Carlhubbsia stuarti is a small, barred live-bearing toothcarp from the Atlantic-slope waters of Guatemala, where it lives in richly vegetated, fast-moving streams of the Polochic River and Lake Izabal basins. Silvery-grey with a row of dark vertical bars down the flanks — the markings that earn it the name "barred livebearer" — it is one of just two species in the genus Carlhubbsia, a small Central American poeciliid lineage named for the American ichthyologist Carl Leavitt Hubbs. Little kept and little studied compared with the guppies and mollies of the same family, it remains chiefly a fish of the field collection and the specialist livebearer hobbyist.

Taxonomy & naming

Carlhubbsia stuarti was described by Donn Eric Rosen and Reeve Maclaren Bailey in 1959, in their revision of the poeciliid livebearers of Middle America. The genus Carlhubbsia was erected at the same time to hold this fish and its sole congener, Carlhubbsia kidderi from the Yucatán region; the two form a small, well-circumscribed genus within the family Poeciliidae, the New World livebearers. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats Carlhubbsia stuarti Rosen & Bailey, 1959 as the valid name, and FishBase places the species in the subfamily Poeciliinae of order Cyprinodontiformes.

The genus name honours Carl Leavitt Hubbs (1894–1979), the prolific American ichthyologist whose work on North and Central American fishes — and on poeciliids in particular — shaped the field for much of the twentieth century. The species epithet stuarti commemorates Laurence Cooper Stuart (1907–1983), a University of Michigan herpetologist who carried out extensive faunal work in Guatemala; naming the fish after a herpetologist reflects the collaborative field expeditions through which much of the Guatemalan vertebrate fauna was documented. The standard modern checklist treatment of the family is Lucinda's 2003 Poeciliidae account in the Check List of the Freshwater Fishes of South and Central America.

As a small genus of limited range and modest hobby presence, Carlhubbsia has attracted comparatively little revisionary attention since its erection, and the original 1959 placement has proven stable. Data on the species beyond its formal description, distribution and basic reproductive biology are sparse.

Morphology

Carlhubbsia stuarti is a small fish. FishBase records a maximum of about 2 in standard length for males (and unsexed specimens), with females reaching roughly 2 in; hobby observers report broadly similar figures, with males to about 2 in and females to around 2 in total length, the slight discrepancies reflecting the difference between standard-length and total-length measurement and the small samples involved. By the standards of the family it is a modest, unshowy livebearer.

The body is silvery-grey and marked with a series of dark vertical bars running down the flanks — a tiger-stripe patterning that gives the species its common name, the barred livebearer. This barring is the most distinctive external feature and the readiest field character separating it from plainer poeciliids of the same waters. As in other poeciliids the sexes differ: males are slimmer and carry the gonopodium, while females are deeper-bodied, particularly when gravid.

Detailed morphometric and meristic data for the species rest chiefly on the original description and the FishBase summary; finer points of squamation, fin-ray counts and gonopodial structure are best taken from Rosen and Bailey's 1959 revision rather than restated from secondary sources. Data here are sparse, and this account deliberately stops short of specifics it cannot trace.

Habitat

The species is endemic to the Atlantic slope of Guatemala, where it is known from the Polochic River basin and the basin of Lake Izabal, the large lake into which the Polochic drains before its outflow reaches the Caribbean. This is a Central American distribution confined to a single drainage system, and the fish has no natural range beyond it. A reference record exists in the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service species database, but the species is not native to the United States and that entry is taxonomic reference only.

FishBase characterises the species as a freshwater, pelagic, non-migratory fish of tropical waters, inhabiting richly vegetated, fast-moving streams. The combination of current and dense aquatic vegetation suggests a fish of well-oxygenated, structurally complex stream habitat rather than still backwaters. Recorded temperatures fall in the tropical range of roughly 73–81 °F.

Beyond temperature and the general description of vegetated flowing water, published water-chemistry data (pH, hardness) specific to wild Carlhubbsia stuarti populations are sparse, and this profile does not assign precise values it cannot source. Aquarists keeping the fish should reason from its tropical Central American origin and its association with moving, plant-rich water.

Feeding

No detailed dietary study of Carlhubbsia stuarti is readily available, but its trophic level is estimated at about 3.0 (± 0.4), consistent with a small omnivore that takes a mixture of plant and animal matter rather than a strict predator or strict grazer. In richly vegetated streams such a fish would be expected to feed on small aquatic invertebrates, insect larvae, algae and associated detritus, and items drifting in the current — the generalist micro-omnivore strategy typical of small poeciliids.

In captivity the species should be undemanding in the manner of its relatives, accepting good-quality flake and micro-pellets alongside small live and frozen foods such as Daphnia, brine shrimp and finely chopped bloodworm, with a share of algal or vegetable matter to round out the diet. Frequent small feedings suit a small, near-constant grazer better than infrequent large meals.

Because direct observations of this particular species' feeding are thin, the husbandry guidance above is reasoned from family-level biology and the estimated trophic level rather than from a study of wild gut contents.

Mating

Like all poeciliids, Carlhubbsia stuarti reproduces by internal fertilisation. The male carries a gonopodium — a slender intromittent organ formed from modified rays of the anal fin — which is used to transfer sperm to the female; this structure is the defining anatomical hallmark of the live-bearing poeciliids and the basis on which the sexes are most reliably told apart in mature fish. Fertilisation is therefore internal, and there is no external spawning of eggs.

As in related livebearers, females are able to store viable sperm internally, so a single mating can fertilise more than one successive brood without further contact with a male. Detailed observations of courtship behaviour specific to Carlhubbsia stuarti — display, male tactics, female choice — are not well documented in the accessible literature, and this account does not import the specifics of better-studied species such as the guppy onto it.

What can be stated with confidence is the reproductive mode and its anatomical basis: internal fertilisation via the gonopodium, viviparity, and the capacity for sperm storage that characterises the family. The finer ethological detail remains data-sparse for this species.

Breeding

Carlhubbsia stuarti is viviparous: the female carries the developing young internally and gives birth to free-swimming fry rather than laying eggs. FishBase records a gestation of roughly 28 days, after which the female produces a brood of about 10–30 young, rarely as many as 50. Sexual maturity is reached early, at around three to four months of age, and the species is rated as having high resilience with a population doubling time of under fifteen months — the rapid turnover typical of small, fecund livebearers.

The newborn fry are fully formed miniature fish capable of swimming and feeding from birth. As with poeciliids generally, no parental care follows birth, and adults — including the mother — may predate the fry; a breeder would accordingly rely on dense planting, floating cover, or separation to raise good numbers. The fry should grow on finely powdered foods and newly hatched brine shrimp in the usual manner of the family.

There is no evidence in the accessible sources that Carlhubbsia stuarti practises superfetation (the simultaneous carrying of broods at different developmental stages), a trait present in some but by no means all poeciliids; this profile therefore makes no such claim. In the aquarium

Carlhubbsia stuarti is a specialist's fish rather than a shop staple — it is kept mainly by dedicated livebearer enthusiasts and rarely appears in the general trade. Those who do keep it describe a small, peaceable barred livebearer that, like its relatives, breeds readily once settled. Its association in the wild with fast-moving, richly vegetated streams suggests it is best served by clean, well-oxygenated water with some flow and plenty of planting for cover and grazing.

A tropical temperature in the region of 73–81 °F matches its native range. Because firm captive water-chemistry data for the species are limited, an aquarist is on safest ground keeping it in stable, clean conditions and reasoning from its Central American stream origin rather than chasing precise numbers the literature does not provide. As a small, prolific livebearer it will reproduce in a suitable tank, and the same fry-predation caution that applies across the family applies here.

FishBase rates the species as harmless, and it carries no special handling concerns. Its main husbandry challenge is simply availability: this is an uncommon fish, and sourcing healthy stock from livebearer specialists matters more than any exotic care requirement.

Conservation

Carlhubbsia stuarti is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List (assessment dated 12 August 2019; Red List version 2025-2). Despite a naturally restricted range confined to the Polochic and Lake Izabal basins of Guatemala, the species is not currently considered threatened at the species level, and its high reproductive resilience and short population doubling time work in its favour.

The species is listed as Not Evaluated under both CITES and the Convention on Migratory Species, reflecting that it is not subject to international trade controls or migratory-species agreements. Its low fishing vulnerability and absence from significant commercial use mean direct human exploitation is not a meaningful pressure.

That said, a single-basin Central American endemic is inherently more exposed to localised threats — habitat degradation, watershed disturbance and water-quality decline in the Polochic–Izabal system — than a widespread species would be, and the Least Concern listing reflects current status rather than a guarantee against future change. Continued health of the lake and its tributary streams is the practical key to the species' security.
