Taxonomy & naming
Sternarchorhynchus cramptoni was described by de Santana and Vari in 2010, part of a broad revision of the genus Sternarchorhynchus that recognized more than thirty species across the Amazon and Orinoco systems. It belongs to the family Apteronotidae, the ghost knifefishes, within the order Gymnotiformes, the New-World electric knifefishes — a group defined by an electric organ and a single elongated anal fin used for locomotion rather than by any resemblance to true eels or to the unrelated Asian featherback and clown knifefishes (Chitala, Notopterus), which sit in an entirely different order.
Within Apteronotidae, the electric organ is built from modified nerve tissue rather than muscle, giving the family the fastest, most refined wave-type electric organ discharges of any knifefish group. Sternarchorhynchus is one of the tube-snouted genera in that family, and S. cramptoni is the sister species of S. rezteri, the two occurring together in the same stretch of the main Amazon channel. The species epithet honours William Crampton, a University of Central Florida biologist recognized for his contributions to the study of gymnotiform electric fishes.
Morphology
Like other members of its genus, S. cramptoni has the elongated, downward-curving tubular snout that distinguishes Sternarchorhynchus from the blunter-headed Apteronotus, an adaptation thought to help it probe substrate and crevices for hidden prey. The body is blade-shaped and laterally compressed, with no dorsal fin and no true tail fin; a long anal fin running most of the underside provides the rippling, wave-like propulsion typical of the order, letting the fish move forward and backward with equal ease. Reported maximum size is 13 in total length in males and 11.5 in in females, making this one of the larger species in its genus.
The species stands out from most of its close relatives by colour: where many Sternarchorhynchus and related ghost knifefishes are dark brown to black, S. cramptoni is overall whitish-pink, a pattern that matches its life in the perpetually dark main channel of the Amazon rather than shallower, sunlit margins. As in other Apteronotidae, an electric organ runs the length of the body beneath the skin, and the skin itself is scaleless, carrying the sensory pores that read the electric field. Males run measurably larger than females at maximum size, but detailed external sexing characters are not documented for this species.
Habitat
Sternarchorhynchus cramptoni is known from the Amazon basin in Brazil, where it and its sister species S. rezteri occur in sympatry in the main stem of the Amazon River itself — deep, fast, turbid river channel rather than backwater or floodplain lake. FishBase notes a habitat split by life stage typical of the genus: juveniles are found in river margins and seasonally flooded várzea forest, while adults move into the darker, deeper main channel.
That channel habitat is functionally lightless for most of the year, and it is exactly the setting the Apteronotidae's electric sense evolved for: in water too turbid and too deep for vision to be of much use, a continuous electric field read through skin pores lets the fish map its surroundings and locate prey without needing to see. Data on this species' precise temperature and chemistry preferences are sparse, but they will track the warm, soft, circumneutral conditions typical of Amazon main-channel water.
Feeding
FishBase records the diet of Sternarchorhynchus cramptoni simply as invertebrates, consistent with the genus as a whole: benthic and interstitial prey — aquatic insect larvae, worms and small crustaceans — picked out of sediment, root tangles and crevices in total darkness. The distinctive long, curved snout of the genus is presumed to aid this kind of close-range probing, letting the fish work its electric sense into tight spaces that a blunter head could not reach.
As with the rest of the order, prey is located primarily by electrolocation rather than sight or smell: the fish's own weak electric field is distorted by anything nearby with different conductivity from the surrounding water, and the fish reads that distortion through pores across its skin. No aquarium feeding data exist for this species, since it is not established in the trade; specific dietary habits beyond "invertebrates" are data sparse.
Mating
No courtship or spawning behaviour has been documented specifically for Sternarchorhynchus cramptoni. What is understood comes from the family Apteronotidae generally: the wave-type electric organ discharge that these fish use to navigate the dark also functions as a social signal, encoding identity, sex and, in some species, readiness to spawn. In the best-studied relative, the brown ghost knifefish (Apteronotus leptorhynchus), males and females shift their discharge frequencies toward one another during courtship in an electrical duet, and rivals interrupt each other's signals on meeting — a language of frequency and timing playing out in water too dark to see a mate approach.
Whether S. cramptoni shows the same pattern of frequency courtship is not established; it is inferred from family-level biology rather than direct observation of this species. Given how rarely deep-channel Sternarchorhynchus are even collected alive, this is likely to remain poorly documented for the foreseeable future.
Breeding
Sternarchorhynchus cramptoni is not known to have been bred in captivity, and given its habitat — the main channel of the Amazon River, far from the pet trade — this is unsurprising; the species is essentially unrepresented in aquaria. Apteronotidae in general are egg-layers that scatter eggs among cover such as roots, plants and crevices, with no meaningful parental care documented afterward, and even the trade's most familiar ghost knifefish, the black ghost, is only rarely bred outside hormone-induced farming operations.
For S. cramptoni specifically there is no protocol to report and none should be assumed; breeding biology for this species is data sparse, and what can honestly be said extends no further than the family-level pattern of egg-scattering without parental care.
In the aquarium
Sternarchorhynchus cramptoni is not an aquarium fish in any practical sense — it is a deep-channel Amazon species known from scientific collection, not from the ornamental trade, and no husbandry record exists for it. Its family-level traits still matter for anyone who might encounter a Sternarchorhynchus in specialist hands: like all Apteronotidae it is scaleless and correspondingly sensitive to ammonia, nitrate and to copper-based or otherwise harsh medications, which need reduced dosing if used at all.
Its long, delicate tube snout would need very careful handling and a smooth-surfaced tank free of anything that could snag or injure it, and as a nocturnal electroreceptive predator it would need darkness, dense cover and the total absence of small tankmates that could be hunted after lights-out. In practice this is a species for research aquaria and public collections rather than home tanks, and any captive account of it should be treated as speculative rather than as established care information.
Conservation
Sternarchorhynchus cramptoni was assessed by the IUCN Red List on 30 July 2020 as Least Concern, with no immediate conservation threat documented. This reflects its occurrence within the vast and, in this stretch, relatively undisturbed main channel of the Amazon River in Brazil, rather than any specific study of population trend.
As with many main-channel Amazonian fish, the practical pressures to watch are basin-wide rather than site-specific: sediment and flow changes from damming, mercury and other pollution associated with mining, and broader deforestation across the watershed. None of these are documented as acting on S. cramptoni in particular, and the Least Concern rating should be read as reflecting genuinely low present-day risk rather than a gap in assessment effort.
