Allotoca meeki is a small splitfin live-bearer found in the wild in a single endorheic basin in the highlands of Michoacán, Mexico, where it once swam in the clear, deep waters of Lake Zirahuén. A member of the Goodeidae — the Mexican splitfins, a family famous for nourishing their young through ribbon-like trophotaeniae rather than a yolk sac — the Zirahuén allotoca has become one of the most precarious goodeids of all: introduced largemouth bass eliminated it from the lake that gives it its name, and the species now clings on in a single spring-fed pond and a shallow creek too small for the bass to follow. It is, in effect, a fish that survives in the wild only in the margins its predator cannot reach, and in the aquaria of a handful of dedicated conservation breeders.

Taxonomy & naming

Allotoca meeki was described by the Mexican ichthyologist José Álvarez del Villar in 1959, in a contribution to the genus Neoophorus published in the journal Ciencia (México). It was originally named Neoophorus meeki, and the parentheses around the authority — (Álvarez, 1959) — record that the species has since been moved out of that genus and into Allotoca. The holotype is an adult female of about 2 in standard length, collected in 1957 at Lago Zirahuén near Ajuno, Michoacán, which fixes the type locality firmly in the small endorheic Zirahuén basin of the Balsas region.

The genus Allotoca was erected by Hubbs and Turner and belongs to the subfamily Goodeinae within the family Goodeidae, the splitfins or Mexican live-bearing toothcarps of the order Cyprinodontiformes. The genus name combines the Greek allos, "other" or "different," with tokos, "birth" or "offspring" — "different birth" — a reference to the distinctive trophotaeniae, the nutrient-absorbing appendages that goodeid embryos use to feed inside the mother. The specific epithet honours Seth Eugene Meek (1859–1914), the ichthyologist of the Field Museum in Chicago whose early-twentieth-century surveys laid much of the groundwork for the study of Mexican freshwater fishes.

Mexican and English vernacular names track the fish's home water: it is the Tiro de Zirahuén in Spanish and the Zirahuén allotoca (or, after FishBase, the "Zirahuen allotica") in English. The species is treated as a single evolutionarily significant unit in conservation assessments of the Mexican goodeids, reflecting its tiny, geographically confined range.

Morphology

Allotoca meeki is a small, stout-bodied splitfin. Reported maximum sizes are modest: around 3 in total length in males and up to about 3.5 in in females after the older aquarium literature, while museum material gives a maximum of roughly 2.5 in standard length. As in most goodeids, females run a little larger and heavier-bodied than males, and carry a broader, blunter head; gravid females are noticeably deep-bellied when carrying young.

The family's defining feature is written into the males' anal fin. Rather than the rod-like gonopodium of the New World poeciliids, male goodeids bear an andropodium — a fin in which the first several rays (about the first seven in Allotoca) are shortened and set off from the rest by a distinct notch, giving the "split fin" that names the family. This modified fin is used to transfer sperm during internal fertilisation. Males also tend to have a somewhat larger dorsal fin than females, while females are slightly longer overall and may show a yellowish wash on the anal fin.

In colour the Zirahuén allotoca is a comparatively plain fish by aquarium standards — the goodeids generally trade gaudy pigment for their remarkable reproductive biology — with the sexes separated more reliably by fin shape and body proportion than by bright nuptial colour. Detailed live-colour data for this species are sparse, and the most dependable identifying characters remain the andropodium notch in males and the deeper, larger-headed body of females.

Habitat

Allotoca meeki is endemic to the endorheic Laguna de Zirahuén basin in Michoacán, in the highlands of west-central Mexico, part of the wider Río Balsas region. Historically it occurred in Lake Zirahuén itself — a small, deep, clear mountain lake — together with a connected population in the Estanque de Condembas at Lago de Opopeo, roughly fourteen kilometres to the east, whose spring-fed outflow (the Río El Silencio) is the main source feeding the lagoon. The whole known wild range of the species is contained within this one closed basin.

In the lake, the fish favoured the deeper water below about a metre over a sandy bottom partly covered with firm mud, among dense stands of submerged plants — Chara, Potamogeton, Ceratophyllum and green algae. The surviving refuge habitat is very different: a swift, shallow, narrow effluent creek, choked with watercress-type vegetation, draining the Opopeo pond. It is precisely the smallness and current of this creek — too shallow and confined for largemouth bass to hunt effectively — that has allowed the species to persist there.

The basin's waters are tropical-montane and cool: FishBase records a lower bound near 68 °F, and conservation breeders find that the fish breeds best around 68–70 °F and benefits from a cool winter rest at 59–61 °F, with breeding stopping once temperatures climb above the mid-20s. This points to a fish adapted to clear, well-oxygenated highland water rather than warm lowland streams.

Feeding

Allotoca meeki is a carnivorously inclined micro-predator. Its dentition and relatively short gut, together with a low trophic level of about 2.2, indicate a diet built mainly from small animal prey rather than plant matter — small aquatic invertebrates taken from the bottom and among plants, and insects taken at or near the surface. This sets it somewhat apart from the more herbivorous or omnivorous goodeids and from the algae-grazing live-bearers of other families.

In captivity the species accepts a varied carnivore diet readily. Conservation breeders report success with bloodworms and other insect larvae, Daphnia, Mysis and newly hatched brine shrimp (Artemia nauplii), supplemented with good-quality flake and granulate foods. A diet rich in small invertebrate prey supports both general condition and breeding readiness.

Because the fish comes from clear, well-oxygenated, moving water, husbandry advice pairs this carnivorous feeding with clean conditions and good current; the dietary needs are not exotic, but they reward variety and the kind of small, frequent feedings suited to an active, invertebrate-hunting fish.

Mating

Like all goodeids, Allotoca meeki practises internal fertilisation, but the mechanics differ from those of the better-known poeciliid live-bearers. The male does not possess a rod-like gonopodium; instead he uses the andropodium — the notched, partly separated front portion of the anal fin — to transfer sperm to the female. There is no long-term sperm storage of the kind that lets a guppy produce brood after brood from a single mating; goodeid females generally require fresh insemination for each reproductive cycle.

Detailed courtship behaviour for this particular species is not well documented, and the responsible reading of the sparse data is to describe the family pattern rather than invent specifics. In goodeids generally, males display to and pursue females, and the modified anal fin brings the sexes into the brief contact needed for internal insemination. Temperature is an important cue for reproductive readiness in A. meeki: captive fish come into breeding condition at around 68–70 °F and shut down above roughly 77 °F, and a cool winter period below 68 °F is used deliberately to pause and then re-trigger the breeding cycle.

Sexual maturity, sex ratios and the finer points of pairing in the wild are inferred largely by analogy with the better-studied congener Allotoca diazi, the direct field data for A. meeki being limited. Where the cache is silent, it is left silent.

Breeding

Allotoca meeki is viviparous, and its mode of live-bearing is the hallmark of the Goodeinae: matrotrophy. After internal fertilisation the embryos develop inside the female and are nourished directly by the mother through trophotaeniae — ribbon- or rosette-like appendages that extend from the embryo's vent and absorb nutrients from the maternal tissue, functioning much like a placenta. This is fundamentally different from the yolk-dependent, ovoviviparous reproduction of poeciliids such as the guppy, and it means goodeid fry are typically born larger, fewer and better-developed. There is no superfetation here of the kind seen in some poeciliids; goodeids carry a single developing brood at a time.

Field evidence for the species is fragmentary but consistent with a seasonal cycle: juveniles have been reported in February, and a gravid female was collected in March during the 2017 rediscovery of the Opopeo population. Precise gestation length and typical brood size for A. meeki are not well established in the cache, and on the editorial principle of saying less rather than guessing, no firm numbers are asserted; the life history is inferred to resemble that of the related Allotoca diazi, which produces small broods of well-developed young after a gestation of several weeks.

In the aquarium, breeding is managed through temperature: a cool winter rest at 59–61 °F pauses reproduction, after which warming to around 68–70 °F brings the fish back into condition and prompts spawning, while temperatures above the mid-20s suppress it. The newborns are large, fully formed and immediately free-swimming — and, as with most live-bearers, benefit from cover, though the species' rarity means almost all breeding takes place under deliberate conservation management rather than casual hobby propagation.

In the aquarium

Allotoca meeki is not a beginner's fish and is rarely encountered in the general trade; in practice it is kept almost entirely within organised conservation-breeding programmes. Studbook populations are maintained by European splitfin specialists — the Austrian ÖVVÖ runs an Allotoca line within its Mesa Central programme — and the husbandry recommendations come from that community rather than from mass aquarium-keeping.

The care template reflects the species' cool, clear, moving-water origins. Recommended tanks are large for so small a fish — on the order of 25 US gal or more, kept low and broad — with moderate to swift current and high oxygen levels (around 8 mg/l or better). Cleanliness is emphasised, with large weekly water changes of 60–80 percent. A seasonal temperature regime is central: a cool winter rest down to about 59–61 °F to pause breeding, then 68–70 °F for the active breeding season, avoiding temperatures above the mid-20s. Feeding follows the carnivorous wild diet — bloodworm, insect larvae, Daphnia, Mysis and Artemia nauplii alongside flake and granulate.

The fish is harmless and of no fisheries interest (FishBase rates its fishing vulnerability very low), so the real challenge of keeping it is not aggression or delicacy of temperament but maintaining the cool, oxygen-rich, high-turnover conditions and the seasonal cycle that keep an endangered montane splitfin breeding true in captivity.

Conservation

Allotoca meeki is assessed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List (species 191697), under criteria B1ab(i,ii,iii,iv)+2ab(i,ii,iii,iv), in an assessment dated 8 March 2018. The classification reflects an extremely small range collapsed to a fraction of its former extent: a single endorheic basin, with the wild population now confined to one spring-fed pond and a short, narrow, shallow stretch of its outlet creek.

The driver of the decline is unambiguous. Once common in Lake Zirahuén, the species was eliminated from the lake itself by the late 1990s following the introduction of largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides), a voracious predator that the small native splitfin could not withstand. A population persisted upstream in Lake Opopeo, but by the 2000s the bass had invaded there too and the allotoca became scarce; the only secure refuge proved to be a segment of the lake outlet too small and shallow for the bass to exploit. The species was rediscovered in the Opopeo pond in 2017, sharing the water with Goodea atripinnis. Notably, despite its IUCN status, the fish carries no risk category under Mexico's national wildlife list (NOM-059-SEMARNAT-2010), a gap between international and domestic assessment.

For a species reduced to a single tiny wild refuge, captive conservation is not optional but central. Coordinated studbook breeding by European goodeid keepers — and the broader work of the Goodeid Working Group documenting and maintaining Mexican splitfins — provides the insurance population that may one day support reintroduction, should the introduced bass that drove the collapse ever be controlled within the Zirahuén basin.
