Taxonomy & naming
Tembeassu titanicus was described in 2022 by Peixoto, Campos-da-Paz, Menezes, de Santana, Triques & Datovo, the second and larger of the two species placed in the genus Tembeassu, within the family Apteronotidae — the ghost knifefishes — in the order Gymnotiformes, the New-World electric knifefishes. Gymnotiformes are bony fish but an unusual lineage, defined by an electric organ and a ribbon-like anal fin that provides essentially all of their propulsion; the Apteronotidae are distinguished within the order by an electric organ built from modified nerve cells rather than muscle, giving them the fastest, most refined wave-type discharges of any knifefish group.
The genus was erected for T. marauna and only gained its second species with this 2022 revision, which used external anatomy alongside X-ray microcomputed tomography (µCT) to resolve the two forms. T. titanicus is separated from T. marauna chiefly by the absence of a tooth patch at the front of the roof of the mouth, and by the external corner of the mouth passing through a vertical line level with the rear nostril rather than short of it — a small, technical distinction, but one the authors argue points to a genuinely different diet and habitat use between the two species. Despite the shared common name "knifefish", Gymnotiformes are unrelated to the Asian featherback and clown knifefishes (Chitala, Notopterus); the resemblance is convergent body shape, not kinship. The Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the valid name.
Morphology
As in other Apteronotidae, Tembeassu titanicus lacks a dorsal fin and a conventional tail fin; movement comes from a long anal fin run as a travelling wave along the underside of the body, which lets these fish glide forwards or backwards with equal control. The body is elongate and laterally compressed in the manner typical of the family, and the skin is scaleless like all gymnotiforms — a detail with real consequences for how sensitive a fish like this is to water quality and to certain medications.
The species epithet titanicus signals its size relative to its only congener: this is the larger of the two Tembeassu species. Beyond the diagnostic mouth and tooth characters used to separate it from T. marauna, detailed morphometric data have not been widely reported outside the technical description, and much of what distinguishes the species is visible only on close examination or under CT imaging rather than at a glance. Running the length of the body is the electric organ and the sensory pores that read the field it produces — the defining apparatus of the whole order, and the sense this fish depends on far more than eyesight in the dark, sediment-laden water it inhabits.
Habitat
Tembeassu titanicus is known only from the upper rio Paraná basin in Brazil, part of the wider Araguari-Paraná river system — a narrow-range endemic rather than a widely distributed species. The upper Paraná is recognised as a major hotspot of endemic freshwater fish diversity in South America, and Tembeassu is one of several genera found nowhere else.
Like other Apteronotidae, it is presumed to occupy flowing river channels rather than still water — sandy-bottomed creeks and river margins with cover from roots and leaf litter, in keeping with the family's general habitat preferences of well-oxygenated, moving water in the roughly 75–82 °F range. Specific habitat data for this species have not been published beyond the description; as with much of its biology, the safest statement is that it follows the pattern of the family it belongs to rather than one confirmed by dedicated field study.
Feeding
No species-specific dietary study has been published for Tembeassu titanicus. What is known is indirect but telling: the 2022 description notes that its tooth arrangement differs from that of its congener T. marauna, and the authors suggest this points to the two species exploiting different food resources despite sharing the same river system — a classic sign of niche partitioning between closely related fish.
Like other ghost knifefishes, it almost certainly hunts at night using electrolocation, detecting the faint electrical signatures of small invertebrates and other prey hidden in sediment or among submerged roots where eyesight would be of little use. Beyond that inference from family-wide biology and the dental evidence in the description, the actual diet of T. titanicus in the wild is data sparse.
Mating
As in other Apteronotidae, the wave-type electric organ discharge of Tembeassu titanicus is presumed to carry more than just information about the surrounding environment — in well-studied relatives such as the brown ghost, discharge frequency shifts convey identity, sex and readiness to spawn, and courting fish exchange signals in something like an electrical duet before any physical approach. Whether this has been documented directly in Tembeassu is not established; no courtship or spawning behaviour has been reported for the genus in the literature reviewed here.
This is a data-sparse area for the species. Given how recently it was described, and how little field or laboratory work has followed the initial description, courtship behaviour in T. titanicus should be treated as inferred from its family rather than observed and recorded.
Breeding
Tembeassu titanicus has no known aquarium or captive-breeding history, and nothing has been published on its reproductive biology beyond its status as an egg-laying gymnotiform. Apteronotidae generally spawn among cover such as roots and crevices, with no substantial parental care, and are only rarely bred even in the species that are well established in the trade — most captive stock of popular ghosts is wild-caught or hormone-induced on commercial farms, and T. titanicus is not a trade species at all.
Given the total absence of husbandry or field breeding data, the honest position is that its breeding mode is inferred from the family rather than documented for this species — data sparse, and likely to remain so given the genus is a narrow-range endemic first described only in 2022.
In the aquarium
Tembeassu titanicus is not an aquarium fish. It is a recently described, critically endangered, narrow-range endemic known from technical taxonomic literature rather than the hobby trade, and there are no husbandry reports to draw on. Nothing here should be read as an invitation to seek the species out for a tank.
What can be said follows from its family: Apteronotidae are scaleless and correspondingly sensitive to ammonia, nitrate, and to copper-based or harsh medications, which would need reduced dosing in any captive setting. They are nocturnal, electrolocating predators that need dim lighting and secure cover, and are generally unsuitable companions for small fish or shrimp. For a species this rare and this poorly known, however, the responsible course is to leave it to its river system and to conservation-focused study rather than the aquarium trade.
Conservation
Tembeassu titanicus is assessed by the IUCN as Critically Endangered. It is a single-basin endemic restricted to the upper rio Paraná system in Brazil, a region already heavily modified by damming, agricultural runoff and habitat degradation — pressures that fall hardest on narrow-range fish with nowhere else to go. The upper Paraná is one of South America's recognised hotspots for endemic freshwater fish, and several of its endemic genera, Tembeassu among them, are considered to be at serious risk.
The species was described only in 2022, which means its full range, population size and specific threats are still being worked out even as it carries a Critically Endangered assessment. That combination — a fish barely known to science already facing a high extinction risk — is common among newly described Neotropical basin endemics, and underscores why continued taxonomic and field survey work in the upper Paraná matters for conservation as much as for systematics.
