Taxonomy & naming
Steatogenys elegans was described by Franz Steindachner in 1880 and belongs to the family Rhamphichthyidae, the sand knifefishes, within the order Gymnotiformes — the New-World electric knifefishes. Like every gymnotiform, it is a bony fish set apart from ordinary aquarium fish by a true electric organ and by a body plan built around a single long anal fin rather than a conventional set of paired swimming fins. Nearly all Gymnotiformes generate a weak electric organ discharge (EOD) around themselves, used both to electrolocate — sensing prey, obstacles and other fish in dark or turbid water where eyes are of little use — and to communicate, since each species and sex carries a recognisable discharge signature.
The genus name Steatogenys comes from the Greek steatos, hard fat, and genys, jaw, a reference to the fish's fleshy, blunt-snouted head. The genus holds three closely related, zebra-striped species that are told apart chiefly by the colour of the anal fin: S. elegans has a colourless anal fin, S. duidae a marbled one, and S. ocellatus a dark anal fin with pale spots along the body. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the authority for the valid name. Despite the shared common name, knifefishes of this order are not related to the Asian featherback or clown knifefishes (Chitala, Notopterus); the resemblance is convergent, not a matter of kinship.
Morphology
Steatogenys elegans is a slender, laterally compressed fish reaching around 8 in in total length, banded along the flanks in the alternating dark and pale zebra pattern shared by its two close relatives, with a colourless anal fin distinguishing it from S. duidae and S. ocellatus. As in all gymnotiforms it has no dorsal fin and no true tail fin; locomotion comes from a long ribbon-like anal fin run in travelling waves along the underside of the body, letting the fish move forward or backward with equal ease. The body is scaleless, smooth-skinned and soft, a trait shared across the bluntnose and sand knifefish genera.
The head carries an unusually dense concentration of sensory pits around the mouth, tuned to detect the weak electrical activity of prey muscles and to read the fish's own reflected EOD. The eyes, by contrast, are overgrown with a thin layer of skin and contribute little to how the fish finds its way or its food; electrolocation does the work instead. Like its relatives in Hypopomidae and Rhamphichthyidae, S. elegans produces a pulse-type discharge — brief, biphasic pulses on the order of one to two milliseconds, repeating at a fairly steady rate — rather than the continuous wave-type signal used by the ghost knifefishes.
Habitat
The species is widespread across the Amazon and Orinoco basins and the Guianas, recorded from terra firme forest streams and floodplain habitats throughout much of tropical South America. It favours slow, shaded forest creeks and floating meadows, water that is often warm and low in dissolved oxygen but that these fish are well adapted to tolerate.
By day, S. elegans lies motionless on the bottom among fallen leaves, its banded pattern breaking up its outline against the leaf litter, and becomes active at night. The water it lives in is typically soft, near-neutral to slightly acidic and often tannin-stained, conditions that keep light levels low and make electrolocation, rather than eyesight, the more useful sense. In the aquarium this points to a dim, sand- or leaf-litter-bottomed tank with cover to lie in by day rather than an open, brightly lit setup.
Feeding
In the wild, S. elegans hunts small invertebrates — mosquito larvae, small crustaceans and worms — picked out of the leaf litter and sediment mostly at night, using its dense array of facial sensory pits to detect prey by their electrical signature rather than by sight. It is a patient, close-range forager rather than an open-water pursuit hunter, consistent with a fish that spends its days lying still and camouflaged.
In the aquarium it takes small meaty foods after dark — bloodworm, chopped blackworm, brine shrimp and similar frozen fare sized for its modest mouth — and, like other nocturnal electric knifefishes, feeds best once the lights are down and the tank has settled for the night. Tankmates that compete aggressively for food in the open, or that disturb a resting fish by day, are best avoided.
Mating
As in other gymnotiforms, the pulse-type electric organ discharge is thought to carry a social as well as a sensing function, and courtship in the bluntnose and sand knifefishes is believed to involve exchanges of these species- and sex-specific signals alongside physical approach in the dark. Little has been documented specifically for Steatogenys elegans, and much of what is known about electric courtship in this part of the order comes from better-studied relatives rather than from direct observation of this species.
Data are sparse on pair formation or any courtship display beyond the general pattern seen across small pulse-type Hypopomidae and Rhamphichthyidae, so this remains an area where honest uncertainty is more useful than invented detail.
Breeding
Breeding in Steatogenys elegans is poorly documented, in keeping with the small, cryptic pulse-type knifefishes of Rhamphichthyidae generally. Where reproduction has been inferred for this group, it is thought to involve scattering or depositing eggs among leaf litter, roots or sand, likely timed to the wet season, with little or no parental care afterward.
The species is not known to be bred in home aquaria, and aquarium stock is understood to be wild-collected. There is no established captive-breeding protocol to report, and the honest position for aquarists is that this remains a species to keep well rather than to expect to spawn.
In the aquarium
Steatogenys elegans suits a quiet, dimly lit aquarium with a soft substrate — sand or fine leaf litter — and plenty of cover such as driftwood, leaf litter and shaded corners for it to lie in by day. As a scaleless fish it is sensitive to ammonia and nitrate and reacts badly to copper-based medications, so it needs mature filtration, steady water quality and reduced medication doses if treatment is ever required.
It is described as comparatively peaceful toward both its own kind and other fish, but as a nocturnal predator it should not be trusted with very small or bite-size tankmates, which it may hunt after dark using electrolocation. Warm, soft, near-neutral to slightly acidic water suits it best, matching the terra firme forest streams it comes from. Because it relies on its electric sense rather than eyesight, harsh lighting and a bare, brightly lit tank are poor choices; a shaded, sand-bottomed setup with leaf litter lets it behave naturally.
Conservation
Steatogenys elegans is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, last evaluated in September 2020, reflecting its wide distribution across the Guianas and the Amazon and Orinoco basins and the absence of any documented major threats. It is not targeted by commercial fisheries and appears only incidentally in the aquarium trade.
As with other widely distributed Neotropical knifefishes, that Least Concern status describes the species across a very large range rather than guaranteeing the health of every local population; ongoing deforestation and habitat change in parts of the Amazon and Orinoco basins remain a general pressure on forest-stream fish communities of this kind, even where no specific threat to this species has been identified.
