Carlhubbsia kidderi is a small, obscure livebearer of the Yucatán Peninsula and adjacent Guatemala, named jointly for two giants of early twentieth-century North American science — the ichthyologist Carl Leavitt Hubbs and the Maya archaeologist Alfred Vincent Kidder, who worked the same Mesoamerican country. Described in 1936 as Allophallus kidderi from the freshwaters of the Champotón basin, it is a slight, plainly marked toothcarp of slow rivers, floodplain marshes and lake margins, almost unknown in the aquarium hobby but secure in the wild. Like all poeciliids it fertilises internally and bears live young, the males equipped with the modified anal-fin gonopodium that defines the family.

Taxonomy & naming

Carlhubbsia kidderi was first described by Carl L. Hubbs in 1936 under the name Allophallus kidderi, in his treatment of the "Fishes of the Yucatan Peninsula" published in a Carnegie Institution of Washington volume devoted to the region's natural history (Publ. 457: 157–287). The material came from the freshwaters of the Champotón drainage of Campeche, in south-eastern Mexico. The genus was subsequently renamed Carlhubbsia, a replacement that itself commemorates Hubbs — one of the most influential American ichthyologists of the century and a specialist on exactly these small New World toothcarps. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats Carlhubbsia kidderi (Hubbs, 1936) as the valid name, with the original genus Allophallus in synonymy and the describer's name placed in parentheses to mark the generic change.

The species sits in the family Poeciliidae, subfamily Poeciliinae — the New World livebearers that include the guppies, mollies, swordtails and mosquitofishes. Carlhubbsia is a small genus of Mesoamerican poeciliids; its members are little-studied compared with the familiar aquarium genera, and most of what is recorded about C. kidderi comes from faunal surveys and museum material rather than from hobbyist culture. The double honorific in the name is unusual and deliberate: the genus honours Hubbs himself, while the species epithet "kidderi" honours Alfred Vincent Kidder (1885–1963), the American archaeologist whose work on the ancient Maya was bound up with the same Carnegie expeditions that yielded the type specimens.

Morphology

Carlhubbsia kidderi is a very small fish. Recorded maxima are roughly 2 in total length for males and unsexed individuals and about 2.5 in for females, the females running larger and deeper-bodied as is usual in the family. The body is slender and unremarkable in colour — a plain, pale to olive-silver toothcarp without the bright spotting or extended finnage of the ornamental poeciliids — which is part of why the species has never gained a foothold in the aquarium trade despite being a true livebearer.

As in all poeciliids, the sexes are distinguished by the male's gonopodium, an intromittent organ formed from modified rays of the anal fin and used to deliver sperm to the female internally. The original generic name Allophallus ("other phallus") pointed directly at the distinctive structure of this organ, which provided the morphological basis for separating the genus from its relatives. Beyond the gonopodium and the size difference between the sexes, detailed published descriptions of live colour and fin shape are sparse, and the species is best characterised simply as a small, plain, sexually dimorphic Mesoamerican livebearer.

Habitat

The species is restricted to the freshwaters of the Yucatán Peninsula and the adjoining lowlands of Guatemala, in the Champotón basin of Campeche (Mexico) and eastward into the Usumacinta drainage; photographed specimens are on record from Yaxtunilhá, Las Cruces, in the Guatemalan Usumacinta system. It is a fish of standing and slow-flowing waters — lakes with soft mud bottoms, river floodplains and marshes, and quiet river pools — rather than of swift current.

The waters it occupies are warm and tropical, broadly in the range of about 75–86 °F, with neutral to mildly alkaline chemistry around pH 7.0–7.8, consistent with the limestone karst geology of the Yucatán Peninsula. FishBase records a very wide hardness figure for the species that appears to be a database artefact rather than a measured field range, so hardness is best left unstated beyond the expectation of generally hard, calcium-rich water typical of the region's cenotes and rivers. Part of the species' range falls within the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve, which affords it some habitat protection, though abundances within the reserve have been reported as comparatively low.

Feeding

Carlhubbsia kidderi is a small omnivorous micropredator, with a trophic level estimated at around 3.0 — squarely in the range of the small poeciliids that take a mixed diet of plant and animal matter. In its floodplain, marsh and pool habitats it would feed opportunistically on algae and detritus, small aquatic invertebrates, and the larvae of insects, in the manner typical of the family's small toothcarps.

Direct dietary observations specific to this species are sparse, and the picture above is inferred from its size, trophic position and the feeding habits of its poeciliid relatives rather than from a dedicated gut-contents study. There is no established aquarium husbandry literature for the species to draw on; were it kept, it would be expected to accept the small foods that suit comparable livebearers — fine flake, micro-pellets and small live or frozen invertebrates — but this is extrapolation, not a documented account.

Mating

Reproduction in Carlhubbsia kidderi is internal, as in all poeciliids. Males fertilise females using the gonopodium, the modified anal fin that transfers packets of sperm; the species was originally placed in a genus (Allophallus) named for the particular form of this organ, underscoring how central gonopodial structure is to identifying and classifying these fishes. The mating system has been characterised as polygynandrous — both sexes mating with multiple partners — a pattern shared with many small livebearers in which males pursue females persistently and females may store viable sperm from more than one male.

Beyond the mode of fertilisation and the broadly polygynandrous system, the fine details of courtship in this particular species are not well documented. As a small, plainly coloured poeciliid it is unlikely to use the elaborate visual display seen in the more ornamented genera, and the published record is too thin to assert specific courtship behaviour with confidence. What is secure is that fertilisation is internal and that the female carries the developing young — the foundation of the live-bearing reproduction described in the next section.

Breeding

Carlhubbsia kidderi is viviparous, giving birth to live, free-swimming young rather than laying eggs. Reported reproductive figures put gestation at roughly 24–28 days and brood size at about 10 to 30 young, with females reaching sexual maturity at around four months of age. These values, together with a high population resilience and a short estimated doubling time, mark it as a typical r-selected small livebearer able to rebuild its numbers quickly.

The newborn fry emerge fully formed and able to swim and feed at once, the standard poeciliid pattern. There is no documented evidence for superfetation — the carrying of several broods at different stages of development simultaneously — in this species, so it should not be assumed; some poeciliids show it and others do not, and the literature on Carlhubbsia is too sparse to claim it. As with feeding and courtship, no captive breeding protocol exists for the species, and the figures here come from biological summaries rather than from hobbyist breeding accounts.

In the aquarium

Carlhubbsia kidderi is essentially absent from the aquarium hobby. It is not a trade species, it is rarely if ever offered for sale, and there is no established body of husbandry experience to draw on — a contrast with the guppies, mollies and swordtails that dominate the livebearer hobby. What follows is therefore general guidance inferred from its wild requirements rather than a tested care regime.

Were the species kept, its needs would mirror its native habitat: warm water around 75–86 °F, neutral to mildly alkaline and hard chemistry near pH 7.0–7.8 reflecting the limestone Yucatán waters, with quiet flow, soft substrate and dense planting that suits a small, retiring floodplain fish. As a small, peaceful livebearer it would be a candidate for a quiet species or biotope setup rather than a boisterous community. Because reliable husbandry data are lacking, any keeper should treat care parameters as starting estimates and observe the fish closely.

Conservation

Carlhubbsia kidderi is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List. The assessment (species ID 191723, assessment 2000082) was prepared by María Eugenia Vega-Cendejas, assessed on 26 November 2018 and published in 2019; it reports no known major threats to the species and notes that part of its range lies within the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve, which affords some protection, albeit with lower abundances observed there.

A note of caution on sourcing: the IUCN box auto-pulled into FishBase displays the species as "Data Deficient," but this appears to be a caching error on FishBase's part — the underlying 2018 assessment it links to is in fact Least Concern, as confirmed by the specialist Freshwater Fishes of Mexico account and the IUCN assessment itself (DOI 10.2305/IUCN.UK.2019-2.RLTS.T191723A2000082.en). The Least Concern category is therefore the one carried here. As a narrow-range endemic of the Yucatán and adjacent Guatemala, the species' long-term security nonetheless rests on the continued integrity of its lowland river, marsh and lake habitats, which are vulnerable to the broader pressures of water extraction, pollution and land-use change in the region.
