Taxonomy & naming
Apteronotus paranaensis was described by Otto Schindler in 1940 from the rio Paraná basin of Brazil, the type locality that gives the species its epithet. It belongs to the family Apteronotidae — the ghost knifefishes — within the order Gymnotiformes, the New-World electric knifefishes, a group of bony fish set apart by their electric organs and by a single long anal fin used for locomotion in place of a normal tail. Within the order, the Apteronotidae are distinguished by an electric organ built from modified nerve cells rather than muscle tissue, giving them the fastest, most refined electric discharges of any knifefish family.
The taxonomic status of A. paranaensis has been treated as uncertain: recent checklists (Ferraris et al., 2017) list it as species inquirenda, meaning the original description has not been confidently matched to material collected since, and its distinctness from other upper Paraná Apteronotidae has not been fully resolved. The Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the valid name and its current status. As with all Gymnotiformes, A. paranaensis should not be confused with the Asian featherback and clown knifefishes (Chitala, Notopterus) — those are bonytongues from an unrelated order, and the shared common name "knifefish" reflects similar body shape only, not kinship.
Morphology
No detailed published description of external colouration or proportions for A. paranaensis is available beyond the original 1940 account, so morphological detail here is necessarily sparse. As an Apteronotidae, it should share the family's basic body plan: a laterally compressed, blade-like body tapering to a slender tail, no dorsal fin, and a long anal fin running along most of the ventral length that provides essentially all propulsion, letting the fish move forward and backward with equal facility.
Running the length of the body is the neurogenic electric organ characteristic of the family, built from modified nerve cells rather than muscle and occupying roughly the rear four-fifths of the body, ventral to the spinal cord. Over the skin, arrays of electroreceptor pores read the field this organ produces. Like other Apteronotidae the species is scaleless. Specific size, colour pattern, and sexual dimorphism have not been documented in the sources available — data sparse.
Habitat
Apteronotus paranaensis is known from the upper rio Paraná basin of Brazil, part of the broader Paraná–Paraguay river system in the southern Neotropics. Related Apteronotidae in this same stretch of river — including the genus Tembeassu, endemic to the upper Paraná, and Apteronotus brasiliensis, which ranges into both the Paraná and São Francisco basins — indicate a basin with real, if poorly catalogued, ghost-knifefish diversity.
Gymnotiformes in general, and Apteronotidae specifically, favour flowing water: rapidly moving creek and river channels over sand, well oxygenated, rather than still backwaters. Documented habitat for the genus more broadly runs 73–82 °F with pH roughly 6.0–8.0, and the fish are nocturnal, sheltering by day in logs, root tangles or leaf litter and becoming active after dark — exactly the low-light setting in which an electric sense outperforms eyesight. Nothing in the available sources contradicts this pattern for A. paranaensis specifically, but no field study of this species' precise microhabitat has been located.
Feeding
No diet study specific to A. paranaensis was found. Apteronotidae as a family are nocturnal carnivores that hunt small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, worms and small crustaceans — largely by electrolocation, detecting the faint electrical signature of prey hidden in sediment or among roots and leaf litter after dark rather than relying on sight. Apteronotus paranaensis has no documented breeding record in aquaria or in the field beyond its original description. Ghost knifefishes as a family are egg-layers that scatter eggs among cover such as roots, plants or crevices, with no substantial parental care afterward, and even the aquarium-trade species in this family (the black ghost, the brown ghost) are only rarely bred outside hormone-induced farm conditions. Given that A. paranaensis is not known to be part of the aquarium trade at all, its breeding biology is entirely unstudied. In the aquarium
Apteronotus paranaensis does not appear to be present in the aquarium trade; the sources reviewed here describe it only as a taxonomically uncertain basin endemic known from scientific collections, not as a fish offered to hobbyists. Should material ever reach aquaria, the family's general care requirements would apply: like other Apteronotidae it is scaleless and would be expected to be sensitive to ammonia, nitrate and copper-based medications, and as a nocturnal electroreceptive predator it would need a dim, well-covered tank and would not be safe with bite-size tankmates after dark. Absent any documented care history for this specific species, none of that can be stated as established fact — it is prudent inference from the family, not a record of this fish being kept.

As an apparent single-basin endemic of the upper rio Paraná, a heavily dammed and developed river system in Brazil, it would share the general vulnerabilities of other narrow-range Paraná Apteronotidae: habitat alteration from damming, water quality pressure, and the general difficulty of tracking data-poor, rarely-collected fish. No specific population trend or threat has been documented for this species, and any such statement would be speculation beyond the sources available.
