouration, as described from preserved and live material, is dark brown to near-black with a covering of reddish-orange spots across the flanks, dorsum, and fins. This spotted pattern is the basis for the trade name 'Red Spot Bristlenose' and distinguishes it visually from plain-coloured or vermiculated Ancistrus. The body is strongly dorsoventrally flattened, armoured in overlapping keeled plates in the typical loricariid fashion, with a prominent ventrally positioned suctorial mouth.

As with all Ancistrus, mature males bear conspicuous branched tentacles on the snout and rostral plate — in a species of this size, these can be particularly striking. Females typically have reduced or absent rostral tentacles. Interopercular odontodes are well developed in breeding males. No published data on clutch dimorphism or fin ray counts specific to A. maximus are readily available beyond the 2015 description.

Habitat

The type locality is Macoari stream, a right-bank tributary of the rio Branco, near Rorainópolis, Roraima State, Brazil (approximately 1°09'12.1"S, 61°50'40.8"W). GBIF occurrence data confirm the known range is concentrated in Roraima State, with the species recorded from the rio Branco drainage and the middle and lower rio Negro.

The rio Branco is a major northern tributary of the rio Negro, itself a great blackwater tributary of the Amazon. The rio Negro drainage is characterised by extremely soft, acidic, tea-coloured water with very low conductivity and mineral content — a product of organic acids leached from decaying forest leaf litter. The smaller tributary streams such as Macoari, however, may have somewhat different water chemistry depending on local geology and canopy cover.

No specific water temperature, pH, or conductivity measurements from the collection locality are recorded in available sources. The broader region lies in the equatorial Amazon, with year-round warm temperatures and strong seasonal flood pulse.

Feeding

No published data specific to the wild diet of A. maximus are available. The species is expected to be a periphyton grazer and biofilm feeder in the manner of other Ancistrus — rasping algae, diatoms, and associated detritus from hard substrates including rock, submerged wood, and leaf litter, using its fine comb-like teeth and suctorial mouth.

In the aquarium, PlanetCatfish keepers report the species accepts the standard Ancistrus diet: high-quality algae wafers, spirulina-based tablets, and blanched vegetables including courgette, cucumber, and sweet potato. Driftwood is recommended as a behavioural and dietary supplement. Given the likely blackwater origin in the rio Negro system, some keepers of rio Negro species supplement with leaf litter (Indian almond, oak) to acidify the water and provide natural grazing surface. Protein-rich foods can be offered in small quantities.

Mating

No field observations of mating behaviour in A. maximus are on record. Based on general Ancistrus biology and the reports of aquarium keepers, mating is expected to follow the genus pattern: males defend territories centred on a preferred spawning cave, displaying their snout tentacles during male–male encounters, and coaxing conditioned females into the prepared cavity.

The relatively large body size of A. maximus compared to most bristlenoses means that cave dimensions must be correspondingly generous — a narrow ceramic tube suited to a common bristlenose will likely be rejected by an adult A. maximus. Large sections of hollow driftwood or oversized breeding caves are appropriate. Males may become strongly territorial and should not be kept with other male Ancistrus in confined quarters.

Breeding

No confirmed captive breeding reports for A. maximus are documented in the hobbyist literature reviewed. Eight keepers are registered on PlanetCatfish but no breeding accounts have been filed. Based on Ancistrus reproductive biology, the species is a cave spawner with paternal brood care: the male selects and defends a hollow or crevice, the female lays adhesive eggs on the cave interior, and the male takes sole responsibility for fanning and guarding the clutch until the fry disperse.

The larger body size of A. maximus relative to typical bristlenoses may correspond to larger clutch sizes, longer incubation, or longer parental-care periods, but no data exist to confirm this. Conditioning on a varied vegetable-rich diet with regular water changes and a slight temperature dip to simulate seasonal cool-down are the standard triggers used for other Ancistrus.

In the aquarium

Ancistrus maximus is an uncommon species in the hobby. Imports have occurred from Roraima under the L110 and L157 codes, but it is not regularly available in trade. Its adult size — approximately 8 in SL, considerably larger than the common bristlenose — means it requires more space than beginners typically anticipate from an 'Ancistrus'.

A single adult requires a minimum of 40–55 US gal, with ample horizontal swimming space and multiple large caves or hollow wood sections. The rio Negro / rio Branco biogeographic origin suggests a preference for soft, warm, acidic water: temperature approximately 75–82 °F, pH 5.5–6.8, and very low hardness would reflect natural conditions. Peat filtration or the use of RO water with appropriate reconstitution can be used to approach these parameters, though the species may tolerate somewhat harder and more neutral water in practice.

Like other Ancistrus, A. maximus is generally peaceful toward unrelated species and is safe in a community with fish that will not be intimidated by a substantial pleco. Males are territorial toward other Ancistrus and should not be housed together without a very large tank. Given its rarity, any captive breeding success would be a meaningful contribution to the hobby's sustainable supply.

Conservation

Ancistrus maximus has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List. Its known range is limited to the rio Branco and middle to lower rio Negro drainages in Roraima State, Brazil — a relatively remote region of the Brazilian Amazon that, while not heavily impacted at present, faces growing pressure from agricultural expansion, deforestation, and associated sedimentation.

The formal description of A. maximus in 2015 provided the taxonomic foundation necessary for any future conservation assessment. No abundance data, population estimates, or trend information are available. As the largest known species of Ancistrus, any significant reduction in wild populations would be of particular concern for the genus.
