Characodon audax is a small, endangered splitfin endemic to a cluster of clear spring-fed creeks and lagoons in the upper Río La Sauceda, a headwater of the Río Mezquital system in Durango, Mexico. One of only a few surviving members of the relict goodeid genus Characodon, the "bold characodon" is a matrotrophic livebearer — its embryos are nourished inside the mother through ribbon-like trophotaeniae rather than a simple yolk — and its dominant, salmon-flushed males are a prized rarity among livebearer specialists. Restricted to a handful of springs above the Saltito Falls, with several of its subpopulations already extinct, it is a textbook case of a Mexican highland fish clinging to fragments of a shrinking aquatic landscape.

Taxonomy & naming

Characodon audax was described by Robert Rush Miller and his colleague in 1986, distinguished from the long-known Characodon lateralis on the basis of meristic and coloration differences among the surviving Durango populations. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats Characodon audax Smith & Miller, 1986 as a valid name, placing it in the genus Characodon within the family Goodeidae — the splitfins or goodeids, a group of viviparous toothcarps largely restricted to the highlands of central and northern Mexico. The genus name Characodon, coined by Günther in 1866, joins the Greek charax (a pointed stake) and odous (tooth), "a tooth like a pointed stake," for the conical dentition; the epithet audax is Latin for "bold" or "daring," the source of the English name bold characodon.

The validity of audax as a species separate from C. lateralis remains debated. The Goodeid Working Group, for example, treats audax informally under C. lateralis, regarding it as a likely synonym based on a reconstruction of Berthold Seemann's 1850 collecting route, while still retaining "Bold Characodon" as a recognizable form. FishBase and the IUCN, by contrast, continue to list Characodon audax as a distinct species. The genus is a relict: only Characodon lateralis and C. audax survive, the third historically recognized member, Characodon garmani of Parras, having gone extinct in the early twentieth century. Until the Catalog of Fishes or a comprehensive revision resolves the matter, this atlas follows the valid name as listed.

Morphology

Characodon audax is a small splitfin, reaching a maximum standard length of roughly 2 in (about 2 in), with FishBase citing a maximum of around 1.5 in SL; males run smaller than females, as is typical of goodeids. The body is moderately deep and laterally compressed, the head small, and the mouth terminal with the pointed, stake-like teeth that give the genus its name. As in all goodeids, the anal fin of the male is not modified into a tubular gonopodium but instead bears a short notched section at its front (the spermatopodium or andropodium), the diagnostic "split fin" of the family.

Coloration is the species' most striking feature and the basis on which it was separated from C. lateralis. Ground color ranges from olivaceous-grey to light brown. Females are plainer and carry a series of dark blotches or a broken stripe along the flank. Dominant males are far more dramatic: in the well-documented El Toboso form they become silvery-grey with shiny, reflective lateral scales and blackened unpaired fins, the belly and lower body flushing salmon-red to yellow when the male is in condition and fed a carotene-rich diet. This intensity is socially and nutritionally dependent — subordinate or poorly fed males remain dull — which makes the full "bold" coloration something seen mainly in well-kept aquarium stock and dominant wild fish.

Habitat

Characodon audax is endemic to Durango, Mexico, confined to springs and creeks along the Río La Sauceda — a headwater of the Río Mezquital / Río El Tunal drainage — above the Saltito Falls (Cascada El Saltito), roughly 6 mi north-northwest of Nombre de Dios. Documented localities span from Arroyo Los Mimbres near Los Pinos in the north to Arroyo La Estancia near Pino Suárez in the south, and include Laguna Seca, the springs (manantiales) near El Toboso, El Garabato, Abraham González and Las Moras, and springs west of the Río Sauceda toward the Presa Peña del Águila. The species occupies clear, spring-fed lagoons and creeks over mud and sand bottoms, vegetated with loose stands of Potamogeton and fringed by riparian grasses and reeds; some sites range from clear to a mud-dark brown, and others show moderate to swift current over gravel, rock, roots and leaf litter.

These are cool, stable spring waters: temperatures in the lagoons sit around 66 °F, somewhat cooler than the immediate spring outflow, reflecting the moderate elevation of the Durango highlands. The habitat is naturally fragmented into discrete spring systems, and the species is correspondingly divided into several subpopulations or evolutionarily significant units — seven are recognized — which underpins both its taxonomic interest and its vulnerability. The Victoria de Durango subpopulation is regarded as extinct, and the fish has been extirpated from Arroyo Los Mimbres, Cerro Gordo, San Vicente de los Chupaderos and the springs around the city of Victoria de Durango.

Feeding

Characodon audax is an omnivore with a low trophic level — FishBase places it at roughly 2.2, near the bottom of the scale — consistent with a diet built around algae, detritus and small invertebrates rather than active piscivory. Direct evidence of its feeding comes from a radiograph of preserved specimens by Michael Tobler, which revealed small snail shells in the viscera, confirming that the fish takes aquatic micro-fauna such as gastropods alongside plant and detrital material. In its clear, vegetated spring habitats it grazes over mud, sand and Potamogeton, picking at the invertebrate and algal film these substrates support.

In the aquarium the species is undemanding at the table and accepts a wide range of foods, doing best on a varied diet that combines a quality dry food with regular small live and frozen items — Daphnia, brine shrimp, cyclops and similar — and a vegetable or algal component. As with many goodeids, carotenoid-rich foods are not merely nutritional but cosmetic: dominant males develop their full salmon-to-red ventral flush most strongly when well fed on color-enhancing fare, so a thoughtful diet directly improves the display for which the bold characodon is kept.

Mating

Like all goodeids, Characodon audax practices internal fertilization, but it does so without the tubular gonopodium of the poeciliid livebearers (guppies, mollies and their kin). Instead the male's anal fin is split at the front into a short, notched spermatopodium — the structure that names the "splitfins" — which is used to transfer sperm to the female. There is no long, mobile intromittent organ and no prolonged sperm storage of the poeciliid type; mating in goodeids is a more direct, contact-based affair tied closely to each reproductive cycle.

Male Characodon are notably display-oriented and can be aggressive among themselves, with social rank governing both color and breeding access. A dominant male, in full silvery-and-salmon condition with blackened fins, courts females actively, and the species' bold coloration is best understood as a sexually selected signal: males that achieve dominance and condition advertise it, while subordinates remain drab. In a mixed group this produces a shifting hierarchy in which one or a few males hold center stage, a dynamic that aquarists exploit by keeping the fish in colony groups where natural competition brings the best males into peak color.

Breeding

Characodon audax is a viviparous, matrotrophic livebearer. Unlike poeciliids, whose eggs are essentially provisioned with yolk before fertilization (lecithotrophy), goodeids nourish their developing embryos directly inside the ovary through trophotaeniae — ribbon- or rosette-like outgrowths from the embryo's vent that absorb maternal nutrients, functioning much like a placental connection. The young are therefore born comparatively large and well developed after a gestation on the order of several weeks, and bear the distinctive scar or remnant where the trophotaeniae detached at birth. There is no superfetation of the poeciliid kind: a female carries a single developing brood at a time rather than overlapping clutches.

Broods are small by livebearer standards — a few to a couple of dozen well-formed fry — reflecting the heavy maternal investment in each embryo. Newborn fry are immediately free-swimming and large enough to take newly hatched brine shrimp and finely powdered foods at once. Adults will predate fry, but in a well-structured tank with dense planting, rockwork and ample hiding cover the young are largely ignored, especially where multiple juvenile size-classes and good feeding reduce cannibalistic pressure. Because the wild populations are so reduced, captive breeding within specialist networks such as the Goodeid Working Group is a meaningful part of the species' conservation, and maintaining genetically distinct subpopulation lines is an explicit goal of those programs.

In the aquarium

Characodon audax is a fish for the dedicated livebearer or goodeid keeper rather than the general community aquarist, valued for its rarity and for the intense color of dominant males. A spacious, low and wide aquarium suits it best: a footprint-oriented tank of at least 40 US gal, with a relatively modest water height (around 10 in is sufficient), structured with rocks, vegetation, roots and wood concentrated in the corners and along the back to create territories and refuges. Cooler, well-oxygenated, clean water reflecting its spring origins — broadly in the high teens to low-to-mid 20s Celsius — keeps the fish in best condition; like many highland goodeids it dislikes prolonged warmth.

The species is best maintained as a colony, which both displays its social color dynamics and supports flock or group breeding; experienced keepers establish such groups by introducing batches of 0.5–1 in sub-adults so that hierarchies form naturally as the fish mature. Goodeids can be nippy and boisterous among themselves and toward tankmates, so companions should be chosen carefully and the group given room to disperse aggression. Given its endangered status and the conservation value of pure subpopulation lines, the most important husbandry principle is provenance: keep documented stock, avoid hybridizing distinct forms or with C. lateralis, and treat the fish as a living part of an ex situ conservation effort.

Conservation

Characodon audax is assessed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List, under criteria B1ab(i,ii,iii,iv)+2ab(i,ii,iii,iv), with the assessment dated 18 April 2018 (species page 4529/3000317). The listing reflects its tiny, severely fragmented range in the upper Río La Sauceda and a continuing decline in the extent and quality of its spring habitats. A subsequent regional review of Mexican goodeids (Lyons et al., 2019) judged the situation more dire still, classifying C. audax as Critically Endangered and declining — a divergence worth noting given how quickly the status of these micro-endemic spring fishes can change.

The threats are those that press on all the goodeids of the Mexican highlands: spring and creek desiccation from groundwater extraction and drought, water pollution and habitat modification, and the spread of introduced fishes. Several of the species' subpopulations have already been lost — the Victoria de Durango unit is considered extinct, and the fish is extirpated from Arroyo Los Mimbres, Cerro Gordo, San Vicente de los Chupaderos and springs around Victoria de Durango — leaving the survivors confined to an ever-smaller set of springs above the Saltito Falls. Against this, the species has a foothold in aquarium conservation: it persists in specialist collections and the captive lines maintained by groups such as the Goodeid Working Group, where the priority is to keep the distinct subpopulations separate and genetically intact as insurance against further losses in the wild.
