Taxonomy & naming
Allotoca goslinei was described by Michael L. Smith and Robert Rush Miller in 1987, in the journal Copeia, from material collected in the headwaters of the Río Ameca in Jalisco, Mexico. The holotype, a mature male of about 1.5 in standard length held at the University of Michigan Museum of Zoology, was taken with a type series that included sixteen newborn fry — a detail that immediately signalled the species' viviparous biology. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats Allotoca goslinei Smith & Miller, 1987 as the valid name, placing it in the genus Allotoca within the family Goodeidae, subfamily Goodeinae — the live-bearing splitfins endemic to the Mesa Central of Mexico.
The genus name Allotoca combines the Greek allos, "other," with tokos, "birth" or "offspring," a reference to the unusual mode of reproduction that sets the goodeids apart from the egg-laying killifishes they superficially resemble. The specific epithet goslinei honours William A. Gosline (1915–2002), an ichthyologist at the University of Michigan whose work on the sensory canal systems of cyprinodontoid fishes the describers wished to recognise. The English common name, banded allotoca, describes the row of narrow dark bars along the fish's side; in Mexico it is known as the tiro listado.
Within Allotoca the species is closely allied to A. dugesii and forms a sister pair with A. maculata, all small-bodied members of the genus restricted to the volcanic drainages of west-central Mexico. The narrow distribution and clear morphological characters have left the species taxonomically stable since its description, even as its situation in the wild collapsed.
Morphology
Allotoca goslinei is a small, stocky goodeid. Published figures give a maximum of about 2.5 in total length, with standard lengths of mature fish typically in the range of roughly 1.5–2 in; males are smaller and slimmer than females. The body is laterally compressed with a moderately blunt head, and the most distinctive feature is a series of about 12 to 18 narrow vertical bars running along the midside, the markings that give the species its English name.
Meristic characters recorded in the original description include modally about 16 dorsal-fin rays and 14 anal-fin rays, with 35 to 38 vertebrae. The dentition is that of a small insectivorous goodeid: a row of larger conical teeth on the outside backed by a narrower inner band of smaller teeth, suited to seizing small invertebrate prey rather than rasping algae.
Sexual dimorphism follows the goodeid pattern. Males possess the andropodium — a modified anterior portion of the anal fin in which the first roughly seven rays are shortened and separated from the rest by a notch, forming the "split fin" that gives the subfamily its common name and serving in internal insemination. Males also tend to carry a somewhat larger, more developed dorsal fin. Females grow longer, have a blunter head profile, and develop a flush of pink on the belly when in breeding condition.
Habitat
The species is endemic to the headwaters of the Río Ameca in Jalisco, Mexico. Its type locality is the Arroyo (Río) Potrero Grande, a tributary of the Ameca roughly 6 mi west of the town of Ameca on the road toward Atenguillo; it was also recorded from the Río Cuisillos near the Presa La Vega. This is a tiny natural range — effectively a single small stream system on the western edge of the Mexican Plateau.
Field notes from the type collections describe a habitat of quiet, terminal pools: one such pool measured only about 23 metres long and a few metres wide, up to roughly 1.2 metres deep, with slight to no current. The water ranged from clear to murky over a substrate of gravel, sand and mud, and the fish gathered in the shallows, around 6–10 in deep, beneath floating cover of water hyacinth, filamentous green algae and a nasturtium-like emergent plant. Recorded water temperatures in the spring-fed pools were cool by tropical standards, around 61–68 °F when measured between mid-February and early March, and FishBase summarises the species' tolerance as a tropical range of roughly 75–82 °F with pH near 7.0 to 7.6 and moderate hardness.
This dependence on a single small, spring-fed system left the banded allotoca acutely vulnerable. As water quality in the Ameca declined and the catchment was altered, the species had nowhere else to retreat to.
Feeding
Allotoca goslinei is a micro-predator. Its dentition — an outer row of larger conical teeth backed by a band of finer teeth — is built for grasping small animal prey rather than for scraping aufwuchs, and FishBase records a low trophic level of around 2.1, consistent with a diet dominated by small invertebrates. In its shallow vegetated pools the fish would have taken aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans and other invertebrates, and probably surface insects drifting among the floating plants.
In captivity the species is reported to accept a wide range of small foods, including bloodworms, other insect larvae, Daphnia, mysids and newly hatched brine shrimp, as well as good-quality flake and granular preparations. As with most goodeids, a varied diet leaning toward live and frozen invertebrate foods supports condition and breeding, while an excess of dry food is best avoided.
Because the wild population is gone, all dietary knowledge now comes from aquarium maintenance and from the morphological and trophic inferences drawn at the time of description; the species' natural feeding ecology was never studied in detail before it disappeared.
Mating
Like all members of the family Goodeidae, Allotoca goslinei reproduces by internal fertilisation and bears live young. The reproductive structure of the male is the andropodium, formed from the modified, notched anterior rays of the anal fin — the goodeid counterpart to the gonopodium of the poeciliid livebearers, though derived and used somewhat differently. Rather than relying on the slender, mobile gonopodium of a guppy, the male goodeid uses this shorter, split anal-fin structure to transfer sperm during a brief approach to the female.
Visual signalling accompanies courtship: males carry the larger dorsal fin and the characteristic banded flanks, while receptive females show a pink flush along the belly. Detailed behavioural observations specific to A. goslinei are sparse — the species was lost from the wild before its courtship could be studied in any depth — but its breeding follows the well-documented goodeine pattern seen in its close relatives A. dugesii and A. maculata.
Unlike many poeciliids, goodeids are not known for long-term sperm storage or for the superfetation (carrying overlapping broods at different stages) seen in some livebearers; instead each brood is fertilised and gestated as a discrete cohort. This makes the captive breeding cycle relatively orderly, which has helped conservation aquarists maintain the species across successive generations.
Breeding
Allotoca goslinei is viviparous and matrotrophic — that is, the developing embryos are nourished by the mother throughout gestation rather than living off a yolk reserve. Goodeids achieve this through trophotaeniae, ribbon- or rosette-like extensions that grow from the vent region of the embryo and absorb nutrients from the lining of the ovarian cavity, functioning as a placenta-like organ. This is one of the defining features of the family and a striking convergence on true placental nutrition.
Broods are small but the young are large and well developed. The type series included sixteen newborn fry measuring about 0.5 in, a brood size and birth length typical of the genus; the comparatively few, large offspring are an investment strategy quite different from the dozens of tiny fry a guppy may drop. In captivity the species is reported to spawn at around 68–70 °F, and a seasonal cue is important: keepers give the fish a cooler winter rest below about 68 °F (with a floor near 63 °F) to pause reproduction, after which warming the water triggers breeding.
The newborns are immediately free-swimming and able to take small foods, and at birth often still bear the remnants of their trophotaeniae for a short time. Because the wild population is extinct, every captive brood is, in a real sense, the species' only line of continuity — which is why studbook coordination and disciplined husbandry matter as much here as the mechanics of getting the fish to breed.
In the aquarium
The banded allotoca is a fish for the committed specialist rather than the casual keeper, and is maintained today largely within conservation networks such as the Goodeid Working Group. It is not difficult to breed once settled, but it is demanding about water quality and oxygen. Keepers report that it wants high dissolved oxygen — on the order of 8 mg/l or more — a moderate to swift current, and large, frequent water changes of roughly 60 to 80 percent per week to keep nitrogenous waste low.
Temperature management is central to its care. The species does best with a distinct seasonal cycle: a cool winter rest below about 68 °F, not dropping below roughly 63 °F, which pauses breeding and appears to support long-term health, followed by warming into the low 20s Celsius to bring the fish back into spawning condition. Year-round tropical warmth, by contrast, tends to wear the fish down. A well-oxygenated, well-filtered tank with some current and stable, moderately hard near-neutral water suits it.
Given its status, the most important husbandry point is provenance and stewardship rather than décor: stock should come from established captive lines, ideally within a coordinated studbook, and surplus fish should be passed to other serious keepers rather than dispersed casually. Keeping Allotoca goslinei well is, in practice, a small contribution to keeping the species in existence at all.
Conservation
Allotoca goslinei is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Extinct in the Wild (assessment dated 7 March 2018), and is also listed under Mexico's NOM-059-SEMARNAT-2010 as En Peligro de Extinción. Its decline was rapid and well documented. The species was eliminated from the main Río Ameca by the late 1990s, largely through pollution, but remained common in its last stronghold, the Arroyo Potrero Grande. After the green swordtail (Xiphophorus hellerii) became established there around 2000, the native goodeid — which still made up something like three-quarters of the fish community at the start of that year — crashed. Its last confirmed record dates to 2004, and surveys in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2016 and 2018 failed to find it, leading to the Extinct in the Wild classification.
The species now persists only in captivity, in small populations held in Mexico, the United States and Europe. A semi-captive conservation programme associated with Fish Ark Mexico (Omar Domínguez-Domínguez and colleagues, established around 2008) and a coordinated studbook within the hobbyist conservation community maintain the surviving lineage, which represents a single evolutionarily significant unit.
The banded allotoca has become a case study in how a narrowly endemic freshwater fish can be lost: a tiny natural range, pollution of its river system, and then an introduced competitor delivering the final blow. Whether it ever returns to the wild depends on habitat recovery in the upper Ameca and on the genetic health of the captive lines — making careful, coordinated aquarium keeping not a hobby footnote here, but the species' lifeline.
