Taxonomy & naming
Sternarchorhynchus galibi was described by de Santana & Vari in 2010, one of a wave of new Sternarchorhynchus species recognised as the genus was revised in the early 2010s. It belongs to the family Apteronotidae, the ghost knifefishes, within the order Gymnotiformes — the New-World electric knifefishes, a group of bony fish defined not by scales or fin arrangement in the usual sense but by an electric organ and a single long anal fin used for propulsion. Apteronotidae are distinguished within the order by an electric organ built from modified nerve cells rather than muscle tissue, which produces the fastest, most refined wave-type discharges of any knifefish family — the basis of the group's exceptional electrolocation sense.
The genus name Sternarchorhynchus refers to the drawn-out, tube-like snout shared by its species, a build sometimes called the "tube-snouted" or "elephantnose" knifefishes in the trade, though the true elephantnose fishes (Mormyridae) are unrelated African fish and only superficially similar in shape. The species epithet galibi honours the Kali'na (Galibi) people of the Maroni river region, reflecting the type locality near the river's mouth. As with all Gymnotiformes, Sternarchorhynchus is not related to the Asian featherback and clown knifefishes (Chitala, Notopterus), which share the common name "knifefish" purely by convergent body shape. The Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the valid name.
Morphology
Sternarchorhynchus galibi has the classic tube-snout ghost knifefish build: a laterally compressed, blade-shaped body tapering to a whip-thin tail, with no dorsal fin and no true tail fin. The snout is markedly elongated and slightly downturned, an adaptation for probing into crevices, sediment and leaf litter for hidden prey. FishBase records a maximum total length of about 8 in in males and 6.5 in in females, making it a modest-sized member of the genus.
As in all Apteronotidae, propulsion comes from a single long anal fin run in travelling waves along the underside of the body, letting the fish glide forwards or backwards with equal control — useful for backing out of the narrow crevices it forages in. The skin is scaleless and unprotected, and an electric organ runs the length of the body beneath a field of electroreceptive pores that read the weak field it produces. FishBase gives the species a trophic level around 3.3, consistent with a diet of small invertebrate prey rather than fish.
Habitat
The species is known from the Maroni (Marowijne) river basin, the border drainage between Suriname and French Guiana, with its type locality near the river mouth. It is a freshwater, benthopelagic fish, living in and around the deeper channels of the river system rather than still backwaters — the same kind of flowing, structurally complex habitat favoured by other tube-snout ghost knifefishes, with root tangles, leaf litter and sediment offering both cover and hunting ground.
As a narrow-range Guianan endemic, its entire known distribution is confined to this one basin, which makes the population unusually exposed to anything that changes the river locally. Like other ghost knifefishes it is presumed to favour the same warm, soft, dimly lit conditions typical of the family, where an electric sense outperforms eyesight and daylight activity is minimal.
Feeding
Sternarchorhynchus galibi is a nocturnal, insectivorous hunter, consistent with its close relatives and the trophic level recorded on FishBase. Its long, downturned snout is built for probing into narrow spaces — crevices among roots, submerged wood and sediment — where it searches out aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans and other invertebrates that eyesight alone could not find in the dark or turbid water it inhabits.
As in other Apteronotidae, this foraging is guided chiefly by electrolocation: the fish's weak electric field is distorted by the presence of prey, allowing it to detect animals hidden from view. Specific dietary data for this species is sparse beyond the trophic-level estimate, but the general pattern across tube-snouted ghost knifefishes is a diet of small benthic invertebrates taken from cover rather than open water.
Mating
Courtship in the Gymnotiformes is closely tied to electricity. Across the wave-type Apteronotidae, the electric organ discharge carries information about a fish's identity, sex and reproductive state, and males typically produce lower-frequency, higher-amplitude discharges than females — a dimorphism well documented in the family generally, even though the details have not been specifically studied in S. galibi. In related, better-studied ghost knifefishes, males and females shift discharge frequency toward one another in a kind of electric duet during courtship, and rival fish signal with distinctive interruptions of their own discharge.
Specific courtship behaviour for Sternarchorhynchus galibi has not been documented; this is a narrow-range, poorly studied river species, and what can be said with confidence is drawn from the wider pattern in electrophysiology research on the family rather than direct observation of this species.
Breeding
No breeding has been documented for Sternarchorhynchus galibi in the wild or in captivity — this is a data-sparse tube-snout species that is not established in the aquarium trade. Across Apteronotidae more broadly, spawning is rarely observed even in well-known species: fish are egg-layers that scatter eggs among roots, plants or crevices, most trade specimens are wild-caught or, for a handful of commercially farmed relatives, hormone-induced, and no substantial parental care has been recorded in the family.
Given how little is known even about this species' basic ecology beyond its type description and IUCN assessment, nothing specific can be said about its reproductive biology beyond that general family pattern; the honest position is that its breeding remains essentially unstudied.
In the aquarium
Sternarchorhynchus galibi is not an established aquarium species — it is a narrow-range Guianan river endemic that has not built a presence in the trade, and any specimens that do appear would be wild-caught rather than farmed. General care principles for tube-snouted Apteronotidae apply if the species were ever kept: warm water in the roughly 73–82 °F range, soft and near-neutral to slightly acidic chemistry, dim lighting, and generous cover such as driftwood, root tangles and caves that let a nocturnal, electrosensitive fish feel secure by day.
Because it is scaleless, like all Gymnotiformes it would be highly sensitive to water quality and to medications — copper-based treatments should be avoided altogether and other doses reduced — and it would need mature filtration to keep ammonia and nitrate low. As a small-mouthed insectivore it would not be a threat to larger tankmates, but as a nocturnal hunter it should not be trusted with very small fish or shrimp. In practice, the responsible position for a species this poorly known and this narrowly distributed is to leave it in the wild rather than seek it for a tank.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Sternarchorhynchus galibi as Near Threatened, an assessment made on 14 December 2022 under criterion B1ab(iii), reflecting a very restricted range combined with an ongoing decline in the quality of its habitat. Its entire known distribution is the Maroni basin along the Suriname–French Guiana border, and a species confined to a single river system has essentially nowhere to retreat to if conditions there deteriorate.
The pressures implied by that criterion are habitat-driven — the kind of river-basin change associated with deforestation, mining and land-use pressure that affects Guianan Shield rivers generally, though species-specific threat detail is not extensively documented for S. galibi itself. Its low recorded fishing vulnerability and lack of any aquarium trade presence mean direct exploitation is not the concern; the risk here is a narrow-endemic's exposure to anything that changes the one river it lives in.
