Taxonomy & naming
Sternopygus branco was described by Crampton, Hulen & Albert in 2004 and belongs to the family Sternopygidae, the glass and rattail knifefishes, within the order Gymnotiformes — the New-World electric knifefishes. The order is defined by two linked features: an electric organ that generates a weak field around the body, and a single long anal fin, used in place of a tail fin for propulsion, that lets these fish move backward as readily as forward. Sternopygidae in particular produce a wave-type discharge — a continuous, near-sinusoidal hum rather than the intermittent pulses of some other gymnotiform families.
The type locality lies in the Amazon River between the confluences of the Rios Japurá and Negro, and along the lower 62 mi of the Rio Negro itself. The species epithet branco is a reference to the pale, largely unpigmented body of live specimens, a diagnostic feature the original description uses to separate it from its darker congeners. Despite the shared common name "knifefish", Sternopygus and its relatives are not related to the Asian featherback and clown knifefishes (Chitala, Notopterus); the resemblance in body shape is convergent, not a sign of kinship. Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the valid name.
Morphology
Sternopygus branco has the classic rattail knifefish shape: a slender, laterally compressed, scaleless body that tapers gradually into a fine, whip-like tail with no distinct caudal fin. There is no dorsal fin; the entire underside from behind the head to the tip of the tail carries the long anal fin whose rippling waves push the fish through the water in either direction. FishBase records a maximum length of 19.5 in total length, making it one of the larger species in a genus that already includes some of the biggest gymnotiforms.
The original description singles out pale body pigmentation as a diagnostic character of live specimens, distinguishing it from other Sternopygus in the same rivers. Along its flanks run the electroreceptor pores that read the fish's own electric field, and beneath the body runs the electric organ itself. The most distinctive trait, however, is invisible: its electric organ discharge is a slow, wave-type hum with a repetition rate of only about 24–35 Hz, markedly lower than the 40–300 Hz typical of other Sternopygus species, and one it can modulate rapidly in amplitude — a signature used both to identify the species and, presumably, by the fish themselves for communication.
Habitat
Sternopygus branco is known from the Amazon River proper in Brazil, including the stretch between the Rios Japurá and Negro confluences and the lower Rio Negro. It occupies the main channels of large rivers — both whitewater and blackwater — rather than the seasonally flooded forest (várzea) or small terra firme streams that many other Amazonian fish rely on; FishBase notes it is specifically absent from those flooded-forest habitats.
That channel-dwelling habit places it in deep, often turbid or tannin-darkened water where vision counts for little and an electric sense counts for a great deal — the whole evolutionary logic of the group. Like other Sternopygidae it is a warm-water, largely nocturnal fish of Neotropical rivers, active after dark when its wave-type discharge lets it navigate and hunt in conditions where sight is nearly useless.
Feeding
FishBase describes Sternopygus branco as feeding on aquatic insect larvae taken from the substrate, foraging methodically among organic detritus on the riverbed. This fits the pattern for the family: nocturnal micro-predators that locate small invertebrates in the dark largely by electrolocation, sensing the way prey distorts the weak field generated around the body rather than relying on eyesight.
No aquarium feeding record exists for this species, as it is not established in the hobby. By analogy with its better-known relatives in Sternopygus and Eigenmannia, a diet of small live or frozen invertebrate foods — bloodworm, blackworm, brine shrimp and similar meaty items — offered after dark would be expected to suit it, but this is inference from the genus rather than a documented account for S. branco itself.
Mating
As in other wave-type gymnotiforms, electric organ discharge is likely to play a central role in how Sternopygus branco locates and assesses mates in the dark river channels it inhabits — each individual's discharge frequency can signal identity, sex and condition to others nearby, a pattern well documented in related genera such as Eigenmannia. Whether this species shows the same courtship exchanges and rival signalling described for its relatives has not been studied directly.
FishBase notes that gravid females have been collected along floodplain edges and in paraná (side) channels during January–February, coinciding with the rising-water season, while males were not documented during that same study — leaving the courtship behaviour of this species largely undescribed. Data are sparse beyond this seasonal association with rising water.
Breeding
Sternopygidae as a family are egg-layers, typically scattering adhesive eggs among plant roots or floating vegetation in warm, soft, wet-season water, with little or no parental care afterward. Sternopygus branco has not been bred in the aquarium and there is no husbandry record to draw on; the only breeding-relevant field observation is the presence of gravid females near floodplain margins and side channels in the rising-water months of January and February, suggesting reproduction is tied to the seasonal flood pulse typical of large Amazonian rivers.
This species is not part of the aquarium trade, so there is no captive-breeding protocol to report. Given how little is documented even in the wild, any account of its reproductive behaviour beyond the seasonal timing above would be guesswork rather than fact.
In the aquarium
Sternopygus branco is not an aquarium fish in any practical sense — it is essentially unrecorded in the hobby, and there is no husbandry literature to draw from. What can be said comes from the general biology of Sternopygidae and the scale of the species itself: at up to roughly 19.5 in total length it would need a very large, long aquarium if it were ever kept, well beyond what a community setup provides.
Like all gymnotiforms it is scaleless, which makes the group as a whole unusually sensitive to ammonia and nitrate, and to copper-based or otherwise harsh medications, which typically must be dosed at reduced strength. As a nocturnal channel-dwelling predator it would need dim lighting, secure cover, and warm, soft, near-neutral water reflecting its riverine origin. Given the total absence of trade or husbandry history, prospective keepers are better served by the well-established, genuinely available Sternopygidae such as the glass knifefish (Eigenmannia) than by seeking out this species.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Sternopygus branco as Least Concern, an assessment made in December 2020. It is known from the Amazon River's main channel over a substantial stretch, including areas around the Rio Negro confluence, rather than from a single tributary, which supports a lower-risk status.
As a channel-dwelling species of one of the world's largest rivers it is not currently flagged as facing the acute, localized pressures — damming, deforestation of a single watershed, mercury pollution from small-scale gold mining — that threaten many narrow-range, single-tributary gymnotiforms elsewhere in the Amazon basin. It is not targeted by the aquarium trade, which removes one common source of collection pressure for other electric knifefishes.
